My partner and I stayed at Heart of Amsterdam for a total of four days in February of 2011. Overall we very much enjoyed our stay here, however it should be stressed that we were in no way seeking the highest of quality in our accommodation. Whilst the location can't be beaten for access to Amsterdam's infamous Red Light District,...

AVOID THIS HOSTEL. I've stayed in a lot of hostels, don't have tremendously high standards and am not a prude, but this was horrible. Heart of Amsterdam? I think they need an anatomy lesson. I reckon they might have meant Armpit. The first problem was the bathrooms - the showers have been squeezed in behind the toilets so you have...

Booked this hostel for 3 nights, wanted to stay here due to it being very central and within walking distance to most attractions, i.e. anne frank and van goghs museum. My friend and I (22 and 23yrs old both girls) were not sure what to expect of this hostel as there was mixed reviews on here. I myself have never...

We arrived in Amserdam not knowing where to stay. Found this hostel right in the heart of the red light district, very cheap for the city, unique views (with characters changing every couple hours) from my window, and the environment inside was interestingly changing all the time. Do not expect nothing fancy or formal, this hostel will get you the...

The Heart of Amsterdam is obviously... in the heart of Amsterdam, and this means seeing prostitutes dancing in their windows right across the street. If that does not bother you, then this place is great. The beds were comfortable, and every bed had an outlet nearby. The location was nearby everything including coffeeshops, the main streeet, sex shows, and lots...

This hostel does what it says on the tin.. it is in the "heart of amsterdam". This Hostel was ideal for our trip to amsterdam for a 21st birthday and it is literally right next to the Red Light District, if not in it. Each room in the hostel has a different movie theme which was really cool, our room...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
