We stayed in the villa across the street for 10 days and LOVED EVERYTHING! It was far more than just a comfortable and beautiful place to stay. It was a genuine part of our awesome experience in Sao Miguel! Atmospheric courtyard that hosts a nightly group dinner with variety of themes. Best place to spend an evening drinking delicious sangria, eating good quality food, and having fun and inspiring conversations with the people who visit and/or work here from all over the world. (Highly recommend Bbq Sunday and make your own pizza Friday!) Breakfast was always delicious, professionally prepared and served. It is obvious that the owner and all the staff take great pride in this special place. There are even impressive art displays of photographs and paintings by artists who share a connection to "Out of the Blue".
It is a great location to walk anywhere in the beautiful city of Ponta Delgada, gardens, parks, and museums. Everywhere something unique to photograph, from street art, to the marina, and the historic architecture. Can't imagine a better place to spend your time and money! We WILL be back!

Room Tip: Private villa allowed us privacy while still sharing the benefits of the main hostel.

This might been the best hostel I have ever stayed in so far. It was a hostel with hotel quality, amazing stuff and excellent location. We stayed first nights in a private room and after exploring the other islands we came back to the same place but stayed in their villa (right next to the hostel). I just loved the breakfast there and they also organize dinner every night with different theme. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was relaxed and open. There were not that many people because of the low season but just enough to meet new people from all around the world. I will definitely go back there the next time I will visit Azores and Ponta Delgada. The only minus was the toilet in the private room which did not have a door.

I stayed at this property for one night solo. I booked a private room with an outside bathroom. The room was great and the bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was really nice but it was kind of a pain to have to lock and unlock the bathroom with a key. If they changed to a keycard it would have made it a bit easier. The bathroom was also stocked with very nice products-shampoo, conditioner, body lotion. The wifi worked well and the breakfast was very nice and had tons of stuff. They also seemed to be very accommodating of people with dietary concerns. I did one tour and one pizza night and they both were awesome. There's a bar/restaurant next door and you can order stuff to eat/drink in the fabulous garden. The garden is spacious and a highlight. There are ducks!! All in all I highly recommend this hostel which is more luxury than the prior hotel I stayed in. Also more expensive.

Stayed here for 3 nights, and it was one of the best hostels I've stayed at in terms of amenities and friendliness of staff. The free breakfast is the BEST hostel breakfast I've had the pleasure of being treated to.

The staff is quite friendly and very helpful, and everyone speaks fluent English so it was very easy to communicate seeing as I know no Portuguese.

The backyard/garden area is a great spot to relax or have a meal with new friends made at the hostel. There is ample seating, and a raised garden area with hammocks and comfortable seating both communal or private if you are looking for a quiet place to relax.

I highly recommend the hostel-offered tours, Lidia was the tour guide while I was there and she is extremely friendly and knowledgable about anything you might ask about Sao Miguel Island or the surrounding areas.

The dorm room is fairly basic, however the rooms are large so you don't feel crowded and the beds were quite comfortable.

You get a complimentary towel to use during your stay, and the showers were stocked with shampoo or soap which was a nice touch. It is clear the owners and staff put thought into all the small details that tend to be overlooked at hostels, and I would recommend staying here to backpackers, digital nomads, or anyone hoping to have a good experience in the Azores Islands!

Few hostels could ever compete with Out of The Blue for its hospitality, amenities, and atmosphere. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful and did everything they could to make sure my stay was amazing. When my flight was delayed, I texted ahead and let them know, and they assured me that someone would be able to help me when I arrived. Laundry is very affordable, and they change your sheets daily. If you leave before the scheduled breakfast, let them know and they set out a little "early bird breakfast" to make sure you have something to eat before you leave. Mornings in the courtyard are spent meeting new friends and enjoying a homemade breakfast. I cannot recommend Out of The Blue enough!!!

The hostel is not only beautiful it is also clean and well kept. The rooms are spacious with plenty of storage space and clean, comfortable bed. (Stayed in a 6 person room). The personal is not only helpful and always at hand, they are also kind and personable.
The complementary breakfast is delicous and was served in their beautiful garden. In those gardens they also offer dinner service which is always well cooked and in good company.
I adored my stay and met a ton of great people. Definitely a great lodging choice.

Nice place to stay but some points may be improved.
We stayed at “Out of the Blue” for three nights. We liked the friendly and very helpful staff, the delicious and every morning changing breakfast, the garden and the style of the hostel and the rooms. You can meet many young people there and because you have dinner and breakfast at one big table in the garden it is inevitable to get to know each other (you can also sit at two separate, small tables if you want to eat alone). It is a 5-10 minutes walk to the harbor of Ponta Delgada.

However, we give only 4 out of 5 because of two things mainly:
1. We had a double room with the possibility to enter the garden. So basically we had one door to the garden and one door to the floor of the hostel. Although the glass door to the garden lead to proper noise protection from chatting and so on coming from the garden, the door to the floor was kind of non-existent with regard to noises coming from the inside of the hostel. This, we did not get much sleep.
2. The toilet and the bedroom are in the same room without any separation. I think this problem should be easy to solve, because the toilet is in a corner but has not yet handled with obviously.

In total: a good Place to stay and if you are alone and want to stay in a dorm to meet other travelers, it is probably 5 out of 5.

It’s one of the best if not the best hostel I’ve ever been to.
The staff was super nice and helpfull, they solve all my needs!
The hostel itself its an antique house restored very tastefully.
The garden its so calm, you feel like If you were in the middle of the jungle but without the mosquitos ;)
Breakfast amazing (toasts, yougurt, pancakes, juice, coffee...)
And they offer the possibility to join the dinners, cooked by an incredible and nice chef, who puts all his love in each meal he cooks. That is an excellent opportunity to meet other host and have fun!
It's true that the wooden floors are a little bit nosey but what do you expect form an traditional all house... In that time they didn't have sound proof floors...
Very much recommendable!!

Out of the blue is a must do on Saõ Miguel! The hotel is amazing, with rooms that are spacious and beautifully renovated. The staff is extremely nice, welcoming, thoughtful and helpful. We spent three wonderful nights there and wished we booked longer. The breakfast was also very good, if you stay a few nights you will notice changes from one day to the next.
It was a wonderful experience. Thank you to the out of the blue team!

The hostel was welcoming & everyone was kind. The daily breakfast offerings are delicious! Every day we had the option of hot tea, juice, espresso, yogurt, fresh bread with spreads, pancakes & an egg dish. We didn’t have any food restrictions but they were accommodating to others.
The cleaning staff did a fantastic job every day straightening our rooms and the shared bathrooms.
The garden is idyllic with ducks hanging about and plenty of unique places to hang out.
