Detailed Reviews
I came straight from the incredible youth hostel in Calheta, so it was a bit a culture shock. The, what some here call a historical, building is really old style. The hallways are noisy like hell, the bathrooms look like an army bunck and the whole place looks like you went a few generations back in time. Combined with a full house, you go a bit nuts...
I had my own room (they were not the most flexible to change my travel mate from dorm to my room), and it was apart from the noise ok. I had an ocean view (and not also town, but an ugly parking lot), bed was ok, electricity sockets enough.
You get a typical portuguese breakfast like anyware else, WiFi is only available in the common room, the kitchen is sometimes available and booking tours really expensive.
I did not find staff that friendly but I Guess it was a though day.
The dorm rooms my travel mate slept in are quiet cramped. All rooms share the same bathroom in the hallways. Gives a camp feeling really.
The garden outside is really nice btw. The location in general is ok, not superb but comes with enjoyable walk. Enough places in the vicinity to eat or drink.
Honestly, I stayed for the same price in another hostel in PD and that waw waaaaaaaay better. But if you look for a camp spot or desperatly need a room, here is your place.

The rooms and very old and you wake up early because of the noise and sunlight. The curtains do not cover the Windows!! The Breakfast is a joke... You have to buy ham and cheese, because you only get butter and jam

We were here at the end of March and the temperature outside in Ponta Delgada was around 16. The temperature inside the hostel seemed much cooler than outside. The first night I slept with four quilts to keep me warm enough. In the morning there was no hot water. We mentioned this to the staff and they told us to be more patient as there was not many people in the hostel we needed to let it run for 5 mins to get warm. We let it run for 10 and it was still ice cold! The second morning it was luke warm but you could not get out of the shower fast enough as was still so cold when you combined the low air temperature with barely warm water.
The rooms were clean and comfortable though the hostel seemed to be fighting a losing battle with damp and mould. I expect they cannot do much about this as such an old building. We were disappointed to find that the advertised kitchen was closed in low season - my friend's budget was based on self-catering so this was stressful as we had to pay for meals out in town instead which we were not prepared for. The staff were very nice and efficient.
Overall I would say this hostel is good value but I would not recommend it in the off season as far too cold and not all the advertised amenities were available. A friend of ours got a hotel in town in low season for the same price we were paying and it had heating!!

This hostel is part of the Hostelling International (Portuguese Pousada da Juventude network) and is certainly the cheapest way to spend a comfortable (to budget standards, of course!) night in Ponta Delgada. [It was the cheapest part of my whole trip in fact!] It is located toward the back of the city and up the hill a bit. Such a location yielded a perfect view from my 4-bed dormitory window -- the city spread out down to the port below and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. It is also located next to the pretty Jardim António Borges/public gardens. The building itself is an idyllic former church or monastery framed with hydrangea bushes with a newer back wing for more guests. The ex-monastery effect creates charming hallways and reading nooks. The price includes a simple but plentiful breakfast of bread, cereal, coffee, milk, juice... Clean and peaceful with a helpful staff. Overall a very pleasant experience!

+1
We wanted to stay at this hostel for some nights in January, but already at the entrance we felt a little bit unsure if this will meet our expectations concerning a normal stay at youth hostel. It did not. We did not expect something extraordinary, but this was far below standard.
Besides the unfriendly staff, the rooms were dirty and a fusty smell came up as we entered the room.
The walls were full of moulding blobs, ants were running through the room and the walls began to crumble.
The shared bathroom was old, but at least clean!
All in all, we did not feel welcomed in this hostel, so we changed to another hotel.
I definitely would NOT recommend this YHA!

I believe the hostel is part of HI (Hosteling International).
This place was very easy to find! Right next to the Antonio Borges Garden where there is a very tall tree making it easy to locate the hostel from far away in town. the parking was free.
Our party (2 f in early 30's) stayed at this hostel in June. The location was very convenient. After over 1 week of camping around the island, we were planning to rest at the hostel for a day but we liked it so much that ended up staying there for the remaining of our stay.
Our (4 pers. dorm) room was very nice and clean. The restrooms and shower area were large enough to accommodate large groups, and very clean as well.
It was a pleasure every morning to get to the sunshiny cafeteria area and grab some great breakfast (fresh bread, juice, cereals, etc).
While I am used to hostels with a kitchen area, in this particular hostel, we had to ask for a key to a very small kitchenette at the back of the building in order to cook our food or even eat during lunch or diner hours. Since the hostel was far from crowded, we had no problem getting the key at all times.
A very quiet place, felt quite safe too. It reminded me of a convent!
I would definitely recommend this place.

They are so many other nice places to go then here! It is very old and the bathrooms are not really clean. There is not a nice atmoshpere at all, but thats because its so big... the staff at the reception is nice though. We just choose this because everything was already full. But i wouldnt advice it at all..

The rooms very nasty, bathrooms were dirty and furthermore the wifi does not arrive in the room.
The common room is nice.
I would not recommend it because it was not a good experience.
The position was good

We were 15 young people staying at this place for a week, and of course for small money you cannot expect very much, so that is why my rating is average. You pay small money and you get what you pay for. First of all the staff are very nice and friendly, excellent service, the house looks gorgeous, good location etc. There is nothing to complain about really. I really liked my stay there and I slept well.
But when you pay little money there is always minor issues that does not really matter much, but still is a part of the whole stay. Like lightbulbs not working in the common bathroom, the showers does not function properly, the soap dispenser above the wash basin was out of soap for a week, some of the rooms did not have lightbulbs on all the lights....
The breakfast is just bread with jam, and you can buy extra eggs etc for small money- make sure you book a day in advance. There is only one computer with internet, and no wireless yet- which is a major drawback in a place where young people would be staying..
But still I would gladly go there again.

Location is convenient, and the nearby gardens are very cool. The hostel itself is in pretty poor condition. The bathroom was dirty, with only 2 functioning showers. The motion-activated light was broken, and required me to jump and slap the unit to get any light at night. The rooms were fine, typical hostel rooms. Hordes (literally 40+) 14-15 year olds were there for some sort of school or camp trip (I guess this is the "youth" in "youth hostel") and were super loud and took over most common spaces. Meals very basic. WiFi was functional. Staff sometimes hard to find (usually smoking outside).
