Please, please do not be tempted to stay in this hotel. The room strongly stank from some unknown cause - not cigarette smoke. Our twin-room was very small and ultra basic - just two beds, some shelves and a basin. No bathroom, no tea/coffee making, no phone, no TV, nothing. There was a small upholstered footstool that was heavily stained...

Laast minute decision to visit Amsterdam over the Easter weekend end me up here. Except for a very helpful and friendly guy at reception there was actually nothing positive regarding the hotel. It is a shared toilet but at least a shower in the room. The light in the shower was working but some cold water was dripping through the...

Our first time in Amsterdam and we drove from Germany. Amsterdam is very difficult to drive in as they are a very bike/pedestrian friendly city. As such, lots of the very narrow streets have bollards to stop cars using them. Because of this, when we arrived at about 2pm we called the hotel to get directions, only for the call...

Simple place in a very central area. We stayed here for one night only. We just needed a place to crash. The staff was unpleasant, almost rude. Our room shared shower and toilet with another room. But it was cheap and very central.

As budget hotels go, and I've stayed in several in Amsterdam, I seen absolutely nothing wrong with this hotel. Location couldn't be better, facing the Old Church, right on the doorstep of the Red Light District, 1-2 minutes walk from all bars in the area. Staff were mostly friendly and helpful. The lobby area looked like it had been recently...

The rooms are at the 3rd floor and the stairs are very steep. The room smelled like piss and the bed was full of stains. Owner is a very repulsive guy. We couldn't stand the smell of the room so we left the hotel five minutes after we checked in and he refused to refund us.

Room wasn't the cheapest. At Least it was private and fairly clean. But there was NO FAN OR AIRCON at all and the Windows hardly opened. And in 35deg c days. The room is unlivable with no air movement

Great location but hotel is very poor . Shared toilet and bathrooms. Very small rooms and have a few bites from bed bugs i think . Was sort of clean but expected a lot better for 420 euros for 2 days .

I booked this hotel because it was the cheapest I could find and close to the railway station. I was worried it would be a bad area in the Red Light District, but it was a really nice and cozy area on a small canal street with lots of restaurants. Only a few minutes walk from the railway station and...

We booked a last minute spur of the moment trip to Amsterdam and booked this hotel with out even looking at the pictures let alone the reviews. Room- We had a twin room, two single beds and sink. The room was tiny and right up on the top floor but this is to be expected in central Amsterdam unless you...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
