At 70 and 72 years of age, I got nervous when we arrived, but found it very easy to navigate down the steepe cobblestones to go into the city. The hotel is quaint, modern additions, so very clean, spotless bath, just everything you hope the hotel is when you book. They have a lovely garden, with a fountain, lounge chairs... More

From the moment we walked through the unassuming blue door we loved this quiet charming hotel. It is beautifuly decorated and the decor compliments the lovely courtyard. The rooms are reasonably spacious, all different and individual . The staff do all they can to make you feel welcome. We loved the buffet breakfast which finishes at 12 which is ideal... More

We came to Lisbon for a special wedding anniversary, and chose Solar Do Castelo as it sounded central and quiet. It was both those things, and so much more. The building is full of character, with a tiled courtyard in which guests breakfast, or sit / lie with a drink in the afternoon. Sometimes a peacock hops over from the... More

Solar Do Castelo is a quaint, very friendly and clean hotel. It is situated at the top of the hill within the walls of the castle. Right at the top of narrow, cobbled streets in the lively castle area. The hotel staff are friendly ,efficient and helpful. Breakfast is lovely, either on the court yard or dining room. The hotel... I really can't fault this hotel. It is a peaceful haven situated right next to the castle grounds, but away from the crowds. We visited the castle early in the morning, it was so beautiful wandering around the grounds and the ramparts before the crowds arrived. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful and friendly, and we had... More

This hotel is so beautiful that it feels magical. It is a mix of new and old. The new architecture mixed with the old castle kitchen was stunning. The courtyard and lobby are so lovely, you just want to relax in them and soak it all up. The rooms are spacious, well-appointed, and lovely. Okay, so enough about the stunning... More

Excellent, distinguished accommodations in a treasured site next to, almost adjoining the Castela Sao Jorge. There were peacocks resting on the rooftop as we looked out the window of our room. All staff were very kind, helpful and multilingual. We came as part of the Heritage Hotel system. Other hotels in this group were also very pleasant. Thank you! to... More

We had a little trouble finding this gem of a hotel but once we did, we realized it was worth the trouble! This boutique hotel is a little oasis in an area that is saturated with tourists. We were exhausted when we arrived but were greeted with two glasses and a bottle of port. What a lovely welcome...The staff was... More

Every evening, before my candle-lit bath, while enjoying a complimentary glass of Port wine, after a long day exploring the sights, tastes AND HILLS of Lisbon, I'd enjoy the solitude of the lobby after midnight while relaxing deep in thought on the couch... I'd play the tape of my day back in my mind, look around at the tasteful decor... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
