Nestled in a central location with a charming canal setting, the Ambassade Hotel is a favorite for its artistic atmosphere and quality art, though room sizes do receive mixed reviews. Guests have called out the excellent amenities, including comfortable beds and a cozy library bar, while praising the hotel's spotless cleanliness. The staff's warm and helpful service is often highlighted, even when faced with occasional service hiccups. While some find the rooms spacious with stunning views, others note them as cramped. Overall, many justify the cost for the hotel's value and experience.

My husband and I fell in love with this hotel on our one week stay in Amsterdam. The very clean, superior deluxe canal view room was exactly what we wanted, giving us a gorgeous view of the canal and was spacious enough for the 2 chairs with table to have a glass of wine, read or play a game of cards at. We also made great use of the bar area, playing our daily game of backgammon with a wonderful cup of coffee served by the baristas. The library of over 5,000 books is fascinating and the Cobra artwork throughout the hotel is so tastefully hung. The stories behind the artists give such an insight to what was happening right after the war from 1948-1951 and I loved looking at the pictures to capture a glimpse into the feelings of each artist.

As for location, it couldn't have been better for all the walking we did, being close to restaurants and central to the museums on our itinerary. The 2 hour historic walk through the city with Eduard, the hotel historian was fantastic. He pointed out the key historic buildings, noted important information and answered all our questions along the way. The tour was so good!

Daily, we ate our breakfast in the Ambasade restaurant which was made to perfection and served by wonderfully delightful staff who soon got to know where we liked to sit and how we wanted our coffee. Each breakfast was excellent and enjoyable.

Last but not least, the friendly staff at the desk were amazing in helping us decide our itinerary for each day and welcomed us back with huge smiles after our day of exploring. This hotel and its staff made our stay absolutely fabulous! We're telling everyone how wonderful the Ambassade Hotel is!

There is nothing I would change about our stay at the Ambassade Hotel. Communication during the reservation process was prompt, friendly, and thorough. Check-in was flawless. Our room was comfortable and housekeeping did an excellent job. Assistance with luggage and our return taxi to the airport were 100%.

Changed my mind. There is something I would have changed if I could. I would have stayed longer.

We stayed here for two nights in Amsterdam for the first time. They were kind enough to respond to our inquiries at the time of booking and responded to our requests, such as rooms with extra beds and bathtubs. They were also very kind and friendly to me when I checked in, and I had a feeling that my stay in Amsterdam would be very comfortable at once. The room is as pictured. It's a period-style building with a soft bed-sofa table, a functional desk, a warm bathroom and comfortable towels, slippers and bathrobes. The buffet breakfast was impeccable, and the coffee, egg dishes and crepes were cooked and brought to us. One of them said, "Is it dangerous out there?" to the person at the front desk to take a walk in the early morning (still pitch black outside). A bit of silence… We took a short walk, as it was by the canal in front of the hotel. The bars and book corners by the front desk and the corridors with lots of art were all lovely. It is one of the good hotels to visit again.

The Ambassade Hotel has lots of very positive reviews which influential in our decisions to book. We liked the location and canal views, also thought it would be interesting to stay in a traditional canal building.

When we arrived, we learned that the staircase to the room is almost straight up. Management told us that they sent info about this and they sort of did in a vague manner. Not in our wildest imagination would we have understood the dangers involved in navigating that staircase. And...that staircase was filthy, possibly not been cleaned for years. One gets intimate with the floor when climbing slowly straight up!

The room was lovely if one did not look closely at the condition. The curtains in the bedroom were soiled, the walls all over were scuffed and in need of paint, there was a burned out light bulb in the bathroom directly over the mirror, one of the lamps in the bedroom was intermittently operational, the hairdrier was dead, and there were crumbs and smears in areas of the kitchenette. It seems to me that for a high end lodging, the hospitality staff would take much more care in ensuring cleanliness and operational conditions.

We are very cautious about airborne viruses, therefore, we do not eat indoors. We dress warmly with lots of layers and enjoy watching people walk by. When we inquired about nearby restaurants with terraces, we were told by the front desk agent that the outdoor service had ended for the season and that we could order from room service. Wow, that was such a fabrication! We found many many places to eat outdoors and there was one about four doors down from the hotel. It seems counterproductive to lie to a guest in order to steer them to room service. It left me very distrustful of anything else that they might tell us.

Speaking of fabrications, we arranged for a taxi to take us to the airport on the morning of our departure. I always pad the leaving time and I am glad that I did. The taxi came 20 minutes late. We were assured that when we booked the ride that it would be very reliable. Ugh!

Overall, we enjoyed our time in Amsterdam, as it is a very charming city. If we travel there again, we will look for a different hotel to sleep in.

Dear Sir, Madam, Thank you very much for this detailed feedback and thank you for choosing the Ambassade Hotel to spend your time in Amsterdam. We do have to say we cannot agree with everything you wrote, I'm afraid. You have been well informed (in writing) about the stairways, immediately after making the reservation. And upon arrival the hotel even gave you a choice of suites. We cannot believe the chosen suite wasn't clean. Even if it would have been, you refrained from housekeeping during your stay, upon your strict request, so not giving our staff the chance to double-check. Requiring all our staff to wear facemasks and rubber gloves at each contact did not make communication easier. But our staff has always given adequate information: not saying that it is impossible to eat outdoors, just informing you there is not much chance in finding a restaurant of quality with outside seating when the temperatures are 7 degrees, and when windy/rainy in November. Being called liars is quite an accusation... Maybe the Ambassade Hotel was not the best hotel for you, hope you will keep enjoying Amsterdam in the future. Eelco Douma, Ambassade Hotel

We enjoyed a fabulous stay at the Ambassade last week for a short holiday in Amsterdam. The staff was friendly and helpful from the start. The location is perfect -- central and walkable to all major sites and transportation options, including the tram, which is an easy way to traverse the city. The room was lovely -- quiet and comfortable with a beautiful view of the canal. We enjoyed dinner in the restaurant one night, and though we had not planned to, we enjoyed breakfast each morning in the hotel and appreciated the friendly service as well as dining among the artwork. In fact, we learned the hotel has more than 800 original works of art adorning the walls. The staff was so helpful in booking last-minute canal cruises, helping with restaurant recommendations, ordering taxis, and other helps. The only remark/advice for future guests is to alert staff if you have mobility issues as some rooms require traversing narrow stairs.

Thank you to all the staff at the Ambassade for a wonderful stay in your lovely hotel. We appreciated all you did to make our stay comfortable and special!

Thank you so very much, Amy, it is really heartwarming reading your nice words about the location, the atmosphere, the service and the art-collection. And indeed we always encourage guests to inform us when having difficulty with stairs: although an occasional step is unavoidable, we have a large number of rooms that can be reached by lift. Thank you once again for your visit and your great review, it would be fantastic seeing you back some day. Eelco Douma, Ambassade Hotel

Our stay at the Ambassador was very enjoyable and the hotel is in a great location within walking distance to many attractions. We arrived early on the morning of our booking and the staff were more than happy to store our luggage, to be placed in our room when it was ready. We were aware the room was two levels with a sitting area on one and the bedroom on the other. When we arrived back after some exploring of the city, we were escorted to our room by a new staff member who was not well versed on the room - She advised the bathroom was on the upper level but it was actually on the sitting room level and she neglected to provide instruction on various features (such as the curtains being controlled by a remote), however we managed to muddle through on our own, including carrying the luggage up a very steep flight of stairs to the sleeping area. While all of the the staff was very pleasant, I would have expected for the price of the room a little more assistance with the luggage at least. Despite these issues we enjoyed our stay. The room was comfortable and the breakfast east morning very good. I just felt that given this was probably the most expensive hotel we have stayed in, a little more attention to these details would have been in order.

Thank you very much for your visit, your kind wirds and for your rating, Madam, this is greatly appreciated. After reading your review we felt some research was needed and can now only apologise for the few things that lead to some confusion. it was obviously a very hectic moment and our new employee-lady did all she could but was not fully aware of the particulr lay-out of your room. Very sorry for that, both she and the porter who did his previous work, should have been instructed better! We truly hope it will not hold you from visiting again, please do not hesitate to contact me personally! Best wishes on behalf of all at the Ambassade Hotel, Eelco Douma

This is a beautiful boutique hotel. The staff was very friendly & helpful.

There are a couple things that Hotel could do to improve customers experiences. #1. The hotel has two different buildings connected together. It would be most helpful to have a system of discrete different colored stripes, that would lead you to your room as it is an absolute maze. We ran into people wandering the halls trying to find their rooms. If you work there, of course, you know the building. But if you’re only staying for a day or two, it can be quite challenging to put it mildly .

#2. I find most Americans make their beds with top sheets. Apparently this is not customary in Amsterdam & maybe elsewhere in Europe. With that said we asked that the beds be made with top sheets. We arrived back, after a long day of touring, to find the top sheets sitting on top of the beds, along with the towels for the day- meaning for the money paid for the room, you would think they could put the towels in the bathroom -where they belong. And of course the sheets on the bed.

Other than those two things the hotel is located in a great location and as I said the staff is wonderful.

Thank you very much for these wonderful words, Richard, and thank you for your visit. We have to agree that, being located in 10 formerly seperated buildings, the way to certain rooms can sometimes be a bit confusing. Of course upon check-in an employee always guides the guests and helps with the luggage, furthermore there are the little sings on the walls, showing the way to reception. Our apologies for housekeeping probably neglecting your request for American-style topsheets, we have instructed the staff members now once more on how to set this up. We are grateful for your very kind words about the staff though and hope it will not hold you back from visting again on a future occasion. Best regards on behalf of all of the team, Eelco Douma, Ambassade Hotel

From check in and throughout our stay we found all the staff we encountered to be welcoming, friendly and helpful. This really made a difference. The hotel is an elegant combination of canal houses situated in a fantastic location. We were able to walk everywhere from the hotel - nowhere we visited was more than 25 minutes walk away.

Our room, no. 45 (superior deluxe canal view), wasn't the biggest we have stayed in at comparable hotels in other cities, but was tastefully furnished with quality furniture and fitments. Within the boudaries of being within an old traditional building they have made excellent use of the space and the panoramic view of the canal was inspiring. The bottle of wine left in our room to welcome us was much appreciated. It was very cold in the five days of our stay but our room was always warm and a pleasure to return to. The bathroom was perfectly functional without being anything special except for the under floor heating which was lovely. The walk in shower was small and could be improved with a smaller waterfall shower head so that you can move your head out of the water flow when washing hair.

Breakfast was superb each morning. The buffet selection and a la carte choices were excellent and just what we needed to prepare ourselves for an active day of sightseeing. Special mention must be made of the delightful lady from Ukraine who welcomed us to the restaurant each morning and couldn't have been more helpful and friendly.  Always a good start to the day.

On the Tuesday and Thursday mornings our room was serviced to the high standard one would expect. However, on Wednesday morning the service was a bit lacking with a dirty wine glass left out and toiletries not replenshed but that didn't worry us particularly so we didn't complain. There was some noise in the middle of the night on our last two nights as the restaurant next door to our room was being cleaned but we reported that when checking out so I'm sure it will be rectified in future.

On our first morning we had a private 'Art and History' walking tour of the city, arranged  by the hotel, with Eduard which was very good and a great way to start our time in Amsterdam. Eduard is very knowledgeable and I'm sure he adapted his commentary as he picked up on our interests. We would thoroughly recommend this optional tour to anyone visiting Amsterdam for the first time

Overall we very much enjoyed our stay at the Ambassade and would definitely recommend it to our friends. If we visit Amsterdam again we would definitely choose to return to this hotel.

Dear Sir, Thank you very much for your wonderful and detailed review, this is greatly appreciated and also helps us! It is good to know you were very satisfied with your stay and we are therefore even more sorry to ready housekeeping was only 99% during one of the days, we will make sure it won't happen again. And also sorry for some noise from the restaurant, this shouldn't happen at all and will also be discussed internally. Furthermore: most certainly your compliments about the Art and History Tours will be forwarded to our private guide Eduard, he will be very happy hearing this. And please, yes, do return in the future, we would be so happy! Amsterdam has very much to offer in the summertime... Thank you once again on behalf of the entire staff, Eelco Douma, Ambassade Hotel

This hotel met all our expectations and the reviews I read before booking and going there were 100% spot on! We booked one of the 3 grand suites 5 months in advance and the description matched the suite exactly. We spent 7 days here and did the "Little Venice" all day tour with the clog and cheese factories and a cruise and food tour and went to the major museums.
We arrived in the morning at the hotel but our room was not ready until 3pm. William, the day bellhop greeted us at the steps and brought our luggage in as there are steps going down to the main entrance. He always greeted us with a smile in the morning as we left for our activities. The housecleaning staff always had a smile when we saw them in the morning. Luther introduced himself to us when our room was ready and showed us the 2 elevators we would need to take to get to the room. I was still getting lost with getting to the elevators throughout our stay here. It was like a maze. He also gave a tour of the suite which is what I expected. I do not recommend the two level rooms to anyone with walking challenges as the spiral staircase in these rooms can be challenging for anyone with walking issues. We left our luggage in the living area and carried clothes up the stairs.
The hotel has connecting buildings but we chose to stay in the main house. We had the breakfast plan and all the staff were hospitable and the buffet and made to order menu was what we expected- quality items. In conclusion, the Ambassadre met all our expectations and I would return there in the future!

Dear New Yorkers, We thank you very much for writing these lovely lines, we are very happy to know you had such a great week in Amsterdam and at the Ambassade Hotel. Your appreciative notes shall also be shared with Wiliam and Luther and the cleaning-staff, they will be really glad. And sorry about the stairs...: there are strict limits in altering our historical buildings when renovating, but reading your nice message, we do not think it was too much of an inconvenience to you. Thank you once again for your stay and we hope to see you back sometime. with all the best from everyone at the Ambassade Hotel, Eelco Douma

The Ambassade is charming and soooo well located. Right at the seam between the Spui and Nine Streets neighborhoods; we could walk to everything. We booked about 7 months prior, and our rates were competitive with other West Canal Ring hotels. Our deluxe room (no 18?) turned out to be almost like an apartment. It was situated in the "attic" of the northernmost of the combined townhouses that form the hotel, and had it's own internal stair, lovely bathroom with heated floor, and bedroom/sitting room with a view out the former hoist window over the Herengracht. Breakfasts (included in our rate) are served in their restaurant dining room and had a nice assortment of cold items and hot menu availability. We got a great start to each of the five days we stayed at the Ambassade. The staff was very friendly and helpful. My only (really minor) knock is that the owner has decorated the hotel with art from the COBRA movement (and is clearly proud of the collection). It's not my taste and somewhat dark and aggressive in its slash-and-scribble abstract form. But, at least it is real art, not generic hotel decoration. Art choice aside, if you want a distinctive and friendly hotel in the heart of the old city, one that serves as a great home base for lots of Amsterdam attractions and neighborhood exploring, I wholeheartedly recommend the Ambassade. We would absolutely return.

Thank you very much for this fantastic note, Mr and Mrs Tullis. It is so nice to know you enjoyed your visit and your stay in room 18 so much. Sorry the CoBrA-art does not really have your interest, we do understand but hope it will not hold you back from visting again. We can't wait to see you back, after all from Logan to Schiphol is one of the shortest flights... ;) Best wishes from everyone at the Ambassade Hotel Eelco Douma

That depends on what size room you book. My room was quite suitable for one, possibly two people. It had one large bed. Obviously, you would need a larger room. I’m sure they have them. I suggest you check the website. That aside, I strongly recommend this hotel, the food, staff, and location are great. Have a wonderful trip!
