We were at Amsterdam for the first time, so didn't actually orient ourselves there, and I gotta say that it was quite hard to find a hotel without having a map. And not a single passing by person knew the street name!

I guess it depends how far in to the centre you go. We spent most night at the bars around Leidespein, so from there it was about 30-35 minutes through the park. Even at 11 or 12pm, the park was still occupied by people and cyclists passing through with lights on. We never felt unsafe, but only did it a couple of times. As mentioned below, walking around and then along Willemsparkweg might be preferable and will be much more well lit.
The #2 tram runs very late though, beyond midnight, I believe.
