Solar de Castelo was a great place to stay. Clean, comfortable and in the heart of the historic district in Lisbon. Our host, David, was very welcoming and helpful with directions and recommendations. I would highly recommend this place and would definitely stay there again.

We spent four lovely nights at the Solar Do Costolo. We had a challenging cab ride in from the airport but found such peace when we arrived ( hint: be sure your cab is using the meter) our room was very nice and clean. We loved the mix of old and new in the architecture and appointments. The staff was...

We wanted a weekend away in the sunlight before the long winter, and had never been to Lisbon before. This hotel was a highpoint of our stay. It's true that it's up a steep hill, but that's because it's in the historic centre, actually built into the side wall of the medieval castle. It's a beautifully designed hotel, modern but...

Before arrival I emailed the hotel for directions and Anna provided detailed travel information for taking the trains/trams. We did not realize until we left that a taxi would have been almost the same price and would drop us off at the hotel entrance. The hotel is located up by the Castle which is extremely difficult to get to with...

Dear Guest, Thank you for letting us know your opinion about your stay. Whilst we are happy that you found lovely both our hotel and our staff, we are disappointed that this was not the ideal location for you. Indeed we are located at the top of the old quarter of Alfama within the little and picturesque castle village. In...

What a beautiful hotel in a beautiful city. Staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. View from our balcony was over the secluded courtyard and the castle grounds. Breakfast was varied for all tastes. An honesty bar in the lounge. Decor modern and traditional at the same time. Easy access to everything in the city....

Nestled in the castle walls, Solar Do Castelo was an ideal base for a city break in Lisbon - you are sight seeing from the moment you wake up! All the staff were extremely helpful (24 hour room service), and those on reception spoke fluent French, Spanish and English as well as Portugese. There is a nicely furnished, spacious communal...

A wonderful location, next to the castle and the surrounding community. It appeared to be located in one of the better areas of Lisbon and the hotel itself was wonderful, small and personal, rather corporate. A beautiful courtyard, lounge and very comfortable bedrooms, all contributed to a relaxing stay.

The hotel is deceptive and sits quietly in one of the narrow streets behind the castle. Once you open the blue door a small courtyard and friendly welcome awaits. The reception staff were excellent and did everything possible to ensure we had a great stay. In the lounge coffee is always available along with fruit and other nibbles. Our room...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
