Evora is a town that should definitely be visited on any trip to Portugal, and the Evora Olive Hotel is a superb place to make your base when you do. It is new and sleekly modern but with an appreciation for elegance in design, as shown by its Guggenheim-esque sweeping spiral staircase leading upstairs. It is just inside the city's 17th century walls on the south side of the city and is easily reachable within a couple of turns on comfortably wide streets once you're within the walls. The parking garage is spacious and doesn't involve an overly steep ramp or challenging curves or ramp approaches.

From the moment you arrive at the front desk, you'll encounter a staff of fluent English speakers who bring real intelligence to taking care of you. My room was attractive and comfortable, with an large bed and a good writing desk. Breakfast was extensive, good, and filling, and while I didn't eat dinner there, that is an option and I heard it was very good. There is a rooftop terrace with an expansive view looking uphill towards the cathedral. And once you're here, between the hotel's location and Evora's small size, you won't need to get your car out again until you leave or decide to make an excursion to someplace nearby (like Vila Vicosa or Estremoz). You're within a 10-minute walk to the square with the Temple of Diana and less than that to the Franciscan church with the Chapel of Bones or the Praca de Giraldo, which is effectively the town's main square. And all of this for $90 a night, in my case. Looking back, I only wish that I'd given Evora and the Evora Olive hotel a second night in my itinerary!

We spent 2 nights here arriving by train and a short taxi ride from the train station. The Taxi only accepted cash which I did not have. I expected the driver would receive payment by credit card. So, my first encounter with the receptionist was to charge the fare to our room and provide currency for the driver. The receptionist telephoned the manager whom did not accept this arrangement. However, Antonio the receptionist went above and beyond in service by giving me 5 euros for tip and fair of his own money. I was so impressed by the gesture of this staff but not the management. I repaid Antonio with in minutes of finding an ATM machine and gave him double the amount he lended me. Another impressionable staff was Nelson whom treated us with exquisite service at the bar and at dinner. He deserved and received a direct tip that he wouldn’t have received if given through management. Management might want to take note of these performers as quality staff that reflects on the hotel service in a positive way. For breakfast the staff was indifferent and unenthusiastic. The higher end rooms here are large enough with sparse decor and furniture. The floor is exposed grey concrete with no rug or tile coverings. It looks like it is still unfinished construction when contrasted with the pleasant marble bathroom walls. Good environment control with proper AC, fan, heat function. Bright room with large windows and window coverings that has an option for blocking the strong sun. The facility has both inside and outside small pools with recliners. The restaurant and bar is suitable for wine, cocktails, and reasonably valued food options. The location is walking distance to main tourist attractions in this small town.

An incongruously modern hotel near the centre of the old town but it works very well. Our room was generously proportioned the bed comfortable the shower terrific. On arrival there were few of the usual facilities you would expect missing like tea making facilities in the room but these were quickly provided once we asked for them. In addition there were some facilities closed due to the Covid situation such as the spa facilities and limited access to the indoor pool . Breakfast was also adversely affected by Covid safety arrangements the heavy screen between between guests and serving staff made breakfast quite a stressful experience with a lot of shouting at each other. We made alternative arrangements after two mornings of this. But apart from this all staff were very friendly and helpful and polite. There’s a nice outdoor pool and sun lounge area and the free underground parking is a real bonus. We would stay here again a great base for exploring the Alentejo region.

The Olive hotel is an example of how a great facility can be ruined by incompetence and inflexibility. I arrived at the hotel around 11 am On a train from Lisbon and while I was not expecting the room to be ready, I sort of did because it was low season and there was hardly anyone in town and in the hotel. I had considered staying at the local Ibis but was intrigued by the styled and design of the hotel. The reception staff was so inflexible and rude while pretending to be professional that it was infuriating. I returned to the hotel around 2:30 pm now surely hoping to check in and get a room at this hour but no! It was the same thing (not ready) and now few more sad travelers were congregating and waiting. Same story: Room is ready at 3:00pm not a minute before! Along with other silly and inexplicable rules, like wearing shower shoes and caps to the “pool” (who travels with pool caps?!) and breakfast being 10 euros the day before and 12 if you order breakfast the day off, this hotel left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. A beautiful facility ran by inflexible and unhelpful staff who are most likely enforcing management rules that are the opposite of hospitality. I should have stayed somewhere else. The design of the hotel and the room (I stayed in room 228) were impressive. Poured concrete polished floors and light Scandinavian wood accents. The main staircase is reminiscent of Oscar Nyemeyer’s style and the blue carpet in the hallways was a nice touch. On principle I didn’t take breakfast based on the silly (petty)10 vs 12 euros rule and I found the bar prices inexplicably high. this inflexibility and lack of basic hospitality lost revenue to the hotel, I am sure I am not the only one, but I didn’t want to spend any money in the restaurants or bar or room service because of the check in debacle. I actually preferred to walk In the rain on the night of the 30th of January to go have dinner somewhere else rather than drop 30-40euros at the hotel, I spent that at Pousada Convento Evora and did not regret it. Should have been nice to just stay in!

Rooms were a little worse for wear despite the modern looking appearance on their website - walls need repainting, have marks from luggage running across the room. Beds very comfortable. Despite saying a number of times that we were celebrating birthdays no gesture made. Even further it seems they host tour groups and the rooms with city views / balcony were allocated so we got an interior courtyard view. As others have said you can hear every conversation - thankfully we were able to sleep with windows closed. House keeping efficient, reception courteous and pleasant however the breakfast staff, at least one lady in particular seemed keener on avoiding customers and being quite curt which was disappointing.

Overall despite the great location and parking, it was not the experience we had hoped for.

This hotel was easy to find and included secure parking. Our welcome was pleasant with lots of information about their covid safe status. The room was very comfortable and clean. The toiletries available were minimal so take your own. The breakfast buffet was Covid style so served by the staff from behind glass. We had to choose everything we wanted in one visit (big queue behind us) so we each had a tray with our coffee, fruit, boiled egg and bacon. The boiled egg and bacon were cold. This was the only downside to our stay. Would not include breakfast again (during covid).

The staff is very kind and helpful.
The location is good within the walls.
The room was big but very steril. Not a rug or something on the walls. No equipment to make a cup of tea tea or coffee but there where a small fridge to put your water bottle.
It was very clean but the windows had not been cleaned for months.
We stayed two nights and they missed a few things cleaning like changing glasses and bringing new extra sheets. Everything was fixed after contacting the reception but it would of course have been better if you hadn't needed that at all.
There is glass between the bathroom and bedroom so it's impossible to get light in the bathroom without lighting the bedroom at night. We also had a funny lamp that turned itself on in the middle of the night.
The breakfast had all the basics except bacon :).
Overall impression was OK. Not cosy or tip top but ok. The bed was comfortable being Portugal and it was quiet.

Dear Anna-Carin T, thank you for sharing your thoughts about your stay at Evora Olive Hotel. We're sorry that you didn't like the concept of our hotel's design which is supposed to be minimal, reflecting the pleasure of lightness during summer/hot times. We're also sorry for anything else you had found inadequate and/or uncomfortable. We believe that the housekeeping missed some changes in your room, but you did right to ask us to fix it. Not all of our rooms have that glass, and we will look into that funny lamp you mention! We find it odd that bacon was missing in our breakfast! Maybe we were out of stock! Sorry for that also... Our team sends their best regards

We had a standard room, 2nd floor. New, modern, included refrigerator and underground parking. Our room was too small when unpacking, but OK once we were settled.Fine if you travel light!!?) Shower was strong and hot! Breakfast was adequate. I found the room to be too barren and mattress was like sleeping on a box spring!! Perhaps due to Covid, there were only paper cups in the room, with one 50ml water/day. Definitely consider more than the standard size room.
Crazy closet unit with only 3/4 doors openable. (See photo to be amazed)

This 4 stars hotel located in the main centre of Evora has a very beautiful design. A lot of wood furniture and an amazing design of the stairs that connects to the different floors of the hotel. It also has a great view of the city from the terrace and it has a small interior swimming pool.
The rooms are great, with a big bed and simple design.
The breakfast is served in the main floor and you will enjoy a wide variety of food, great Alentejo smoked sausages and sweet pastries. They also have scrambled eggs and pancakes that you can order and they will cook it for you. The breakfast is fine! The only bad experience about the hotel was the staff of the breakfast, not oriented to customers and a bit arrogant.

I stayed for 3 nights. The location is very good. Almost a stone's throw from the Chapel of Bones and just a short walk to Praça do Giraldo. The facilities are extremely good, with free, secure underground parking, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a very pleasant patio between the bar and the pool, which has seating and sun loungers. Also the staff were very professional and very pleasant. However, the bedroom lacked basic facilities which are expected in a 4 star hotel. There was no coffee or tea making facilities, no tissues, no note pad and pen or pencil and no shoe horn. Also there were no slippers, which as the floor was cold, would have been very welcome. I raised the point with a young lady on duty in reception and she informed me that those facilities are not provided, with the exception of slippers which she could give me if I wanted. Being slightly annoyed I declined the offer and went into the town and bought slippers and tissues. That said, the bed was comfortable and large - It being 2 single beds fastened together. There was little space between the end of the bed and the wall, so the rooms are not large. The shower was excellent, with an overhead shower and a hand held spray shower. The bathroom and WC were clean.
