We loved this gorgeous old palace, located in the Alfama district with a view of the water, and a garden balcony. The service was warm and welcoming, our room a fantastic mix of old and modern, and the breakfast was the best we had in Portugal. We wish we could have stayed for a month.

My husband and I stayed here the nights leading up to and of our Wedding and it was perfect! This hotel was like a fairytale-the building, the decor, the unique rooms, the location. Not to mention the decadent daily breakfast! But the service is really next level. Everyone was so amazing and friendly and went above and beyond to make our...

The place is out of this world. If you like beauty and a small hotel, with fantastic service, clean and in the best location, this is the place for you. Not even the photos do justice to the wonderful place this is. Romantic, cozy, special...

We loved our stay- everything was great but the best part was Magda and crew- wish we could have taken the staff out with us at night. Such nice and friendly people and treated us like friends. We got the penthouse suite which was bigger than my entire NYC apartment and really funky/cool decorations. Also came with our own private...

We lived a few blocks from this charming boutique hotel. On certain evenings they allow outside guests to eat or drink. We took them up on it. It's a former home of a Portuguese merchant that was turned into a hotel. The staff are hospitable and helpful. The wine and small dishes we ordered in the lounge area was just...

This is small boutique hotel in the Alfama district. The interior is decorated in late 19th century style and feels comfortably luxurious. The staff are extremely attentive and helpful. The breakfast was lovely, full of fresh local produce. Our suite included 2 balconies with sweeping views over the Alfama, with space to lounge and dine. The hotel is centrally located...

My wife and I enjoyed an amazing brunch on our first anniversary. The service and food were both five star. Definitely recommend Chafariz D'el Rei to anyone looking for a beautiful and tranquil place to eat and enjoy great views.

I was tempted not to review this little gem because I wanted to keep it quiet, but the secret is already out. Look, this is not the finest hotel in terms of being plush with all the bells and whistles, but it is seriously breathtaking to stay at if you want a traditional Portuguese building with outstanding personal service, the...

The hotel is lovely, but very difficult to find. We gave our taxi driver the address provided by the hotel, but he was unable to find it and we had to go walking, carrying our luggage up the steep, narrow cobblestone streets to find the front door. We were welcomed warmly by the woman in the reception, but then told...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
