Perfect location. Rui was delightful, charming and helpful. The apt. was equipped with every amenity possible. A true home away from home. This was not a hotel, but a quaint, three-room apartment with a porch.

We stayed there in November 2014 and had a wonderful weekend. The hosts are very welcoming and helpful offering superb freshly brewed coffee for breakfast. The view is picture perfect. Cosy rooms and beautiful terrace for breakfast. Nice and quiet neighborhood. Ideal for couples. It takes a lot of steps to get up to the hotel, so it's probably not... More

Beautiful home in a great location, just a few meters below St Jorge castle. This is the best location I believe to visit Lisbon. Very kind and helpfull owner. Breakfast is very good and with fresh products. I strongly recommend this place.

I fell in love with this guesthouse. Joao is a gorgeous host, very kind and helpful and the views from my room over the city and river were incredible. I was attending a conference in the Parque de Nacoes and found it perfect to walk my way back up the hill from the metro in the Baixa below after long... More

At least that's how I felt, from the moment I inquired via email, to the moment I walked out the front door at the end of three days. The proprietor here, Joao, cold not be more accommodating. Very easy to do business with via email prior to the trip, and immediately upon arrival. I showed up at an early hour,... More

We were looking for a peacefull, clean, well located room with a view. During a 3 nights stay, we enjoyed the style and the sustaining breakfast. At the hottest time of august, in the evening, we always got back via some of the "escadinhas" right up to Costa do Castelo. Has become one of our favourites.

We stayed here a couple of years ago during summer and had a lovely time. Joao, the owner, is always very friendly and helpful. The hostel is located just below the Castelo de Sao Jorge in a nice old building with thick walls, so if you close the window shutters during the day, temperature will be optimal for sleep at... As mentioned by other reviewers, this guesthouse is located on the top 2 floors of an old residential building but if you're OK with climbing stairs, this is a terrific place to stay. The entry to the building is dark but you quickly climb through and up to the top where you enter a light and clean space. The Guesthouse... More

We spent 3 nights in this great little guesthouse. It's like staying in a typical Portuguese home. There are only four guest rooms on the fourth floor of an old apartment building just beneath the castle. The owner lives next door and is very helpful. Excellent room and facilities - very clean and comfortable. Great breakfast in a quaint dining... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
