Welcome to Hotel Convento do Salvador. Located in the heart of Alfama, one of Lisbon's most legendary neighbourhoods, the Hotel is just steps away from the city's main tourist attractions: St. George's Castle, Sé Cathedral, traditional bars and restaurants, Fado houses, down-town Lisbon and Praça de Comércio, museums, belvederes, the famous no. 28 tram which passes right outside the door of the Hotel. Hotel Convento do Salvador is an innovative socio-economic project which sets out to support the cultural activities of the Centro Convento do Salvador, geared towards children and youths, and operating in the same building. The services offered by the Hotel, namely the organisation of meetings and events, are a result of a liaison with this Youth Centre, which has different types of venues and equipment at its disposal. A display of artworks by some of the most renowned Portuguese contemporary artists may be viewed throughout the Hotel, in both common and private areas.

Neighbourhood
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.

We had a river view room which really should have been described as "glimpses not views" but that said it did not detract from the comfort of the room. The standard of cleanliness was excellent and the bed very comfy. The breakfast was very good and tasty but what made it extra special was having it outside in the courtyard. Also I would mention the staff, in our experience they were all very attentive, some speaking many languages and all helpful, friendly and eager to help.

We spent 3 nights at the Hotel Convento do Salvador after staying 7 nights in Porto. We were assigned room 2 Q, which we discovered was designated for impaired mobility. I was confused, but thought, well, it's 3 days. However, when I tried to shower, the hand held device flew out of its holder & hit the top of my foot. My husband is 6'2" & the shower apparatus was positioned about waist high. I went down to ask for a room change. The agent went to the back office & then said that the hotel was full. When I told her about my foot & I hated the room, she went back to the office & returned with a document in Portuguese. Towards the bottom, in small print, was a list of (I guess) requested items in a row, the last being the "mobility impaired". I do not remember that document at all in English. When I checked my reservation confirmation document, it did not mention anything about a mobility impaired room. Besides the cost, number of nights, and standard room, the space for "requests" had my only request that we preferred a double bed over single, if possible. But it was the way that the agent handled this. When she emerged from the back office with the document, she just pointed to it. No attempt to communicate. Just point. Ok, after the next day, I got over it. It's only 3 days. On our last day, we went out in the morning, returned after noon, & turned the sign to do not disturb while we rested. When we returned at 4:00, the room was unmade. I forgot to turn it back the other way when we left the second time. No worries, I told my husband. We just need clean towels. I went to the front desk & told the agent that I didn't turn the door sign to "clean room", so we only needed clean towels, just the towels. Now,I think most folks would say, "no problem" , but this man looked at me coldly & then said, "wait here" & disappeared into the back office. After some minutes of waiting (why?), he emerged without towels. Instead he said, "You didn't have the door sign turned to clean..." I was taken aback. What was the point of saying that when I already "confessed" that I didn't do it but only wanted towels. He instructed me to go back to my room & he would bring them up. I waited again & by the time he arrived with the towels, I felt angry & I told him so. Actually, the whole episode was humiliating. Problems happen & that's normal. The way things were handled made the difference between good and bad customer service. In this case, it was bad.

It does not look like a 3-star hotel. The room had a great size, with slippers and bathrobes, was super clean, and the breakfast was really good! The staff was attentive too. Extra points for the amazing view of the room.

We received a warm welcome from the reception staff in this excellent and stylish hotel and in fact all the staff that we came into contact with were all very helpful. We stayed for five nights in a room with a river view. It was spotlessly clean (and kept that way), comfortable and sufficiently spacious for our stay. Decor is Scandi style with cool grey and white colours. An excellent base for exploring Alfama and Lisbon being about a ten minute stroll into central Lisbon. In our opinion much deserved five stars.

Don’t rent a car if you’re staying in the Alfama District, the streets are narrow and navigation difficult and parking is for residents. The hotel front entrance is not obvious but after finding it once easy to find a again. The lobby is very welcoming with a modern decor, the rooms are small but modern, well appointed and make great use of space. They have a nice buffet breakfast included and a very relaxing courtyard. It is well located next to the trams and lots of restaurants, a great place to walk around and explore from. Reasonably priced and I would stay there again. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

From the airport the best way would be a taxi (aprox. 12 euros). Most taxis will know where it is, ask them to drop you off in front of the hotel, not at top of street. Bear in mind that If you call in the taxi it will cost you a bit extra than just stopping on from the street (1 or 2 euros) and if you have many bags that will cost you extra too (again, 1 or 2 euros extra, not too much).

We started our Portugal roadtrip from Lisbon. Flew into Lisbon, a few days there, and then picked up the rental car from Avis. I think there’s plenty of rental car companies near the city center. Or have a cab drop you off the the rental company, taxi’s aren’t too expensive in Lisbon. Navigating Lisbon is fine, as long as you’re used to inner city driving. Portuguese drive fast, so don’t hog the left lane for too long unless you can keep up with them, but they aren’t as rude or “arrogant” as drivers in, say, drivers in France for example, so you should be fine. Have a great trip!
