Good place to stay! This was booked through a travel deal, so we didn't really "choose" this place, however we were very happy staying here. Room was clean, easy to find. You can park on the street or in a small lot very close by off of the street. It was a good home base for all of the adventure that we had on the island! We stayed in the bullfinch room, only complaint was that the shower head was very low and you had to hold it while showering (then trying to avoid touching the really long hose), and there was no shelf in the shower to put anything. The washer and dryer were small but worked - washer was slightly moldy (fairly expected with communal spaces) and the dryer took a really long time to dry clothing, but it worked. Overall, I would recommend staying here, and would definitely consider staying again if we are back on the island in the future!

Joanna and Catia were wonderful hosts and helped us with great recommendations for the area. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the Lodge was a nice walking distance to the downtown areas. I left my phone in a taxi, and thought it was lost, but Joanna and Catia were able to get it back for me, certainly saving my vacation! Looking forward to returning soon!

We stayed here, too, as part of a travel deal, and we enjoyed our stay. Everything was clean and we enjoyed having a fridge for our leftovers. The bathroom leaves something to be desired as more ventilation would rid it of the musty smell. However, we loved the location and would stay again.

For our last night thought it would be a good idea to stay closer to the PDL airport. This property is a good plan for nimble younger clientele. The property has a pool, but no air conditioning. It is a hostel with self service everything. The property is about a mile from downtown. Room access requires climbing flights of stairs and therefore heavier luggage can be difficult. Check in instructions required a call even though I completed the check information in advance. Had I known been aware of these items I would have chosen another property more suitable to our situation

Miguel & Rita are the most welcoming hosts. Lovely people. They are more than happy to arrange excursions & transport for you as well as recommending great places to eat & drink. the Lodge is billed as a hostel but this doesn't really describe what's on offer. Can you think of any other hostel where they have a private floodlit swimming pool? Some rooms do have shared facilities but we had a 3 bed room with en suite facilities. walk-in shower, balcony & direct access to the pool & garden. Rooms cleaned & replenished every day. Shared kitchen, lounge & dining facilities where you can store & cook you own food if you so wish. Handy at least having the fridges to store wine & beer. A washing machine & drying area also also available. Free internet. About 15 minutes walk to the centre of Ponta Delgada but there are cafes & restaurants nearby. Only 10 minutes from the airport but still within the town. Price is incredible too given what you would pay for a similar standard on mainland Europe. I would recommend without hesitation to anyone heading to the Azores & it will be our first & only choice when we return. Fabulous.

We stayed at the hostel for 2 nights. We had 3 rooms for our large group, but there was only one other guest staying there so it was hardly crowded. This is a great concept- a hostel where you get your own room. The location is perfect; an easy 10 minute walk to the downtown tourist district. There is a small convenience store for breakfast food about 2 minutes walk from the hotel, but it's only open 8:30 AM - 7:30 PM so plan ahead. Since we were there at low season and arrived an hour before our scheduled time, there was nobody at the hostel upon arrival and we had to call a few phone numbers to find Miguel. The rooms are really nicely decorated. However, I had a few complaints. The first is noise: planes literally pass about 200 feet above the hostel (this affects everywhere in Ponta Delgada, not just this hostel), so it can be noisy. Also, there were roosters crowing in the morning and dogs barking. If you're not used to this noise, it could bother you. With earplugs, I slept very well. Secondly, there is no soundproofing between the rooms, so we could hear our neighbors snoring through the walls. Also, there are little things in the bathroom that could be improved. For example, the soap dispenser is bolted to wall above the sink, so you don't have soap in the shower. Shampoo isn't provided, although Miguel provided some shampoo for us upon request. I discussed all of the points above with Miguel, and he sounds like he understands the issues and already has a plan to address them next month, as he will be closed for a few weeks for renovations that will deal with these issues. Based on his acknowledgment of the issues and his plan, I give this four stars. As it stands today, it would be more like three stars.

We traveled around Sao Miguel for about 12 days and stayed at three places, but this one took the crown. We were received very warmly by Rita and Miguel, who had a map prepared of Ponta Delgada with lots of places of interest marked (including some very nice 'local' restaurants). Both were very helpful throughout the stay as well.

The place is a mix of a hostel and apartment, as you don't share toilet or shower, but there is a big shared kitchen and a nice living area with tv. The two things that stood out besides the friendly hosts were the big swimming pool (with very comfortable temperature) and the inspired design of the entire building. Miguel told me that before he became a host, he was an architect, and it shows. From the wooden floor in the showers (amazing grip, I'm stealing this idea) to the murals in the rooms to the room keyrings (the rooms are themed, we had 'turtle').

More than comfortable, this place was a discovery. Couldn't recommend it more.

Since the hotels on Sao Miguel are stuck in the 80s and 90s at the same time being quite expensive, we decided to stay at the Azorean Urban Lodge, a "hostel", which actually made us feel like we spent almost a week in a superior hotel. We had a private room with private bathroom of high quality and modern design. Everything was cleaned every day. The pool, terrace, kitchen to prepare dinners and breakfasts, and common rooms provided everything or even more than we needed or expected. Since the Azorean Urban Lodge is relatively small for a hostel, it offers a good feeling of privacy and we were able to relax and fully enjoy our time without being confronted with many party people or the like. So we would even recommend this place for middle-aged or older travelers.
Finally, the hosts, Miguel and Rita, need to be especially mentioned and honored. Their warm, happy and helpful personality is outstanding. We have never felt so welcome in any hotel or hostel before. They made our trip unforgettable and we are so thankful for their knowledge and priceless advice regarding their island.
We will be back hopefully sooner than later!

Aspects were great about this stay - and other aspects have room for improvement.

Pros:
- Hosts are extremely kind, helpful, and accessible for assistance
- The map they have put together of the city and restaurants, local finds, etc. is an amazing touch and was a huge help!
- The back patio/pool area was beautiful to relax in
- Spacious rooms
- Private bathroom and daily cleaning
- Spacious kitchen/eating/lounge space
- Personal food drawers in kitchen area for each room
- Beautiful architecture and design

Cons:
- Street noise is very loud if your room is on the street-side
- Private bathroom is outside of the room
- No mirror in the room
- Room was not thoroughly cleaned and had a lot of evident dust in areas that had not been cleaned for a while
- Loud keys that you have to use to leave and enter your room (not ideal for in the middle of the night bathroom breaks)
- Kitchen only had 1-2 cleaning clothes that everyone was sharing
- A longer walk than expected into town but still a nice walk :)
- Evident that aspects of the property were becoming run down or not up kept to expectation....i.e. pool area had uneven wood floors falling a part that could have been a hazard, dirty chairs, cob webs, and weeds. Such a beautiful space, but needs some more proactive love!

All that being said, I would definitely consider staying here again, but would also like to see some more improvements in the areas mentioned.

We stayed here for 5 nights in July and would highly recommend the Azorean Urban Lodge to anyone staying in the area. The Lodge is a mix between a hostel and hotel with a kitchen area for guests to prepare food and breakfast if they wish. The owner Miguel couldn't have been any more helpful with a huge range of recommendations around the whole island provided by him and it appeared that no request was too much for him. The pool offered a welcome relief from the humid climate.

We stayed in a private room with bathroom and the room was large as well as cleaned daily. Our room was on the top floor and without air conditioning did get a little warm at times but it was mitigated easily enough with a fan.

The Lodge is a short walk into town and we would definitely stay here again if ever back in Ponta Delgada.
