Hotel Roemer garners praise for its central location, with guests appreciating its proximity to local attractions and transport links, alongside comfortable bedding. However, some guests report inconsistencies in maintenance and housekeeping. While the friendly service is a highlight, the value for money is questioned due to the perception of high prices and unmet expectations in room quality and additional costs. The atmosphere receives mixed reviews, with mentions of a welcoming environment but also outdated decor and noisy whirlpool baths.

I’d like to first say that the front desk staff here are very well mannered and helpful! I didn’t feel nervous about asking them for anything and they were so nice and kind. There’s plenty of overpriced beverages in the lobby for the beginning of your stay in case you need something to drink. Beds are comfortable and overall it’s a decent stay. Location is great for museums and trams.

I will give some honest feedback about a few things that we noticed…

1.) My first room was the smallest economy room. The room itself was fine but the shower.. oh the shower. Whoever designed this didn’t design the water to drain fast and inside the drainage that is built. Water was ALL over the floor after showers. I booked an executive room for the last part of my stay and the only positive thing regarding the shower was we had more space to skip over the big water puddles :(. I see why people think the showers are dirty but my friend explained that they weren’t dirty they just had a lot of rust from years of showers and they are nearly impossible to get rid of.

2.) We stayed in room 11 during our last night and in the morning the staff room was incredibly loud directly next to our door. Although we are very laid back and wouldn’t have mind if it was brief, it did seem to carry on loudly for sometime. We were surprised at this considering they knew we were there..

3.) We did find a used tissue inside the chair in our room as well. I would say the housekeeping staff just needs to be more more visual about these things!

This is a very small boutique hotel on a quiet side street that is within walking distances to all the big museums. If you are not used to European hotel room sizes you will find the rooms small, but they are serviceable and comfortable. The beds are moderately comfortable, the pillows were nice and soft. The staff are welcoming and friendly. The bathroom is bigger than the rest of the room would suggest. The only negative is that the shower head sprays straight out to the shower door, which has a large gap between the door and the floor. This caused the entire bathroom floor to soak with standing water after showering. There is drainage and it does drain, but not fast enough to avoid standing water.

Very good location near National Museum and Leidselplein Street with plenty good restaurants. Tram stop is also near and connection to Centraal Station and city center is easily reached. Hotel Roemer have bigger Junior Suites aprox. 30 m2 on 3rd floor and other rooms 1st and 2nd floor are much smaller aprox. 18 m2.

Rooms are relatively quiet and there are no restaurants on the street. Only negative is that air condition main unit is above 3rd floor Junior Suites, and it will generate low frequency humming noise that might disturb you sleeping. We are sensitive sleepers and we always travel with 3M earplugs for minimize extra noises.

Elevator is modern at Roemer and it is a must in Netherland hotels due very very narrow and steep stairs.
Breakfast is ok but basic, and you can order fried eggs, pannekoeken and such if you need more that is offered.
If you book a room without breakfast included prepare to pay 15-18 euros/person/day. For us breakfast was good in quality and items available.

Honest Bar is very innovative concept at Roemer Hotel.

I don’t like leaving negative reviews, however for this hotel I feel it’s needed so that future customers can have a better experience and value for money.

We arrived to our room via messy hallways and cleaning supplies/dirty sheets dumped outside the door. I understand the cleaning process is essentially, but to throw it outside the guests doors is very off putting.

In the room the “whirlpool” bathroom was filthy. Stains all over the marble walls and bath floor. The staff insisted this was “by design”. The bedside fridge was also filthy.

Reception were friendly and good to allow us to change rooms. Unfortunately the replacement room was also dirty, but a small improvement on the original.

My advice to the hotel would be to improve and clean the rooms, or downgrade the description of them. At present the rooms do not fit the desirable descriptions.

We arrived and I soon realised my bedside lamp wasn't working, and the safe in our room had a fault which resulted in all our travel money and passports being locked in, we only managed to open the safe after worriedly entering the password we set up three or four times. I reported these issues to the red-haired man on the reception, he said you don't know how to use the lights properly, they're fine and the safe probably needs a new battery but they'd look into it. I replied that we've stayed in this hotel twice before and I know how the lights work here.

4 days go by with nothing being done about this, so I enquire again at reception with a different staff member who says there is no record of any of these issues being logged on the system. He says the maintenance man won't come until after the weekend. I ask if he has a spare light bulb just so I can solve the problem myself, and be able to use the lamp for reading without a further delay. He gives me an old bulb which I later realise, has fused. 2 days later, the red haired man comes with a maintenance man to change the bulb after again checking whether I know how lights work the day before. No apology for not reporting this, and not a great manner with guests. The bulb is fixed by the end of our 7 day stay, we never found out if the safe was fixed. We didn't want to risk trapping our passports and cash in there a second time.

This was our third visit, this place used to be way better before the pandemic, our room had badly stained carpets and furniture and the carpets weren't vacuumed properly. The service just isn't good enough for a 4 Star hotel, and some of the staff really don't seem interested in providing a good service. It's sad what's happened to this hotel.

I'm conflicted with this hotel, the location great, the building attractive, and the transport links (as in most of Amsterdam) are spot on.

The staff I met were all friendly and helpful, and the restaurant recommendation sheet was a useful touch.

The lounge area is generally well appointed and has an Honesty bar which was well stocked and reasonably priced. Shortly after checkin a hand-written note and voucher for a free drink were placed by the door. This was a nice touch and appreciated.

The bed was comfortable enough, and bedding and towels were clean. Tea & Coffee were restocked by housekeeping.

Sadly that brings me to the negatives.

Specific to my particular room is that the downstairs layout is such that Room17 really shouldn't be a hotel room, but should be part of the lounge area.

The access to the room felt like I was walking through a (short) service corridor. The carpet is very worn and the floorboards scuffed up. The kitchen was left open constantly and in the morning the noise from deliveries and food prep woke me up around 5am.

There is no privacy due to the bed being directly next to the garden window, so the curtains have to be closed whenever you are in the room and if other guests are in the garden in the evening they will keep you awake.

Whilst the bed was comfortable, the room had twin beds but no space around or between. Just put in a double/king. The room in general was grubby and tired, it feels like it's overdue a redecoration at least 3 years. There are bloodstains & holes on the net curtains, and numerous cracks, plastered over screw holes and water stains on the wall. I understand it is an old building but things like this just look shabby. COVID was perhaps a missed chance to renovate? Simple things like the lampshade over the table being scratched up and the flex being filthy and covered in paint splashes.

The bathroom urgently needs a deep clean & maintenance, there are stains everywhere, embedded dust in corners, and black mold growing on the grout. One handle for the shower is missing, the sink tap is leaking from the base, the smaller of the flush buttons for the toilet does not function and two lights in the bathroom also do not work.

The whirlpool bath is a nice touch, but sounds like a jet engine taking off and is amplified by the tub, it feels as if a motor has been mounted incorrectly causing the resonance. Lighting in the bathroom is so bright that it's not a relaxing experience.

We only stayed in Amsterdam for one night so we came to the city pretty early. The two guys at the front desk barely greeted us when we arrived. from the start it felt like we were more of a bother to the staff than appreciated hotel guest. Working at a hotel myself for a few years and in the service industry my whole life has made me very aware of details. The first thing I noticed was the state of the two guys behind the desk. They looked like the just got out of bed. Their shirts were not ironed, their nails were long and dirty and their hair was barely combed. add to that that the floor and the walls of the front desk area looked like it hadn't been properly cleaned in weeks. We were a group of nine people and had booked 6 rooms in total(some of us sharing rooms). Eventhough all the rooms were supposed to be charged on one credit card we had to do one transaction for each room. and everyone who's ever done travel expense knows how much more work this creates. Ones all of this was sorted we put our luggage away in a closet since the rooms weren't ready yet(which was totally fine). After a few hours of Amsterdam we came back to get settle in to the rooms. When we arrived at the hotel the same guy from before was still behind the counter. We asked for our luggage and he just opened the door for the closet and let us take out our own luggag, without checking that we actually took the right bags(anyone could take any bag or suitcase they wanted). Once we got our bags and the room keys we headed up to the rooms. Two of the guys got keys that didn't work, one of the females in our group got a key to a room that was already occupied. Everytime one of came down to the front desk again to ask for them to fix their mistake we got met with an attitude like we were asking them to run a marathon hungover. We overheard the manager telling his employees to charge us five euros if we asked for anything else. The rooms were of good size but not very clean. I can only properly speak for my room but that was horrible. It smelled a bit funky, the walls looked like somebody had splashed water on them, it was dusty and the drain in the shower had enough hair in it to create a nice rapunzel wig with. The only thing that almost stopped me from writing this review was the gentleman at the front desk that was working the afternoon when we left around 17.00 on the 21st of september. He was very helpful getting out luggage and event though he had a big group arriving at the same time he managed to multitask and still keep a big smile on his face and deliver great services to us and this group. Big props to this fine gentleman. You should get him to teach the rest of the staff on how to look and behave towards paying hotel guests.

The hotel is located in a great area close to Vondel Park, museums, and Leidseplein however we were extremely disappointed with our stay. We waited over an hour to CHECK IN and when we asked if there will be any compensation and they no and did not offer anything. Upon waiting the staff said they would go and check if the room was clean which should of been done already and finally when he came back, he said we could go to the room. Once we got to the room, it was very dirty. The toilet was not cleaned from the guests before, no toilet paper, dirty floors, windows and mirrors. The carpets were not vacuumed and had alot of dust and dirt on them.

The staff seemed to be overworked and tired. Which made it uncomfortable for guests to ask them for assistance as you felt they weren't very keen to assist guests.

The breakfast has very little options and if your a few minutes late you will get a few nasty comments about being charged if you get another coffee. We did not feel comfortable and wouldn't recommend staying here.

Our room seemed to be clean enough, but the mud coloured walls and carpet in the bedroom gave the opposite impression, this was enhanced by the large ceiling light in the centre of the room which was covered in dust, that became even more apparent when it was lit. The hotel location is great, within easy walking distance of the museums and many attractions. You can walk out in the morning to visit most of the centre and amble back late afternoon and put your feet up before going out for the evening. This pleasure was spoilt for us as the room was not made up until after we returned at 5pm. The bed was comfortable, but had a thick top mattress that migrated across the bed to hand of the side when sitting up reading. This is a hotel were you will want to use the lift as the almost spiral staircase has very narrow treads which test your agility. The small breakfast room is lovely, only spoilt by the staff having to use it as a passageway to the rear of the building so having to negotiate their way between tables and guests. The range of food on offer is good, but not exceptional. All the staff we had contact with were excellent. In many ways it is lovely hotel, but not 4 star.

Great location. Traditional Dutch architecture Friendly welcome at reception. The rooms look tired and in desperate need of an upgrade. The furniture is second rate. Next to the bathroom sink in the little tray for soap and, vanity set etc, I was provided with four little she shine boxes. Nothing else. No soap. No vanity set. No tooth brush. Just four identical shoe shine boxes.
In the cupboard is a glass-fronted fridge. It was empty except for half a bottle of rose.
Whoever had cleaned the room had not even checked the cupboard.
Oh and the pillows are lumpy.
Overall, not good enough. Won’t be coming back.
