One of the things I enjoy most about Relais Cavalcaniti is that I can pretend I actually live in Florence, my favorite city in Europe. I like that I get my own keys to the building (which also houses private residences), the Relais Cavalcanti apartment, and my own room. I like that I have access to the kitchen and can help myself to pastries, cookies, and snacks at any time of day or night. It is just like I am at home -- and not just because I've stayed at Relais Cavalcanti several times since 2003! I keep returning to Relais Cavalcanti because it is perfect for independent travelers like me who appreciate being in the heart of Florence. Superior rooms, like the Botticelli and Pontormo rooms (my favorites), overlook the bustling Mercato del Porcellino and provide a view of the Palazzo Vecchio tower. Location-wise, the relais is a block-and-a-half from the Piazza della Republica and is a short walk from the Piazza della Signoria, Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio and high-end shopping on Via de' Tornabuoni. And, if you don't yet know your way around this great city, guests are provided with a handy tourist map with helpful recommendations for dining, sightseeing, and supermarket locations highlighted. But, location isn't everything. I also return because of the rooms and the service. Rooms and linens are spotlessly clean and housekeeping refreshes the room daily. Proprietor-sisters Anna and Francesca ensure everything is running smoothly at the relais to make your stay wonderful and stress-free. Office hours are limited (they do not live on-site), so just be sure to seek them out in the morning should you need to order a taxi for your departure or to help with a restaurant reservation. For our own experience, we had a very early flight out of Florence, so when Francesca ordered our taxi the day before, she gave us advice about the fixed rate, luggage fee, and what to do if the driver demanded more money. It was very helpful, though we thankfully did not need to submit a complaint about the taxi. What is new since my last stay is that breakfast is now included! A delightful lady begins setting out a continental breakfast at 8 a.m. Hard boiled eggs, pastries, juice, and meats and cheeses are now available until 11 a.m. And this is in addition to the cookies, cakes, coffee, and tea that are available at any time. Like the previous reviewer noted, I also have no need to look elsewhere for lodging in Florence. If anything, I would like to move in permanently! TIP: Relais Cavalcanti is not "fancy." If you are looking for a Four Seasons-type luxury experience where someone in a uniform will greet you at the door, hold your hand, and attempt to satisfy your every whim, this is not the place for you. If you want privacy, quiet, and like to plan, explore and travel on your own, Relais Cavalcanti is the ticket!…
