Lisbon, for the uninitiated is a series of steep hills, providing spectacular views and interest around every corner. Casa Balthazar is situated directly off the main shopping and eating area of central Lisbon. Admittedly its up a steep set of stairs (with cherry liqueur in a chocolate shot - refill free for a total of 1.65 euros at the bottom)... More

My husband and I stayed here 1 night after a red eye from the U.S. We left for Cascais the next day. Was hoping to get an early check in, but that didn't happen. The staff was pleasant and spoke English. We dropped our bags off and explored the area. This hotel was very central to Russia square, restaurants, shopping,... More

We stayed in the Chalet Suite at Casa Balthazar for two nights and loved every minute. We are in good physical shape and didn’t mind the hilly location and many steps (typical of all of Lisbon). In fact we felt less guilty eating the wonderful breakfast from the national bakery Confeitaria Nacional that was served in our room. Still in... More

Perfect! We are so glad we chose Casa Balthazar for our stay in Lisbon. The staff was wonderful. They booked a nice restaurant near by for our first evening. We stayed in a beautiful and comfortable private apartment. We had a private roof top terrace with amazing views on the city. The house is owned by the owner of Pasteis... More

Had a roof loft suite in this boutique hotel - with a bedroom, small lounge area, kitchen and bathroom. Breakfast is provided in the room and includes bread and pastries from the Confeitaria Nacional (whose initial owner, Balthazar, used to live in this converted house). Great views over the city and good location, near to the Rossio station - but... More

Reserve your room far in advance if you want a room with a terrace and view! And that is definitely worth it—the view is a fabulous—but stay here anyway even if you don’t get a room with a view. We stayed in the Cottage Suite, a room with no view. It was great, had all the benefits of Casa Balthazar... More

We were really looking forward to staying here on our honeymoon but were unable to visit after receiving very scary news. We postponed our trip as my father had a heart attack the day we were flying from the US to Lisbon. I let them know the circumstances and they still charged us for the entire stay. My recommendation is... More

Despite our 4 (recent) days in Lisbon being mainly wet and rainy (after Lisbon's mini heatwave before our arrival) we could not fault the accommodation and welcoming efficiency of all the staff at this B & B. Casa Balthazar is well situated and offers quiet and comfortable surroundings. If it matches your budget do not look elsewhere

We booked Casa Balthazar based on all of the wonderful reviews and are sure glad we did! It's an impeccably kept property in one of Lisbon's best neighborhoods. Our room was beautiful, spacious and we even had a private little outdoor seating area. The breakfast (delivered to your room each morning) was delicious. My only complaint was that we had... More

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
