At the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, guests have called out the elegance and charm that fuse the old-world with modern sophistication, creating an inviting atmosphere. The hotel's prime location and stunning views are often highlighted, as is the exemplary cleanliness that guests consistently praise. While some travelers find the costs steep, including meal prices, many feel that the high level of service and range of amenities, such as complimentary minibar treats and efficient service, justify the expense. Rooms are admired for their cleanliness and views, despite some noting their size and occasional dated aspects.

When you travel at a high level you always expect the best but sometimes you only find it in part but here the experience was perfect in terms of service, attention to the customer, courtesy of the staff, class and elegance.
It fully belongs to "The Leading Hotels of the World" which for us are synonymous, in general, with luxurious hotels where you feel good and come back.
The hotel is located in the heart of beautiful Basel, a city of art and culture; upon our arrival the car is promptly taken care of for parking, check-in is quick and pleasantly relaxed but impeccable, with immediate assignment of a splendid Junior Suite with balcony overlooking the Rhine (the upgrade is very welcome) furnished in harmony with the neoclassical style of the hotel but with modern amenities (Bang & Olufsen TV, lights, etc.) accompanied by a "gastronomic" gift for LHW members (typical biscuits and fresh fruit).
Luggage delivered to your room immediately, how nice not to have to wait for it!
Returning from visiting the city we enjoyed the large balcony, the front view of the Rhine and the city bridges is beautiful both during the day and in the evening, and it was pleasant to sit outside for a glass of wine.
The Concierge is excellent, full of useful advice on the city and if you feel like taking a swim in the river (like the inhabitants of the city do) he will provide you with a waterproof bag to store your objects branded "Les Trois Rois" and off you go, ready to dive in. in water!
The breakfast served in the room with large windows overlooking the river is also excellent, consisting of an excellent buffet (the cheeses worthy of note, carefully chosen) and a menu of hot dishes cooked on the spot included; very friendly staff and quick service.
Turn down with water and a little different thought every evening.
Very pleasant experience even at check-out, where sometimes hotels tend to get a little lost.
It is the address not to be missed in Basel.

RE: January 2024 travels

Everything here is top-notch. Their 3-star Michelin restaurant on-site ran a special from WED-FRI. My stay was set for SUN, and the concierge was kind enough to get me in for a Table for One for Friday Lunch. I've never dined at a 3-star Michelin restaurant, and completely WoW'd by the whole experience. I recommend anyone visiting Basel, Switzerland to visit the quaint hotel just to check the florals in the main lobby, or even just to look out from the balcony (past the tea room) onto the waterfront views.

I have to say, when I checked into the hotel room, I was pretty surprised they upgraded my room. The closet reminded me so much of that movie; The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. That impressed me. Plus, the complimentary goodies include soda, Gummy Bears, and such. And, so you know, the windows for both the room and bathroom have an electrical awning which is controlled from the inside of the room. Just in case you need to shower, and wonder how to close up the windows from anyone taking a peek! The sound system in their bathroom is phenomenal. While watching Marry Poppins on their Bangs & Olufsen TV, I was even able to sing-a-long in the bathroom.

The pretty hotel chandelier at Les Trois Rois hotel, reminded me so much of the custom chandelier hanging inside the MC Escher museum in The Netherlands. Between the two restaurants on site, I highly, highly recommend trying the food at their 3-star Michelin restaurant named Cheval Blanc. I've just added photos of the food for now. Will add on more photos later in the day, of the room I was upgraded into and the hotel's string of chandeliers.

Dear SanDiego_SHEL Thank you so much for sharing your detailed and heartfelt review of your stay at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois. We are absolutely delighted to hear that your experience with us was so memorable and that every aspect—from your dining experience at Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl to the thoughtful touches in your room—left such a positive impression. It’s wonderful to know that our concierge could secure a spot for you at Cheval Blanc and that your first 3-star Michelin experience was truly “WoW-worthy.” Chef Peter Knogl and his team will be thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed the culinary journey. Your comparison of the wardrobe to The Chronicles of Narnia and your appreciation of the intricate details, like the sound system and electric awnings, brought such a smile to our faces. It’s these moments of discovery that make every stay unique, and we’re so pleased that you found joy in exploring them. Thank you as well for your kind words about the florals in the lobby, the chandeliers, and our stunning waterfront views. We’re truly fortunate to be able to offer such a special setting in the heart of Basel. Your recommendation to others means the world to us, and we can’t wait to welcome you back for another unforgettable Les Trois Rois experience. Warm regards Stephanie Staubli Quality Manager

All of the staff was very friendly and helpful when I had questions. The room was kept very clean throughout the stay which made relaxing that much more pleasant after a busy day of activities. The location of the hotel is very convenient to a lot of the things I saw in the city, and the view of the city/river was amazing!

My husband and I decided to enjoy the long MLK weekend in Basel, Switzerland. We live in neighboring Germany, and Basel is a city we were curious about. I discovered Les Trois Rois last spring and we finally got the opportunity to book a stay.

I selected a Queen River Room with a terrace. It was pricey, and I completed the booking before I noticed I could have added breakfast. I'm actually glad I didn't include breakfast, though, because Basel has some nice cafes where it is possible to enjoy a relatively cheap breakfast with locals. We did have breakfast at the hotel one morning, and it was very good.

I think if I had to do it over, I would have opted for a King River Room, as the Queen room was a bit cozy. However, we had a great view of the river from our stylish room, and we loved the huge terrace, even though it was cold outside. I got a kick out of the "washlet" type toilet, and it was nice to have a complimentary minibar. I also liked the shower, particularly the pressure, although it didn't seem to drain very fast.

The mattress was a bit too firm for my taste, but that seems to be a problem for me in most hotels these days. I liked that the housekeeping staff left notes when we missed turn down, because we had the do not disturb cord up. That was very considerate.

I was especially impressed by how warm, welcoming, and friendly the staff was. Nothing was too much trouble, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their work. I assume the hotel offers a good working environment, as no one looked stressed.

If we go back to Basel, I would not hesitate to stay at Les Trois Rois again. I will also heartily recommend it to others. And yes, we DID try Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl and that, as well, is entirely worth a visit! Just bring a credit card with a high limit!

When we travel, we always select an historic hotel with lots of local charm and history. This was the basis of our selection of this property for a two night stay prior to a river boat cruise. On that note, this hotel delivers. It's a beautiful property in the city center with gorgeous views of the Rhine. We selected a king balcony room with a view of the river. The flowers in the foyer are spectacular and we really enjoyed the evening that we ate at the Brasserie.

So why 3 stars? We found that the staff seemed stuffy and not empowered to address guest issues. Our issue was with our room rate upon check-in. They claimed we booked for 1 person and not for 2, resulting in an additional 110 SF for a second person in the room per night. We thought we had it resolved only to discover we did not when checking out. The hotel also had an error in our credit card data, which would have made it impossible for us to book the room online, adding to my suspicion that the data error was theirs and not mine. Upon my objection and a call to 'corporate', they offered only a 30 SF reduction per night. I expected them to believe their guest and not insist on any additional charge, particularly since there was no breakfast or other actual expense (washing an extra towel?) to the hotel of a second person in a king room. The issue left me feeling the victim of a 'bait and switch' on the room rate --- which was in excess of 800 SF a night in any case. Had we known this would be their attitude, we would have chosen to have lunch and dinner at another location instead of giving them the additional business.

Sadly, it started our holiday off on the wrong note and instead of remembering the beautiful property, our memory is of their inability to put guests first, particularly when it doesn't create any additional cost on their end. If this hotel wants to be 'young at heart', they're going to need to be less rigid and not make guests feel uncomfortable for pointing out an error in their booking information and then being insistent on charging them for it.

Dear guest Thank you very much for taking the time to share your detailed feedback about your recent stay with us. We are truly grateful for your kind words about our historic property, its central location, and the beautiful views of the Rhine. It's also wonderful to hear that you appreciated the ambiance of our hotel, the stunning flowers in the foyer, and your dining experience at the Brasserie. However, we are deeply sorry to learn that your overall experience was overshadowed by the issues you encountered regarding your room rate. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and frustration caused by the booking discrepancy. We understand how such an issue can negatively impact the enjoyment of your stay, especially at the start of a holiday, and for that, we are truly sorry. We regret that our response did not meet your expectations and that the handling of your situation left you feeling disappointed. Your feedback has been shared with our management team, and we will use it to improve the way we handle similar situations in the future. We strive to ensure that every guest feels welcomed and valued, and it's clear we fell short in this instance. Please know that we take your comments very seriously. We are reviewing our procedures to ensure that issues like these are addressed with greater empathy and flexibility. We are also investigating the cause of the booking and credit card errors you mentioned to prevent them from occurring again. We truly value your feedback and hope that, despite the challenges you faced, you might give us another opportunity to provide you with the exceptional service and experience you rightfully expect. If you do choose to return, we would be more than happy to assist with your reservation personally to ensure a smooth and enjoyable stay. Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience and disappointment caused. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. Warm wishes from Basel Stephanie Staubli Quality Manager

From the time you check in with a hotel towel until you checkout with a gift of special preserves, you will be overwhelmed with the friendly courteous staff. Everyone was always smiling and made you feel special. We had room 303 with a city view and did not have any problems with noise. The elevators were always quick when called. This hotel has got to be the best in Basel with its 101 rooms - in process of expanding.

My husband and I have been travelling for over 30 years and we always choose top hotels as we both love the experience of a great hotel. Our favourites include the New York Plaza. the Ritz London. Burj al Arab Dubai, Kempinski Moscow and Geneva, etc, but never can I say we have had better service or quality of accommodation than this hotel in Basel. Any and all requests were met with a willingness to Please. for example I asked the concierge, Domonkos Kekesi to book me rail tickets to Zurich. He pointed out that I would need a mobile phone by way of security to purchase the tickets. We do not take our mobile phones with us overseas so I said not to worry as I would call into the station and pick up tickets. Domonkos replied No that was an inconvience for me, so he happily purchased the tickets using his own personal credit card, which of course he could verify with his phone. He said the cost would appear on my bill which it did when we checked out. I cannot remember ever having that kind of service from a concierge anywhere. The doormen are always ready with a welcome greeting and they remember your name from day one ( this is not a large hotel….always a blessing). Cold water is offered as you leave the hotel, fresh fruit and nibbles are offered in the room free of charge and the mini bar with beer, wine, coca cola and water and orange juice is also free. The rooms are serviced twice daily and the bed linen is constantly changed and crispy clean. There is a superb restaurant in this amazing hotel which I. think has a very high Michelin rating. Breakfast has a modest offering as hot food is ordered from the waiter and comes out freshly cooked rather than sitting in warming trays for hours. We could not connect to the net….no problem leave our iPad with the concierge and we were online in no time. Tips are not expected and not requested. There is a great bar with balcony overlooking the Rhine, but reservations are recommended as it is a popular destination for the locals.
This hotel has an elegance with a rich history that money cannot buy and the refinement and elegance is obvious in all parts of the hotel. It is an expensive hotel, but we did not mind the extra cost given the fabulous room we had , waterfront on the Rhine ( do try and get a water front room) and number 223 on the second floor. It could be a little noisy during the day sometimes with boats moving around but even though we like to take an afternoon nap, the noise was not a problem. A real honour to be able to stay at this hotel.

"Rich in history, young at heart."

Spring visit to an iconic grand hotel

When you come out of your hotel room in the morning and the chambermaid who comes towards you in the hallway cheerfully asks you if you slept well, you feel comfortable and appreciated. Such natural, unpretentious friendliness from the hotel team is by no means a given, even in luxury hotels. In the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, perhaps the most beautiful grand hotel in Europe, I actually encountered it everywhere in the building.

There were three of us staying for one night at the Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel. Expectations were high, after all, according to Gault Millau, this is the Hotel of the Year 2020. The reception was terrific! You felt welcome in the prestigious Basel hotel from the very first second. We started our trip with an aperitif on the hotel's own terrace. The view of the Rhine and the city is breathtaking, the service attentive, highly trained and extremely courteous. This was followed by dinner in the brasserie. In summary, a culinary highlight! Entrecote and ribeye cooked to perfection, lobster bisque perfectly seasoned and the Balik salmon lived up to its name. The whole thing was rounded off with a dessert from the dessert trolley and a fine glass of sweet wine.

About the rooms: 10/10 in terms of cleanliness, the same goes for the furnishings. We simply didn't lack anything!

Since the hotel is apparently currently undergoing some renovation, the fitness equipment was temporarily set up in the hallway on the first floor. However, this was not disruptive and you could still train in peace.
The Hotel Les Trois Rois, under the charming management of director Philippe Clarinval, lives up to its name and its awards! Many thanks to the whole team for this wonderful experience... we would love to come back!

Absolutely outstanding hotel, old-world style fully deserving of its 5 stars. The bar is incredible and the food in the brasserie superb. This is not a slick glass-fronted ultra modern hotel, but a classic old-school style where the staff outnumber the guests ensuring everything runs smoothly.
