The Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam receives acclaim for its central location and elegant atmosphere, which guests find ideal for exploring the city's attractions and enjoying its historic charm. Many guests appreciate the spacious, tranquil rooms and spotless cleanliness, although some mention the decor feels a bit dated.
While the staff is often commended for their professionalism and attentiveness, there are occasional remarks about service delays and room temperature issues. The hotel's value is a point of contention; some reviewers feel the costs are steep relative to the provided amenities.

Detailed Reviews
I had a great time at the hotel, and the staff were wonderful. However, there were a few management decisions that made my stay less enjoyable:
1. Internet access used to be excellent, with speeds of over 90 Mbps. However, during this stay, I could barely get 8 Mbps even after seeking IT assistance. This made it difficult to stream TV shows, make FaceTime calls, or upload photos and videos.
2. The hotel has replaced soap bars with liquid soap in plastic bottles, which I found inconvenient and environmentally unfriendly. The bottles did not have working pumps, making it challenging to use them in the shower.
3. The air conditioner's thermostat was locked at 19 degrees Celsius, which I found too warm for my liking, especially considering the high cost of the room.
4. Despite having butler service in the suite, I was rarely able to reach the butler for assistance throughout my seven-day stay. This was frustrating and diminished the value of the service.
Despite these issues, I still love the hotel, especially the dedicated and impeccable staff who went above and beyond to ensure our happiness during our stay. It's unfortunate that the hotel's cost-cutting measures undermined the hard work of its exceptional personnel.

Hotel's Favourite
The SOFITEL THE GRAND in Amsterdam is a true legend. Everything is sublime. Beautiful courtyard, out of sight and quiet. During the summer season, the restaurant also offers terrace dining in a private courtyard. Two restaurants: one gourmet, the other simpler. Attractive whisky bar. The lobby is spacious and pleasant. Rooms are large, well-appointed and very well soundproofed. The "plus" is also the very conscientious staff, present but discreet, offering personalized service. There is a swimming pool. The hotel is right in the center of Amsterdam, just a few minutes from the train station.

Wow. What a gem of a place this is. Set in a historic listed building this hotel will not disappoint. You are welcomed by the doormen/concierge in the courtyard, offering to take care of your bags through to the reception area. Whilst checking in with Nicolas- a charming young Frenchman, we were offered a glass of champagne by his colleague, we were then taken through everything we needed to know, from the location of the restaurants, the traditional Dutch cocktail/whiskey bar to the spa and then shown to our room. Our room… we were upgraded to a junior suite over looking the entrance courtyard. Huge bath tub, gigantic cloud like bed, an amazing rain shower and a tv with QR codes to all the information we would possibly need for our stay. We booked a meal in bridges, a fine dining tasting experience. Again we were cared for by a wonderful team and taken through to the bar area to enjoy our complimentary welcome drink. For our first fine dining / tasting experience it really exceeded expectations. After enjoying a few too many glasses of wine in the evening we ordered room service breakfast, brought into the room on a beautifully laid trolley. Coffee served by a charming young team in the breakast area was delicious and they were all so friendly and welcoming. Overall our stay at the grand didn’t disappoint. The only negative would be that 1 night wasn’t long enough, we will definitely be back.

On many levels a great hotel- fantastic location, large rooms, decent breakfast. Excellent concierge and friendly staff. However the polish from a 5* hotel that you expect was missing - I emailed in advance for an early check in (we were travelling with children on a very early morning flight) and they understandably said there was no guarantee, but then on arriving at the hotel they were unsure about availability and told us to come back an hour before their standard check in time - which we did, only to sit there for another hour waiting in the lobby. In being shown to the room eventually only one of the 2 connecting rooms was ready and our bags, which had now been at the hotel for 5 hours already were no where to be seen and had to be chased. Poor. Ditto on checking out having asked for our bags to be brought down whilst we were having an early breakfast, we again stood in the lobby trying to track them down while our pre booked taxi waited: the bags were still in the room! Twice we were also asked to sign/ pay for breakfast when this was included in our rate. Rooms were spacious, if a bit tired, and bathrooms lacked hooks, and didn’t have toothbrushes or razors, plus were accessed by a big black marble step, that at night needed a white towel placed over it for fear of smacking into it! A good hotel but the ‘admin bit’ of looking after guests was not great- and not what you would expect from this type of hotel.

We are sorry to hear that your stay with us fell short of your expectations at Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will be investigating the issues you have raised to prevent similar occurrences in the future. We are delighted to hear that our ambassadors made a positive impression on your stay and that you appreciated the incredible location of our hotel. We are deeply regretful to hear about the unsatisfactory experience you had at the check in, with breakfast and with your suitcases. As you are aware the standard check in time is at 3:00PM and we are able to provide you and your family with an early check in however, they are upon availability which we are not always able to provide due to hotel's high occupancy however this does not justify all the other inconveniences you have faced. We kindly ask you to reach out to us at h2783-GR@sofitel.com so that we can discuss your stay further and work together to find a suitable resolution. Guest satisfaction is our top priority, and our ambassadors are committed to upholding the high standard of five-star service that we are known for, ensuring every guest receives nothing short of excellence. I recently stayed at the Sofitel Legend Amsterdam and overall, I had a great experience. The room was fantastic—spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed. The staff were incredibly nice and professional, making me feel welcome throughout my stay.
However, I do have a couple of suggestions. Room service could be more attentive, as I ordered a bottle of water twice and it never arrived. Additionally, it would be beneficial to offer complimentary water in the rooms, as the only option available was in the mini bar and came with a charge.
The highlight of my stay was undoubtedly the breakfast. It was enormous and delicious, featuring a vast buffet with a variety of options, all complemented by excellent and friendly service.
The hotel’s location is also a major plus, being centrally located in Amsterdam and providing easy access to all the main sights. Despite the minor issues, I would definitely recommend the Sofitel Legend Amsterdam for a pleasant and convenient stay.

This was the most memorable night we have ever had.
What a beautiful experience.
Upon entering you feel immediately at home and welcome.
We got an upgrade to an opera suite complete with its own butler.
The suite was breathtaking, so beautiful. You really have to see for yourself.
2 floors, the ground floor contains a sofa, chairs, dining table with chairs, coffee and tea and a Japanese toilet
Via a beautiful staircase you reach the first floor where there is a second toilet, the bedroom with king-size bed, large space bathroom with bathtub, walk-in shower and delicious products from Diptique.
We slept wonderfully and we were curious about the breakfast, also this exceeded our expectations.
A wide choice of cold and hot dishes, at the table you can order all kinds of egg, pancakes, frensh toast, waffles etc.
Overall it was fantastic!

Major tourist sites such as Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum, as well as Amsterdam Central Station, are about a 15-20 minute walk away, but Dam Square is within a 5 minute walk, so it's convenient to take the tram. Rokin Station is also about a 5 minute walk away, so it's also convenient to take the subway.
There are many restaurants, bars, and coffee shops serving cannabis around the hotel. As a result, it's a noisy environment with many people, but once you enter the hotel grounds, it's quiet like another world.
All the hotel staff are kind, but Flowerin, who serves breakfast at the restaurant, is especially friendly, and I look forward to having breakfast.
For breakfast, hot dishes such as eggs are made to order, and ham, cheese, vegetables, fruits, smoothies, yogurt, cereals, and breads are served buffet style.
The rooms do not have bathtubs except in some rooms, but they are clean.
A refrigerator, a safe, a free espresso machine, an electric kettle, etc. were available for use.
I would definitely like to use it again.

That magical feeling...
That magical feeling started when we were still approaching this historical building. It stands out gloriously with its unique beauty and architecture. Once we stepped into the hotel's courtyard we immediately felt we had magically reached an oasis, leaving the busy center outside. Magic again. We were warmly greeted at the door. We entered the lobby and both looked at the beauty around us till our eyes met again. My wife looked so happy. "We are finally here!" she said. Front desk was really welcoming and provided us with all the information we needed. Just a few minutes later we were opening the door to our beautiful room and magic took over us once again. Everything was perfect. The colors, the materials, the lighting, the canal views, the aura, the furniture, the bed, the little details, thr comfort, the overall ambience spoke immediately to our hearts. While enjoying the beauty around us we also noticed our place was spotlessly clean and so was the entire hotel. Magic again. The spa facility offers a wide range of massages and treatments. It also houses a very well equipped gym as well as an internal swimming pool, sauna and hammam. We had a wonderful experience there resulting in a relaxing, calming effect on both of us. Magic again. Going back to our room later that night, after a wonderful evening in the town, I slept like a baby and so did my wife, which is quite unusual for her as she is generally a bad sleeper. I think it has a lot to do with the bed quality and the overall relaxing ambience of the room. Magic again. We woke up the next morning fully refreshed and enjoyed an amazing breakfast with canal views. Wide variety, fresh materials and excellent service. Magic again. Our check-out was handled with professionalism and a warm smile making us feel valued till the last minute.
We have both traveled around the world extensively and stayed in numerous hotels. This one will always stand out for all the right reasons and hold a piece in our hearts.
We would both like to take a moment to thank Christina from reservations, Raluca from Front Office, Ellen and Elena from Housekeeping, Lilian from F&B and everyone else who contributed to our magical stay. Keep on the magic! Last but not least, we would like to apologize for the long essay but there was no way we could squeeze this magic into anything shorter!

My wife and I and daughter's family stayed here for one night after a post-Christmas river cruise. Reception was as if we were royalty with multiple staff meeting us and then escorting our group to check-in and on to our rooms. Was needed as they were using the "down time" resulting from The Netherlands' pretty strict lockdown to refinish the lobby's floor and so had an interim location. Our room (#448) was nicely furnished and had a view of a canal. Plenty of storage and a very comfortable bed. Only wish was that there were more lights, although that would probably reduce the romantic feel, We had been advised that only room service was available as the restaurant was closed. After they found out that there were 6 of us in our party traveling together, they graciously volunteered to let us use one of the suites so we could all dine together at a large table. Location of the hotel is very convenient in the old section of the city and easily walkable, as well as being away from the normally hectic central core. The tranquility was even more evident as hardly anyone was out either walking or riding bicycles because of the lockdown and most shops/restaurants/bars were closed. The property is very nicely furnished and since there were so few guests, it felt like our own, albeit large and opulent, home. Prices for room service were very reasonable for this type of property and the quality of the food/wine. Again, great property with excellent staff. Would stay here again without question.

Dear valued guest, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experiences with us after your recent stay in our hotel. We are very pleased to learn that you have had a comfortable and enjoyable stay after you returned from a river cruise. Sadly the hotel could not operate in its normal way due to the covid restrictions from our government but this also gave us the opportunity to personalize our service even more and to take that extra step to make your stay unforgettable. We are happy that this worked out well for you and I will certainly share your kind words with the team. I will also further discuss your comment concerning the lights in the room. Such comments are very valuable to us and we will certainly look into that. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back with us! Assuring you of our best care and attention I remain, Yours sincerely, Emmy J. Stoel General Manager

I was just here for one night but wish I could have stayed for longer! This was a special experience from beginning to end. This hotel is an oasis from the hustle and bustle just outside its gates. The team was very friendly and immediately provided attentive and comprehensive service upon arrival. This included booking me for a last minute lunch at Oriole and an hour at their Spa. Not to mention, I never lifted a finger throughout my stay; every coat was hung, every bag stowed or transported for my convenience.
Oriole itself was wonderful, with an excellent host who made me feel immediately welcome and a server who had the right wine pairing for every course. Branded as a garden bistro, this restaurant lives up to the claim with fresh food and serenity.
The spa was also a great touch and they managed to book me in despite being quite busy with holiday guests. I will say it would benefit from a more secluded and peaceful waiting area as there was a bit too much hustle and logistics to fully disconnect. I forgot all of this immediately during my massage/facial, which was one of the best I’ve received.
The central location of the hotel makes strolling the city a breeze, and the accommodation was classy without being stuffy. The huge windows and high ceilings were a very nice touch. The included breakfast was comprehensive and was a perfect send off with a gorgeous view of the canal and row houses.
My only regret is that I couldn’t stay longer! I’ll definitely return for my next stay in Amsterdam.

We usually get a Junior suite with a canal view, which has a big bedroom and a big living room with a sofa bed. It also has a big bathroom with a shower and a big bathtub. We love it. We stayed there for 3 vacations already.

Normal times like any luxury hotel guess they start 07:00
They have one at the back of the hotel.
We did not use the butler service. Their overall service was so good that we did not have a need for it. They do have an email, and are very prompt with their responses, so do ask them.
