I thoroughly enjoyed my 3-night stay in Volkshaus Basel in October 2024.

The hotel is centrally located and easily accessible by public transport. It’s just a few steps away from Claraplatz and very close to Mittlere Brucke. The bus stop for the bus to the Vitra Design Museum (a must for art and design enthusiasts) is just across the street. There’re supermarkets and many shops in the lively neighbourhood.

Upon my arrival at the hotel around 12:30, I was delighted to be told that my room (Room 103) was ready. The signature design room was very spacious with a contemporary design, modern facilities and the original floor plan by the world famous Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron who designed the hotel. There’re large windows and a lot of natural light. Although it’s on the first floor and facing the street, there’s only little noise thanks to good sound proofing measures.

Breakfast was included in the room rate and served in the bar during the week and in the brasserie on weekends. There’s a large selection of food. The staff will cook you eggs upon request.

All the staff were professional, courteous and helpful.

I made my booking well in advance and enjoyed a very good price. So, it’s advisable to reserve early.

I highly recommend Volkshaus Basel and will definitely choose to stay there again if I visit the city in the future.

We had a wonderful overnight stay. Rooms were spacious and spotless, the bed and pillows were very comfortable and the staff was amazing. Great location especially for the Christmas Market that was very walkable. Tram Transportation convenient to and from Train station. Highly recommend!

We stayed at the Hotel Volkshaus for 2 nights as a couple in mid-February 2024 and we really enjoyed it there: We really appreciated the lovely welcome and the attentive and friendly staff in all areas. The room in the historic building was very skilfully furnished by the architect duo Herzog & de Meuron: Simply for those who like cool design and have plenty of space. The breakfast buffet is not overloaded, but finely selected (e.g. cheese). One evening we ate in the brasserie: We really enjoyed the food (starter salmon tartare, main course cooked wild boar with a greatly reduced sauce). The menu has something for everyone...

Mixed experience unfortunately…
Undeniably a beautiful establishment well located a few steps from the banks of the Rhine, the old town and the museums. Design lovers will be delighted by this rigorous style with art deco and modernist accents. Dark woods, mosaics and terrazzo, shades of black, brown and pine green. Pretty courtyard and generous plants. Friendly restaurant and quality breakfast as well. Choose without hesitation... if you want to take pretty photos...
On the other hand, think twice if you also want to sleep! Unfortunately we had a room facing the street and on the 1st floor and we didn't sleep a wink all night. Exterior blinds and curtains that let light through, overheated room and above all noise all night! Terrace below, terrace in front, traffic... we thought we had left a window open but no! The soundproofing promised on the room presentation sheet is an illusion. Unless that is the local term for the “earplugs” generously provided on the windowsill! We should have been wary of this welcoming gift. The hours are long in this case but fortunately as the church opposite rings every quarter of an hour you can easily count them! Other details that underline the limits of the design: safe 30 cm from the ground and zero storage. Bring elegant luggage because you will only see them in your designer room. In summary, if you want to nourish your Instagram account, the place to be. If you want to have a good night's sleep... think carefully. Damage.

We spent two nights here. The building has been beautifully renovated and is right by Claraplatz, which is in the middle of the city. All the staff are super nice and accommodating! Since there is no minibar in the room, there is a station in the hallway with water etc. and on Friday evening at around 6:30 p.m. the room service came with a cart full of drinks. We had two gin and tonics, which came with a few nibbles. Great idea! Breakfast is small but nice! Now for the slightly more negative points: we were given a room facing the street, and since the windows are not double-glazed, it was very noisy. And since it is a large square, it was never quiet at night. The room looks nice but I think it is too little for the price. If you are already paying around 300 per night, I would have expected a bit more...
I would say it was a nice stay but the price is too expensive! We wouldn't come back like that...

A hotel of industrial aesthetics, very comfortable and with details that help the well-being of guests. Coffee, tea and fruit on each floor and a comfortable and non-invasive night entrance.

Breakfast is a little uncomfortable in the hotel cafeteria, it is not an exclusive area to customers which makes sharing with people on the street the service is sometimes slow, but its quality is very good.

It is not close to the city center but very well connected.

Hall rather sad and cold. The welcome is quite expeditious. The room is minimalist we know by choosing it we like it but it is not practical. Few storage even for us who travel very light, water and hot drinks are to look for in this long corridor, and finally no e-readers: only 2 strong lights near the bed and 1 pillow each which therefore hardly invites to evening reading.
Also a side without a big curtain that suggests with the opposite that we can see light on. Practicality has not been well studied in this room, to make you feel good. And we like minimalism but it was really "cold".

The +: we rather enjoyed the restaurant of the hotel although quite expensive, the location is nice, the Christmas tree in the courtyard gave warmth to all this.

When can I return?!!! Loved this place so much. Polished yet warm staff who are more than happy to direct you to the many attractions in Basel. Rooms are clean and beautifully designed. Beds are very comfortable with classic simple duvet. Well equipped hospitality stations on each floor feature great coffee, apples and carafes of water. Breakfast buffet is continental but absolutely mouth watering with loads of variety. Artists and business professionals will all enjoy their stay.

The hotel is kitted out by local architects Herzog and de Meuron and is a delight, from beach hut style showers and bathroom fittings (think 20s Babylon Berlin in top wood and chic floors) to thoughtfully designed sinks which are effortlessly environmentally friendly. Comfortable and spacious, the rooms are easy for families (we had two connecting rooms).

Tea and coffee, apples and chocolate on each floor, this is an ideal city stay for couples or families who need a central base to explore.
