My wife and I stayed here as part of a tour of Florence and Tuscany.
It’s a very large hotel and, during the three nights we were there the throughput of guests arriving/departing was to be seen to be believed, the admin side of things there must be really up to scratch.
We has a room on the third floor, our room sharing the single lift/elevator shaft, which, to be very honest didn’t trouble us as we were quickly used to the ‘hum’ of the lift going up and down, what did trouble us was the voices of those entering and leaving the lift. We found the room adequate for our needs, lovely large comfy bed and, despite the noise by the lift, and (not the fault of the hotel) emergency vehicles with their sirens on the main road outside. Really clean place.
Very convenient for visiting the centre of Florence - we walked it three times.
We found breakfast, for Italy (Italians don’t do breakfast) quite good, plenty of choice, including bacon, egg, toast, cereals, fruit, croissants.
What let the place down was the service at the evening meal, (not included in the price) the waitresses didn’t seem to bother, rather lethargic, after ordering, in how it was presented and not producing drinks ordered until challenged (really quiet in the dining room for custom) and we were somewhat surprised to see burgers and fries passing by into the bar area, so the next night, bar area it was for a cheaper, to us, excellent plateful of food, the girls there were working non stop and providing an excellent service.
A shame they don’t advertise the meals in the rooms so an informed choice could be made in advance.
On leaving there was some kind of incident recovering our cases from storage due the the porters going off shift, but it was all sorted by other staff.
I’m not saying we wouldn’t go again, if wanting to go the Florence independently.

My wife and I stay there every year as it hosts the Pycon Italia conference at which we, as Python experts, usually present (and are friends with most organizers and attendees). It's become my favorite spot to stay in Florence because it's handy to the touristy part yet not smack into it -- and many excellent, keenly-priced eateries are very close to the hotel... of course, good service and decent prices matter, too!

Dear Guest, many thanks for posting the review! Happy to read that you had the opportunity to visit us during the Pycon events and you enjoyed the hotel as well as the location. The Grand Hotel Mediterraneo is close to the historical center and outside the limited traffic zone, the perfect combination to visit Florence’s major attraction avoiding the hustle and bustle of the city center. It’s very rewarding to read that the quality of the service provided turned you into a regular visitor. Thanks again for sharing, we’re looking forward to welcoming you back again soon. Best regards, Paola M. Brand & Communication Manager

After arriving shortly before 3 am we wanted to make ourselves a cup of tea. Unfortunately the kettle didn’t work so I called reception. They said there was no one available until after 6pm to look at it. We then discovered that the TV didn’t work either. Having booked a superior room I didn’t think we were in the correct room and on their website it said that we should have bathrobes and slippers which we didn’t. I went to reception and explained the situation - you would have thought I was asking them to donate a kidney instead of providing a service which we had paid for. They told me the website was wrong and they didn’t supply robes and slippers. I asked if it was possible to get a kettle from another room and the receptionist then took me to 2 other rooms. In both of them I asked her to check if the kettles worked before taking them and neither of them did. The next day our room hadn’t been serviced properly and the cups had not been replaced or the tea and coffee replenished. At breakfast for the 3 days we were there the selection was poor and the scrambled eggs were cold each day. I am not sure how they managed to get 4 stars.

Grand Hotel Mediterraneo

While in Florence, Italy we stayed 2 nights in the Gand Hotel Mediterraneo. Very nicely up graded cosmopolitan style interior as opposed to its 1500 style exterior architectural design. Or room was spacious with twin beds pushed together to make a double. There was desk, bed with a fold out couch, TV and lots of outlets. How ever you will need a converter for 120 volt appliances.

the staff was excellent. There are 2 main eating areas (a bar with a food menu & a dining room) both have a full bar.

The hotel is in walking distance to most of the museums and Churches of historic value. There are a number of restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel as well.

We were here as part of a tour and were looking forward to a couple of days over the New Year period.
New Year's Eve dinner was absolutely horrible. Seven courses which were inedible. No Italian EVER serves polenta, risotto and pasta in the same meal. The famous Florentine steak ended up being two cold slices of meat with a side serve of hot potatoes. The hot potatoes were given to a friend who is vegetarian and was assured that she would be catered for, but wasn't. I left the table at that point with still two courses to go. We had been seated at 7pm and it was now 11pm. I was too tired to go out and enjoy the concerts which had started an hour before.
I felt very sorry for families that had booked with their children. At 75 euros a head they would have been hungry, tired and extremely disgusted.
The head waiter did a good interpretation of an air traffic controller straight after a strike. How hard can it be to assign one waiter to a table, to ensure that he or she knows who has received their food, who has special dietary needs and what cutlery, water or bread needs to be replaced? No, there were waiters running all over the place, missing customers, getting meals wrong and literally slamming dishes down in front of people.
As for the rooms, they were adequate. Clean but nothing luxurious.
The hotel is along the river. Pretty if you get a front room, but not in anyway convenient to central Florence or to any public transport.
It was a miserable stay and we will not be returning.

Dear Guest, thanks for sharing your review although we're disappointed that your time with us was less than ideal. Please be informed that the menu of the dinner was clearly shown on our sites and it didn’t include the Florentine T Bone steak. The second course was a Great Piece of Beed with Cream “Cannellini”Beans and roasted potatoes. The menu included several courses, as common in Italy, during special events such as in the New Year’s Eve, I am sorry to learn that you didn’t enjoy the selection of courses. In reference to the timing, we opened the restaurants rooms at 8.15 pm and we served the dinner starting from 8.30 pm. Our staff worked very hard to check and provide an efficient service when all the restaurants room were completely full. As far as the rooms is concerned, keep in mind that also this information is clearly written on our sites so we encourage our guests to check it in advance, just to ensure that the hotel fits personal need and expectations. The hotel has 327 rooms, with different room types which vary in terms of comfort, space, design, view and price, from the classic room to the suite. We strive to provide comfortable and clean room, therefore we’re happy to read that you found the room clean! The location is usually highly appreciated by our guests who search for a hotel set outside the hustle and bustle of the city center, in a quieter neighborhood. The center is very easy to reach, by foot and also by the public transport. We're sorry to read that you didn't enjoy the stay and that the hotel didn't meet your expectations. Best regards, Paola M.

I was accommodated 2 weeks ago in this hotel. In the day of departure, my roommate forgot a bag with some personal stuff under the chair in the room.
In the evening, we called the reception and we were told to call the next morning after 9 o'clock, because we need to talk to the cleaning department. We respect the advice and make the call, and we were assured that they will check and come back to us, which didn't happened!
Same day, in the afternoon, after no news from the hotel representative, we asked our Italian guide to give them a call and explained them that we would like to talk with the Hotel Manager regarding this issue and he was promised to come back to us with an answer, after checking. My roommate was called and told that they checked and nothing was found and to write a mail to the Cleaning Department Manager for double-checking! And, if she find the bag in some other place, to tell them! :(
The other day, they responded to her mail that after double-checking nothing was found!
It's not a matter of the value of the stuff from the bag (denim jacket, cosmetics, souvenirs), but a principles one! Is normal when you find something in a room to go to the reception and announce, because there is the place where you ask about the lost items.
As a conclusion: use the safe in the room for values and take care/double or triple check not to forget something in the room, otherwise you'll not get it back from the cleaning ladies!

Stayed here as part of small tour group, only for one night. Room and bathroom were clean, appreciated having a bathtub to shower in. Was on top floor at the far end of the hotel, as we were three people in one room -- had to lug our suitcases up a dozen steps BUT there was a wonderful view of Firenze's awesome Duomo (cathedral) from our room window. There's a bar downstairs; we'd bought a bottle of wine while coming home from a visit to the Santa Croce church and the bartender gladly opened our bottle for us; we left a nice tip. Breakfast was very good, lots of options, had a pancake-maker, great for the kids. Comfortable stay.

The hotel was excellent. The rooms were quite small. The breakfast was excellent and the location was a little bit out of the centre but still ok to walk to, about 20 mins to the main attractions. Staff were excellent. Car parking is underneath but can be accessed 24/7 if required.

The bathroom was so small you can barely maneuver around in there. There are different rooms with different layouts but the consensus from others, is that the bathrooms were VERY small. We stayed at 5 different hotels during our tour of Italy and this hotel had the smallest bathroom of them all. The bathroom was 4’x6’, when you sat on the toilet your knees were touching the bidet. There was no outlet to use a curling or flat iron, you had to use it by the tv. The bed was fine, service was fine, breakfast had a nice variety. All coffee was not what we’re use to in the states. Very strong and very hot. I would prefer not to stay there again.

We only stayed here as we were part of a touring group.
The hotel was clean, the rooms small and the coffee and tea had to be drunk out of cardboard cups - definitely not for us. We even asked for china cups but they just brought more cardboard ones….
Breakfast (as we part of a small group) was in a separate room, in the basement and was dreadful. One coffee machine for potentially 50 people, no fresh fruit, erratic supplies of cereals and granola, white,, thin sliced mass produced bread, rubbery scrambled egg. The list goes on. The busy two members of staff were pleasant.
This hotel is too far out of Florence central for walking to, especially after a days walking elsewhere. Taxis are expensive.
There is a wide bank down at the riverside and there is ‘entertainment’ there some evenings.
Within a good paced 10 minute walk away from the river there are a number of varying quality, restaurants.
This is a large hotel, that could do so much better.
