Wonderful hotel situated on the Grand Canal. We visited for four nights in late September and early October. Small, with nice rooms and very personalized service. Breakfast was very good and served in a nice space. We very much enjoyed drinks served at tables in the garden overlooking the very busy Grand Canal. Service was excellent. The front desk helped... We have stayed at Ca Nigra before as we love sitting in the garden, fascinated by all the different boats on the Grand Canal; vaporetto, taxis, gondolas, police, ambulance, builders, bin men, beer men, rubbish collection, even a hearse on the way to the cemetery. To us, this is what Venice is all about. The hotel is very quiet and... More

This is a very nice hotel, off the beaten track a bit, but still on the Grand Canal. There are beautiful gardens, and the staff is very helpful and accommodating. The breakfast is wonderful...BUT, do not ever get a single room here. I had a room with a nice view, but the size of a prison cell! When I used... More

We stayed at the Ca´ Nigra for a night before a cruise. It is easy to reach from the train station and from Piazzale Roma where the airport express bus stops. Once you enter the grounds through a small doorway you enter an oasis of peace, quiet and romantic luxury. The hotel is a perfect mix of old venetian heritage... More

The Hotel looks nice and the staff is welcomed. The room was alright, just need to be cleaned properly. However, arriving in a room with mosquitos, and not being able to control the air conditioning, calling the reception to fix it, and they aren't able to manage and tell you "sorry but if you want you can open the window"...... Ca' Nigra, is located at a good location, near the train station, so very easy when you have a lot of luggage. So also ideal for getting on one of the many "bus boats". Rooms are old, but what do you expect in Venice. You have to keep that in mind. The bathroom is ok, beds are a bit hard.... More

We loved it here despite not really enjoying Venice due to the crowds. This hotel is conveniently located next to the train station and away from the hustle and bustle of San Marco. Ca Nigra is on the Grand Canal with a beautiful terrace area. The rooms are spacious. We booked the hotel hoping for a view of the Grand Canal. Our view was of "a canal" but not so grand. The hotel is old with old hotel problems. The staff is OK. Morning breakfast buffet OK. The place was nothing to write... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
