The Bairro Alto Hotel stands out for its prime location that guests love, situated conveniently for exploring the city's offerings, and its atmosphere, which many find stylish and inviting. While travelers often appreciate the hotel's cleanliness and the thoughtful amenities, such as quality dining and a terrace breakfast with views, some guests have called out the rooms for being on the smaller side and occasionally noisy, and warn that the value may not match the cost due to pricey extras. Despite this, the service receives high marks for staff professionalism and attentiveness.

Great hotel centrally located in Biarro Alto, Lisbon. Room was great. We had the Classic Treo which was spacious for a couple. Our room happened to be overlooking a small side street so it was very quiet. Though I don’t know for sure, I would guess the rooms overlooking the plaza and Main Street might be a bit louder. We ate our breakfasts (all included in room price) at the Bahr, which is their onsite restaurant. We also wanted a casual dinner after a long day and had a bottle of wine and great food in the Lookout Terrace bar. Awesome view and vibe. My only suggestion is that they be a bit more consistent in the timing of room cleaning and turn down service. This was sort of all over the place during our4 nights. Once we mentioned something to the front desk, problem solved. Very attentive staff and great property. Would return!!!

We spent months researching our trip to Portugal and Lisbon offered a number of great hotels, so it what difficult to choose! In the end, we selected the Bairro Alto Hotel and were so glad we did. The hotel is in a very central location with easy access to tours, great restaurants and places of interest. Our arrival was delayed for 10+ hours due to flight re-routes and we had not slept in nearly 36 hours by the time we got the hotel. Adding frustration was delayed luggage. Needless to say, we were tired and grumpy upon arrival, but the delightful front desk staff welcomed us with warm smiles and one member of the team even waited outside to help us locate the hotel arrival area since we were driving and having trouble figuring it out. We were treated to a sample of Ginja upon checkin (perhaps they could tell we needed a drink?!) and promptly shown to our room. We requested a corner room at the time of reservation and found our room overlooking the Camões Square to be perfectly charming and cozy. The high ceilings allowed the high windows to fill the space with great light and we enjoyed the fresh air. Fresh baked treats awaited and the room had all the amenities we could ask for. During our 5-night stay we enjoyed amazing views from the rooftop bar, dined at the restaurant (BAHR) for dinner and the outdoor space for breakfast multiple times - all of these spots offer incredible views of the Tagus River. We even enjoyed the coffee bar off the lobby. Requests for extra pillows and iron/ironing board were promptly honored, valet service was prompt, and the front desk even helped us get a reservation at a restaurant out of town. Attention to detail and desire to make sure guests are happy and comfortable were notable… never have I stayed in a hotel that actually has a pillow guide card from which you can order a variety of pillows! Despite its location in the busy Bairro Alto area, the rooms are quiet… even our 2nd floor room with 2 windows was quiet when the windows were closed… which was a good thing as people make use of the square until early morning hours. We would love to have had a higher room in the same spot to minimize the noise from the square when the windows were open. We found the hotel to be modern, clean, centrally located and “boutique” in vibe with highly personalized and obsessively friendly service. HIGHLY recommend!

Location is fabulous for proximity to restaurants, nearby entertainment and shops but the room and bathroom were just way too small and cluttered for my comfort during our 3 night stay, especially given the price. The bathroom is poorly designed for anyone who needs counter space or has difficulty climbing into and out of a shower. The key to access the room was tricky to use and required several attempts in order to open the door. And in fact, I even accidentally opened the door to the wrong room with my key.

The night we arrived and in need of a light bite, we went to the rooftop which had lovely views and ambiance but the menu was very limited and I could not find a single item to order. Breakfast, however, was pleasant with many choices that worked for me.

If having a fitness center is important, this is not your hotel. The room can hold no more than 3 people comfortably. Lobby area is also small and not conducive for hanging out, though the staff working behind the reception desk were professional and courteous.

Overall, a nice hotel but space is a priority for me.

I was extremely impressed with the Bairro Alto Hotel. They seem to have fine turned every aspect of the hotel experience. Firstly, the hotel staff are very warm and friendly, and they are efficient without seeming rushed. No request was too small or unwelcome, and they went out of their way to give us the room we wanted during our return stay. The hotel premises are beautiful, and the view from the restaurant and roof top bar second to none. The bedrooms are on the small side which is common in Europe, but not too small, and I loved the LeLabo bathroom products and the really great shower water pressure. The hotel location is fantastic...easy walking distance to all of Bairro Alta and surrounding neighborhoods...loved overlooking the square and being able to catch the Tram No. 28 right outside the hotel. The al la carte breakfasts are great, and the view from the restaurant patio superb. Yes, the rooftop bar boasts a world class view, but there is so much else about the hotel that makes it shine. I would highly recommend the Bairro Alto Hotel and I will definitely return for another stay.

My wife and I spent four days at this hotel while visiting Lisbon last week. Simply put, it was one of the finest hotels we have ever stayed at anywhere in the world. Our suite was ideal in every way: spacious, comfortable, charming and full of small thoughtful touches that truly separates this hotel from others. The bathroom was large and had dual sinks and also had a stall shower with rainfall shower head and a large bathtub. Flavored waters, fresh fruit, pastries, candies, cherry liqueur, and flowers were delivered to room each day. Though our suite faced the busy square, it was very quiet and we never heard traffic noise.

The staff is gracious and welcoming. Our concierge set us up with private tour guides and made reservations for dining and fado shows. The location of the hotel is perfect, in easy walking distance from many, many restaurants and a few minutes from the great shopping of Chiado and Bairro Alto, The Bahr restaurant on the fifth floor served wonderful drinks and food and the rooftop restaurant was the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast overlooking the Tagus River.

We had high expectations and Bairro Alto Hotel exceeded them in every way.

Set in a noisy square, this boutique hotel in a refurbished building has its charms including 2 small rooftop areas, however it is not worthy of a 5 Stars. (Leading Hotels and CNT, both of which gave it top ratings years back, should consider visiting/reevaluating.)
We had two rooms, one was sold as a more spacious corner room, both were miniscule. In the larger corner room, there was not more than an arms distance between the edge of the bed and the tiny bathroom whose wood door was so badly warped, it would not close.
The rooms keys didn't work well, we had laughs with other equally frustrated guests that we needed engineering degrees to stay in this hotel. Between the faulty door locks and the light switches inside the room with similar mechanical flaws, it was something of a comedy in the micro-halls of the hotel, which feels more like an old home, as we struggled together to try to open them. Many of the staff members (seemingly interns/students) were very kind, but lacked experience and could not answer basic questions about the city, hotel menus, we received an apology note in our room one evening that was addressed to another guest, etc. Others were downright rude and not accommodating. (Mr Texiera at the front desk especially.)
The hotel's restaurant menus code its vegan/vegetarian dishes, which is critical in a City with a meat and shellfish-based cuisine, however in some cases incorrectly. Thankfully a well informed waiter was able to advise. There are so many wonderful places to stay in Lisbon, if you are looking for either luxury or value, the Barrio Alto has neither.

I am forever in search of the perfect hotel. I think I have finally found it. The problem is how to share my thoughts without writing an entire book. Well, here goes. First, the building is in impeccable shape and absolutely everything has been thought of down to the very last detail (think electric currents, heated towel racks, lighted closets and miles of storage space, two sets of double French doors that are doubly glazed). The professional staff continues this stunning pursuit of excellence. They are both highly professional, yet engagingly familiar, warm and sincere. I have never felt so at home in a hotel and never have felt such personal warmth and care.

What stands out? Everything!!

Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the Tagus River as it begins to open up to the coast is brilliant. Totally, a la carte and with complete free range of the menu, you have the pleasure of satisfying your every whim. Cannot say enough about the cuisine, but will review that separately.

Suzanne Kaufmann bath and beauty products are some of the best (and most expensive) in the world and I am so happy to be introduced to this new brand. My hair and skin have never felt so smooth

The spa and work out room are small, but well equipped. The massages are excellent. Please enjoy, the sensory shower, the sauna and the Technogym apparatuses. I used the area every day, but never saw anyone else there except the delightful staff.

The staff could not be more accommodating. The concierge will perform miracles for you and the restaurant service is impeccable. The housekeeping staff even polished my reading and sunglasses and left a cleaning cloth neatly tucked in beneath (Who does that?). Every night there was a gift on my pillow and it was never a piece of chocolate thank the Lord. It was usually some natural product created to assist one with digestion or to sleep peacefully.

I could live here forever. My four nights were divine. Lucky for me after three nights in Evora, I am returning to the Barrio Alto Hotel. Can't wait.

The hotel deserves its 5 stars in terms of service and quality of services. The rooms are not huge but very comfortable and very well kept. The food, breakfast and meals, is very good. The concierge knows how to advise on restaurants in the area… certainly the price is accordingly but justified.
The only criticism would be that the rooms have little view of the surrounding area and no balcony.
Overall a very good stay in a lively area.

Very nice hotel - reception and all services very good. No teabags in the room (just nespresso capsules) so asked for Earl Grey teabags - was given two "free" but was left a handwritten card to say thereafter they would charge 4 euros per bag!! decided against requesting any! Given the price of the hotel and the restaurant, which we used whilst there, its a shame they feel the need to overcharge for something as inexpensive as teabags.

A beautiful hotel and amazing experience in Lisbon. My partner and I loved staying here and will certainly be recommending it to friends and family. It immediately became clear to us just how thoughtful and detail-oriented the hotel staff is. Our room had every amenity and item we would possibly need during our stay, and more - they left extra bathroom toiletries for us and we didn't even have to ask. They made sure the towel warmer stayed on during the rainy days. They even left vitamins in our room after hearing me talk about the stomach issues I was having. We dined at the restaurant for dinner, and for breakfast on multiple occasions, plus had drinks on the rooftop, and the service was impeccable. We felt special and luxurious throughout our stay, and after long days of exploring the city and walking around, it was a great feeling to be able to come back to a gorgeous hotel, a cozy room, and the wonderful "mezzanine" area near the lobby coffee shop! Brilliant. Thank you to the BAH staff for making our stay so incredible. We already can't wait to come back.
