It was very difficult to find the place as the signeage was so small. It would help a great deal if the management gives a few landmarks like saying it's smack in the red light district and it is next to the Hash museum. The interior was a little gloomy and the breakfast was very basic. They were nice people...

We stayed at B & B 1680 for 4 nights during out short break to Amsterdam. The location is wonderfully central for everything and we left each morning in a different direction to explore the city. Although right on the edge of the red light district, there are some great bars right on your doorstep. We loved the room, the...

We stayed here for 3 nights as we needed to be close to the Dam and this venue was a 5 minute walk away = perfect The room, was nice. It had the original ceiling and there was a lovely chandelier, a beautiful old mirror and the bed was comfy too! We had a small fridge which was handy. The...

My husband and I had a 3day, 2 night stop in Amsterdam. 1680 was central to everything. We walked our legs off in every direction. Our room was big, with a soaring ceiling, huge windows, making the room light and airy. Although we did not see our hosts the email correspondence prior to our stay was prompt, courteous and very...

My wife and I flew from Boston, Massachusetts to Amsterdam and stayed at Joost and Dennis' B&B 1680 from July 5-7, 2013. Even prior to our arrival, our correspondes with Jooost had been excellent. He is accurate, conscientious and very polite. As for the location, all I can say is that I don't think there can be a more central...

The B & B 1680 is a pleasant place to stay in, but it has two big drawbacks (read on for those). Upon arrival the first thing we noticed was that the b&b was quite hard to find. If you are having trouble, look for the door beside the window with the wedding dress. The location of the b&b is...

I think they are having an identity crisis. Don't expect a B and B unless the second B stands for basket - which I may add along with the phone number for the taxi that I needed to phone at 5 am wasn't delivered on our final morning. Really disappointing finish. The toilet seat in the black and white room...

The B&B is in a very old house without elevator or a/c but with narrow winding wooden steps. It undoubtedly has character and atmosphere but not any more than that. You should not choose this b&b if you would like to see or talk to one of the staff or owners, if you like milk in your tea or coffee,...

We stayed in the white room at the back, neat, clean and comfortable with great shower. Breakfast was not spectacular, however there are so many great pastry shops in the area. This location is central to everything which is great for sight seeing. If you are looking for somewhere where you are free to come and go, left alone and...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
