Let us check in early and even have us a free upgrade! Lovely staff and atmosphere. The room was unique, clean and the beds are comfortable, perfect for a few nights! The metro was across the road and it was easy to navigate to get to the centre of Amsterdam.

Like an Aldi giving the impression of value , IKEA for the standardised wood/metal builds, and Ibis with the metal and concrete, with the exception of its uniqueness - art work isn’t bland, quirkiness mid-range+ in cost for Amsterdam 4 metro stops south. We paid about AUD$1,000 for 3 nights / 3 adults, so you’re paying for the value-adds like access to sauna, hot tubs and marketing / atmosphere. Positives: Close to metro. Hot tubs (no extra cost) Laptop area (also available to the public so it’s busy) Quirky & community support based in the marketing and creation of atmosphere Great views from restaurant level 7 Clean Good security Art work on walls and decor to spruce up what would otherwise look like a rather brutalistic looking building 24x7 reception Fast at replying to emails No room charge option until the day of your stay - recommend asking your inspect the room before committing if you’re unsure. Good information brochure given though it’s missing some key info such as laundry services. Instructions for finding the hotel were good, though you need to check the Metro sign before going up the escalator to ensure you’ve exited on the end that they’ve referenced in the instructions. Negatives Relatively expensive though 4 metro stops out from the centre of Amsterdam. Marketing may not be appealing to everyone. Revamped building (previously a newspaper business from other reviews I’d seen, which might explain the solid concrete floors able to support suspended beds) made to work as hotel - small unappealing lifts (the hotel tries to make a virtue of negatives, including feedback posted in their publication for entertainment). Some beds are suspended from ceiling by metal rods and limited barriers - may be a safety issue for kids climbing up. No power points near suspended bed. They didn’t make our studio room bed for a 3rd person - have to make yourself - a bit rich given the pricing. Actually it appears as though all the spaces are of a similar size, so studios with kitchenettes and balcony end up looking quite cramped and may be some distance from the lifts along the L section of the building. The 3rd person is expected to make a sofa bed - but it’s not a proper bed - only the large blocks that make up the sofa - very narrow. Non-studio rooms have no kettle - they’ll allow you to obtain hot water from the cafe on ground level for free. No special access to laptop work area - vying with members of the public - trying to be inclusive and exclusive with some hotel services. Buffet is ok but a little light on variety nothing to write home about for 14.50 euro. Hotel was good at helping us change to a standard room after we were not happy about the studio room - but the reception staff member initially downplayed the price difference “as only a few euro” - after insisting it was calculated at over 97 euro - added to our replacement room credit with a charge of 1 cent to check our debit card (after we already used it to pay). Upshot - have your wits about you and ask for the manager if you feel the reception staff may be a little dismissive of your customer rights as was initially the case for us. We were told that we couldn’t get a refund but only a credit (as we already agreed to pay for the studio room) and wouldn’t provide a proforma tax invoice showing the account credit. Their email help was good - responded quickly and provided both invoices and refunded any outstanding credits back to our card at the end of our stay). Rules a bit confusing / inconsistent - rules shown near lifts on Ground level say not to bring in food etc from outside - the hotel information they provide clarify this - it means don’t bring into their cafe, restaurant etc - they’re not stopping you bringing your own snacks to your room - what hotel would do this? Some reviewers mistakenly thought that is what they were saying. Their newspaper contained nudity - viewer discretion advised - though this is Amsterdam, not Singapore. One of the designated smoking areas is outside the main doors of the hotel, so you may cop smoke walking in - though this isn’t an uncommon scenario in Europe. The spaces around the hotel and in the lifts s a little dark / dingy, countered by the quirky decor and artwork motifs.

Let’s start with the good ! Showers were incredible, hot, powerful and the shower heads were sparkling clean. We had a twin room the beds are very close together but we were comfortable. Roof top hot tubs and sauna were a fantastic way to finish your day walking around Amsterdam. 7th floor bar was very fun in the evening (didn’t get into the nightclub it was full) Metro is a minute walk away and so easy to get around on the trains and trams nearby. The not so good ! The pillows are a tad odd, one large square which I found awkward to sleep on. The windows let in a loud howling/whistling noise which made it difficult to sleep at times when the wind picked up. When we checked in the lady in reception wished me a happy birthday as I was turning 30 during our stay, and told me we’d had a free room upgrade. However when we got to our room it was the twin room we booked.. so a little confused by that. Overall a nice stay 😊

Fantastic location and crew! Especially nights you may have good fun there. Top of the building, the view is definetely stunning! I will certainly choose this hotel for my next Amsterdam trip. Even you just want to study about something, they have a place like a library... So nice...

Absolutely loved this hotel, quirky, good location for us, loved our studio! not my first time to Amsterdam but would definitely consider this hotel again in the future, I almost wish we would have had more time just to hang out in the hotel. Don't listen to the reviews about rude staff or staff not looking like they want to be there, any staff I dealt with, were always polite with a smile on their face. The only reason that I haven't given the full marks was the breakfast, I stupidly paid 15 euros each for breakfast before checking what was there, basically paid 15 euros for a couple of bites of rubbery scrambled eggs, a slice of bacon and a coffee so chose to eat elsewhere after that. Sorry Volks crew, was the only letdown and it certainly wouldn't stop me from coming again

Not the best. Reviews are very out of date. Had a cabin, oh my god it was hideous. Tiny box of a room, shared bathroom between 6 cabins, of course booking.com did not make that clear, every time i needed to get dressed my husband had to wait outside the room, terrible. Hotel was nice, staff rather slow. Breakfast was awful, described as buffet but that was a stretch of imagination, husband and son got a croissant, for 15 euros a head!!! Coffee was terrible, but nicer in the reception area. However can't get a coffee past 10pm because the machine had been cleaned!!!!!!!! Terrible customer service. Good views but the cabins do not have them, until you brush your teeth. Shame as our room was the worst part about our visit.

Pleasant stay at Volkshotel. We booked the Soixante Neuf special room, which was lovely. The bathtub with super view really made the room stand out. The bed was quite high up to get onto so I wouldn’t recommend if you struggle with mobility. There wasn’t a kettle or coffee making facilities in the room which I would have expected for the price. However the complementary drinks and snacks in the fridge was a nice touch! I wouldn’t recommend the breakfast as there was little choice and over priced for what it was. The overall design of the hotel is really chic funky and I would definitely stay again. The location is only a few stops on the metro from the centre of Amsterdam. I would book the room again just for the bathtub and view!!

Unfortunately this building has a problem with mice. At first we thought maybe it was a one off - we discovered one mouse in our 3rd floor bedroom overnight. There are clear signs to not take food into your room, but I am sure many guests do, and we were in a studio room with a kitchen so I imagine that many guests will have lots of food for cooking in their rooms. We were able to move rooms for the 2nd night after the mouse, but later we saw another mouse in the hotel bar on the ground floor. When we spoke to staff about this one, they said that they often see them and it's hard to control because of the basement bar and there being a lot of food storage around. They acknowledged it was a problem but didn't seem to think there would ever be a solution. They said there is already someone coming in weekly to do pest control, but obviously it isn't 100%. Very unhygienic in both the rooms and the bar where food and drink were being served. Secondly, we were disappointed that we couldn't make use of the spa at all during our stay because of the weather - be aware that as it is outside it will close and you will not be able to access it if the weather is bad. This of course makes sense, but it was a shame for us.

I highly recommend the Volkshotel! We booked two rooms - one suite with a full kitchen/dining room, a sleeper sofa, and a queen bed in a loft. The second room was a sleeper cabin with a shared bathroom. The suite was amazing. Very comfortable bed and plenty of room. We also enjoyed having a nice sized balcony. Nice to enjoy coffee in the morning on the balcony! The sleeper cabin worked fine for our daughter and her boyfriend. It is very small, but they spent plenty of time in our suite. The hotel decor is eclectic and interesting. Very large lobby area, with cool decor. Breakfast area in the lobby was very nice. Hot tubs up on the roof which we enjoyed one evening. Very fun. The staff was wonderful. Very helpful and friendly. Be prepared to walk (or bike) a lot. 20-25 minute walk to the museums and to Dam square. But the area around the hotel is safe, clean, and beautiful to walk around. We would definitely stay here again!
