Perched on a meander in the Amstel, the Omval area that Ruby Emma calls home was for decades the powerhouse of Amsterdam. The gas supplied from the Zuidergasfabriek helped light and heat the city. These days, the newly formed Amstelkwartier is a more idyllic spot, but the focus on energy remains. Taking our lead from the mariners who tacked their sails to harness the wind on the river’s tight turns, Emma’s all about using the power of nature. From the thermal aquifer that stores our hot water to the building’s smart façade that reacts to the elements to heat and cool the hotel, green energy runs through Emma’s veins. Inside, the rooms all feature our Lean Luxury touches, including a big, comfy bed, aromatherapy Ruby Care products, and soft, fluffy towels, along with a Marshall amp to add some oomph to your audio.

Just finished a 4 night stay in Ruby Emma. Pretty disappointed tbh! Spent nearly €800 for 4 nights, in resident room, that didn’t include breakfast. Words that are key, that went over my head when looking at the hotel were “Lean Luxury” - trying to do luxury on a budget. And it doesn’t work! Everything from previous reviews is true & still an issue… no spare pillows. No spare quilt. No ironing board in the room, have to go to communal area to use it - as my wife said, like we were in a hostel! In the room, the light at the door to say you want the room cleaned does not work, known issue - when cleaning the room they didn’t replace coffee capsules, and one day they did not clean the room at all! Self check in does not work, the room keys function does not work. I don’t know how long they need to fix these known issues. I do wonder as well if you were having some kind of emergency, there is no way from the room to contact reception. Even trying to ring the hotel ahead of the booking, no one ever answered. I do wonder if you had some kind of emergency in the room how you would contact anyone to help you!? Pro’s are bed is nice & comfortable, room is OK - couch had lot of stains, so did counter with coffee machine. Bar area is OK, location is good in terms of train next to it.

This was one of my favorite hotel experiences ever, and it’s all because of the design and the staff, the amazing staff. I don’t even have words to describe how wonderful this crew is, how kind, attentive, warm, helpful, and lovely they all are. My experience returning to Amsterdam was made infinitely more special because of them, and I am so grateful. Deepest thanks so Rishi, Ingrid, Selena, Serena, Lee, Elena, Gabriella, Magic, and everyone who made my stay so epically wonderful! You all are the absolute best, truly. Thank you for the care, the recommendations (Selena for Rotterdam, thank you!), and in generally just being so beautiful and diverse, such a picture of what I love the most about Amsterdam. Ruby Emma is a gorgeous hotel, beautiful design, and that is one of the primary reasons I decided to book here. As a designer, I make it a point to stay in boutique hotels when I travel, and sometimes the hotel itself is my reason for traveling. Returning to Amsterdam from London and Switzerland (by way of Chicago) for a bit of business and a bit of enjoyment, I wanted a place that was comfortable and also satisfying to my design sensibilities. Ruby Emma is absolutely stunning, every room design, the bar, restaurant space, elevators (which program to take you directly to your floor which is awesome), everything about it is really welcoming and sleek at the same time. Loved it! My room was a “Lovely” corner unit with views over the train (gentle, quiet, not disruptive and fun to watch) and southeast area of the city. The building is a modern high-rise a few train stops south of the city center in a more residential area with some industry developing, which worked perfectly for me. I looked at *many, many* other hotels around Amsterdam and when it came down to it, I didn’t want to be in the midst of tourist madness or in an older building with issues like backed up showers, paying more than Ruby Emma. This was the right fit for me and also a direct route along the Amstel River if you want to ride a bike to the center (bikes available for rental at RE). The room was stunning and just the kind of place I like to stay, inspiring and also great for personal photo shoots. Bed ultra-comfortable! Loved this space though it was a little weird configuration to have the bathroom near entrance and then walk all the way around the bed to get to the sink (and shower area). But no problem. It was well worth it. So grateful for Rishi and all the staff’s lovely smiles and warmth to welcome guests and his professionalism and expert help/recommendation setting up Google Maps (which saved me in the rest of my travels, too!) to navigate the city. One note to travelers: the ticket box at the closest train station (just a block away) was out of service when I was there so there was no way to buy a ticket to enter. I walked to the next station north, navigating through a lot of confusing construction on the road. It was not too far but for those with mobility issues or strollers, luggage, it may not be the best option. If you do take the train, buy the city train ticket from the silver box. I purchased the wrong train ticket so that was money wasted. You may want to set up the city trains app on your phone so you can purchase online and then just swipe your phone to enter. There is a convenience store around the corner that closes at 8 p.m., I think. There are vending machines on floors 1-5 that sell toiletries and other items but due to worldwide shipping issues, many items were out of stock. I was told I could get slippers there (which are not provided in room, a disappointment, also no robes) but went to each floor with no luck which was a bit frustrating. Found one dental kit but vending machine broken so had to ask manager in a.m. to deliver which thankfully they did. Ruby Emma has an interesting set-up where everything is done by the guest so no phones in the room and no texting to front desk. It was a bit strange given that other hotels specifically *ask* you to text them so a bit confusing (sincere apologies, Rishi, for any problem with texting, I didn’t realize it was emergency only!). If I need something, I don’t want to have to get dressed, come downstairs in the middle of the night or even day in order to ask. There should be some way to even just ask a question. There is a tea area with kitchen appliances on the lower floors so that was lovely to have access. Also, water pressure in my room was really poor, seemed a bit better in the middle of the night, but that’s an issue that needs to be fixed. The breakfast is incredible. Cheers to the chef and kitchen staff! Definitely recommend splurging for this or including it in your booking, and the lunch menu is so, so good. Really wonderful food, wine selections (ask for the Austrian white wine) and atmosphere. Also, check out the bathroom area at basement level good selfie options, and for business folks, the mezzanine floor co-work space is beautiful and expansive. All in all, this was an incredible experience at Ruby Emma and I will definitely consider staying here again when I return to Amsterdam. Many thanks to everyone! It’s you who make Ruby Emma the standout place it is and I hope that you are well compensated and appreciated for all you do to take such good care of guests.

A pleasant arrival at Ruby Emma Hotel & Bar - 2 night stay in LOFT ROOM 1401: With only a few minutes away from public transportation this location is a gem. Metro station is literally a few steps away, while a transfer to train or tram is a single hop. The metro comes and goes every 5 minutes in the direction of the city centre and is easy accessible. Booking through their website gave a good discount compared to the known booking portals. Check-in was simple, and ideal for the traveller that doesnt want to be bothered by a personal interaction or waiting que. Process can be done within 1 minute. Always someone ready to support, by just a simple "is it working", " did everything go well". Biggest pro's: 1. temperature / heating! - what you set is really the temperature you get. specially in these days of energy crisis this hotel is using an innovative way of seasonable energy storage, and heating goes trough floor heating. very nice! and warm. 2. private entrance / elevator - for going up and down, you get your own dedicated elevator almost every time. Within 25 seconds you get anywhere in the building by 6 super fast elevators. 3. The Bath. Dont book a room without it. The bath tub is modern, clean, and very spacious. there was a minor leakage in the hose/sprayer, but not a mayor issue. 4. Also for the shower, even on highest floors the pressure and temperature are perfect, having sufficient soap and shower gel options available. Will always find something that makes you feel super fresh and clean. well done! shower flooring could have been done better water doesn't naturally flow to drain from all locations that get wet, not a deal breaker. What can be done to make this the perfect experience: 1. Biggest impact on our experience - only 2 bed pillows in the room. Really easy to address - in the end it is about the sleeping comfort. It was missed to have a larger availability of options to make the bed experience a night to not forget. 2. The light - specially in evening. with all lights on, it is still a shady place. Brightest illumination was around the bathroom sinks. That is not where you want to live your moments. It would be recommended (specially in such big rooms) to have the option to create an area that is abundant with light. the 2 separate interior lamps are very weak and actually useless. 3. Some nice bath ingredients - to boost your senses while submerging in the hot water, enjoying the view. This a complimentary to the amazing shower experience. Some bubbles would be nice! 4. All this is limited to communicate, as there is no room phone or communication channel. I would assume this is part of the concept. Be aware you have to go down to the entrance for any interaction with the facility. Recommend for travellers to take the higher segment rooms, not only you will have a nicer view, but submerse yourself with this premium experience with a LOFT ROOM, with a bath and a view. Booking directly with the hotel gives you for the same price a premium "upgrade" for free.

The place is 4 stops from Central Station on the Metro and therefore easy enough into the centre of the city . The staff were really lovely and helpful - especially young Jose . The beds were so comfortable it was outrageous . You can borrow guitars from the reception too. Will stay there again ! Cheers all . Richard

Such a stunning hotel, the interior is just lovely. Very clean and open, check in so easy and quick. The bar is very intimate and the staff are very warm and welcoming. Lovely 2 nights stay. Will be back next time I’m in Amsterdam. Loved the speakers in the rooms as well, very quirky.

I stayed at Ruby Emma a couple of weeks ago. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The rooms are really cool. Everyone that works there is so friendly,y I feel like I've made new friends. Getting into central is one quick train ride away with the train station being across the road from the hotel. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was that there was no restaurants or many food places near the hotel. I highly recommend Ruby Emma. I cannot wait to visit again x

Access to public transport and the downtown was great! The hotel looked very nice and stylish from outside and inside! The staff were kind and friendly. The young gentleman who helped us checking-in, Mr. Jose, was very kind! The room was fantastic: clean and comfortable. It had a nice view of the city and rivers around. Breakfast was excellent. The atmosphere of breakfast and bar areas was great. We truly enjoyed our stay and will certainly consider coming back when we travel to Amsterdam in future!

Check-in took nearly an hour. For some reason the room was given to someone else so they do 'swaps' arrived in my room at 17h. The guy acted like he forgot us 3 times. After that i said this is very amateuristic. Especially since it was just to celebrate my birthday and had to loose an hour to drop my bags. The room was clean and nice. At 10:50 in the morning a knock at the door to leave the room for cleaning. Even when i waited 1 hour extra to get my room. I said the guy i needed more time, he said ok. At 11u40 they shut off our lights and closed the window blinds. So it was pitch black and had to use flashlights. Luckily we already packed. The hotel doesn't match the service. I was disappointed after booking the loft.

Room is great , modern, fantastic....just serious buts I do not need a guitar amplifier in my room, i need a coffee kettle though!!! Having free reception is kind of ok, but not in the middle of the corridor. Get a table to register and feel welcome...this looks like going to register for a microsoft convention If it would be possible to have a light breakfast without paying 24 euros, would be great. Besides mc donalds no alternatives around. Special mention for the staff...they are INCREDIBLY friendly and nice....with what they have on their hands....
