Tripadvisor gives a Travellers’ Choice award to accommodations, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers and are ranked within the top 10% of properties on Tripadvisor.
This hotel is the jewel in the crown of PortoBay Hotels & Resorts. Being located high on a natural promontory ensures genuine tranquility and well-being. Its direct access to the sea, the Il Gallo d’Oro restaurant with its 2 Michelin stars and the gardens with their numerous hidden corners and ancient palm trees complete the picture with a magnificent view over the bay of Funchal. In 2021 the hotel was refurbished, in an extensive renovation that included the rooms, reception, lobby and the 2 Michelin starred Il Gallo d'Oro restaurant.
Star ratings are intended to indicate the general level of features, amenities, and services to expect. This property is classified according to Giata.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.

Nothing is too much trouble when you stay here. The staff in all areas and departments are totally guest focussed. The location is unique and spectacular. The facilities available are comprehensive and first class. Everywhere is spotlessly clean and well organised and well appointed. Fresh local flowers enhance common areas and the gardens and outside areas are immaculate and filled with local flora and fauna.
Reception and concierge staff could not be more efficient, helpful and friendly. The restaurant and bar staff will constantly impress you with the speed and quality of their service. The housekeeping staff constantly and consistently cast their magic every day on your suite, bedroom and bathroom. Basically, everything works well.
For me as a frequent and regular visitor the things that I really value and enjoy include the location’s proximity to Funchal et environs, the welcoming staff, the Cliff Bar, sardines for lunch in the Blue Lagoon, breakfast al fresco in either restaurant.
On arrival my first beer in the Cliff Bar, listening to local musicians whilst looking over the manicured garden to the blue Atlantic, being served by familiar friends is an experience I cherish and treasure all year around.

Our stay at CliffBay was very pleasant, we rested very well and recharged our batteries. This elegant and refined hotel is very well located, you can reach the center of Funchal on foot in 15 minutes. Upon arrival we were welcomed by a team who took care of us and we had this feeling throughout the stay with each service. Nothing is left to chance, our request for a room on the same floor and far from the stairs/elevators was respected, we were side by side. We appreciated the cleanliness of the rooms of course but also throughout the hotel and it smells good everywhere! We had superior double rooms, in addition to a magnificent sea view, this included very appreciable services including access to breakfast in the calm and cozy Il Gallo d'oro restaurant, as well as little extras in the room (eg. No surcharge for refilling water and fruit juice from the mini bar). We did not eat at the 2 Michelin star hotel, our family stay simply did not lend itself to it, but we took advantage of the one at the swimming pool which is served until 6 p.m., the choice of menu is perfect, every day is offered a different local fish. Access to the sea is permanently monitored, the swimming pool is calm and its sea water is all the more pleasant in the event of a red flag which prohibits swimming in the sea (only 3 times in 12 days) The spa treatments, massages and reflexology sessions were of good quality, and very reasonable prices for a hotel of this category. Near the hotel our son was able to do activities (jet ski, scooter rental, etc.) I can only recommend this hotel, we will come back for a winter stay with friends. Thanks again to all the staff.

We just spent two weeks at the Cliff Bay for our honeymoon and what a hotel it is. On check in, we were greeted with a glass of sparkling wine. Unfortunately there was no room upgrade, which we were advised was an option for honeymooners where available. We were however given a room with two stunning balconies, one to the side with a view of Funchal and one to the front with a sea view, and sparkling wine, chocolates and flowers in the room.
Bedroom was nice with a very comfortable bed, especially once we upgraded our pillows to firmer ones. The only issue we had was it wasn't very sound proof and we could regularly hear doors closing on the corridor and noise from the room next door. The water was refreshed every day and the housekeeping were thorough attending to the room multiple times a day. Unfortunately our mini bar was not complimentary.
The bathroom was lovely and clean, with his and hers sinks, a shower & separate bath and a bidet. Only criticism of the bathroom is the shower door opens both ways and opens inwards when you're using the shower, and the shower could use a shelf for toiletries rather than having to put these on the floor. I imagine for older guests this would be difficult.
Breakfast had a variety of cooked and continental options, the highlight for us was the omelette making section where a chef cooks these fresh for you. We also loved being able to sit outside with a view of the sea.
The hotel offers two separate pool areas, one connected to the spa and one next to the sea, as well as sea access monitored by a lifeguard. One change we would suggest is making one of the pool areas adults only for guests wanting to separate and relax away from kids playing.
The inside spa area was beautiful and we found this was a great escape from the busyness of other areas in the hotel. It has a chemotherapy shower, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, and there are a variety of beauty and spa treatments available. I had a massage which was just perfect.
The location of this hotel is the highlight for us. It is situated right on the seafront with amazing views, we loved watching the boats go by. It is out of the hustle and bustle due to being down a hill, but there's a huge variety of bars and restaurants in walking distance and the Old Town is only about 30 minutes walk too.
All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful; a special shoutout to the ladies on reception the day my husband fractured his elbow. They were great at advising us of the best hospital to attend, providing ice packs, and even phoning the room to check if we needed anything. We were able to request a slightly later checkout time of 2pm due to our flight being later in the day which was nice.
Overall, we loved our time at The Cliff Bay and would love to return in the future.

I have been at the Hotel Cliff Bay for the past four nights and it has been awesome in so many ways. I will begin with the location of this establishment, which from the name indicates that it is nicely perched on one of Funchal’s amazing cliff sides overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Even though it is not right in the centre of town, it is only a 20-minute walk away (an enjoyable 20-minute walk). Due to its location the Hotel has amazing views of both the ocean and the bay of Funchal.
Next is the cuisine at the various restaurants at the hotel. Now I didn’t get to dine in every restaurant but I was fortunate to dine at the Blue Lagoon and Avista Ásia, and both were exceptional. If you appreciate fresh produce, light distinct flavors, and exquisite wines and cocktails, then look no further. A highlight for my wife and I was the premium breakfast we had on our private balcony; everything was delicious and excellently presented.
Speaking of private balcony, our room was an upper floor superior room with views of the bay of Funchal. Room size was big, terrace space was well over 10 sqm, and the bathroom was almost as spacious as the room itself. Water and fruit juices were on the house and a lovely chocolate cake along with a bottle of champagne (celebrating my wife’s 40th birthday) awaited us upon check-in.
Last and definitely not the least, are the hotel staff; they are the gem of this establishment. They are so polite and professional, and are always on the beat. They also stayed very attentive without being intrusive while meeting our every need. The response time from housekeeping and room service was just exceptional and consistently so. I just genuinely feel that the staff are the backbone of this hotel, and will continue to be so.
Only niggle will be the pillows. They need to change these immediately as they hold no form whatsoever. Apart from this very very minor issue, I cannot point to any fault. Can’t wait to return and maybe next time book the Suites (Les Suites) which looks like a considerable step up from the main hotel.

This is, without doubt an amazing hotel. We were lucky enough to stay here for a week & I'm not surprised most of the other guests were returning customers. (We will be too!) The hotel accommodation was excellent, & all the hotel staff we had contact with were very efficient & friendly. Just what you need. Our room was a twin with sea & bay view, & a balcony, which we used most evenings. It was stunning to wake up & see the view every morning, & again in the evening while sitting out, enjoying a drink before going to bed. The breakfast selection was excellent, with something for everyone. The lady who cooks the eggs is a long standing member of staff, I noticed her being treated like an old friend by regular visitors. She is lovely, & my morning request of poached egg was always delivered with a smile. We stayed in one evening to listen to the jazz group who were very entertaining, & on the Sunday afternoon, while we had afternoon tea, we were entertainined by a lovely female singer & musician. I used the pool three times, usually in the evening when it was quiet, & it was lovely. The changing rooms, etc, were always spotless. Definitely a hotel that puts the customer at the heart of its operation, & it felt so good to be spoilt. The hotel is quite a walk from the town centre, but the bus stop is at the top of the road the hotel is on, (on the main road,) so it's easy to get in & out of the town. We walked into town, or took a taxi using the Bolt app, & used the bus or taxi for our return. Next time I think we'll get a bus ticket for the week, & save our legs! If you want a beautiful hotel room, with staff who put customer service highest on the list, stay here. You will not be disappointed.

We had a 10 day stay at the Cliff Bay in June and their reviews are well deserved. Check-in was very quick and friendly and we felt welcomed from the outset. There is a wide selection of choices at breakfast and it was wonderful sitting outside eating breakfast to start the day. Housekeeping was exceptional throughout our visit and the room was cleaned/beds made early each day with a turn down service in the evening that you could opt our of if you wanted. All staff were friendly and helpful - for example when we were going out one evening and it looked like rain later we were asked if we wanted to borrow an umbrella. We tended to eat out in the evening with a wide selection of excellent restaurants within walking distance (if reasonably fit). Grounds are small but colourful and well maintained. There is a spa and gym and the facilities throughout are well maintained. There was also a table tennis table and pool table. We looked up the days that the cruise ships were due to dock in Funchal and chose to enjoy the calm retreat of the hotel on those days. Clientele was (dare I say) slightly older than average but this just added to a peaceful stay. The journey to and from the airport was under 30 minute. I can fully understand why so many people return.

Absolutely stunning place, the location is fabulous. From the moment you walk in the place just feels fantastic, with large and beautifully decorated public areas. As others have said the staff are wonderful, welcoming, helpful and friendly, nothing is too much trouble. The attention to detail is outstanding, to the extent that the flowers on our balcony were regularly weeded and dead headed. Always plenty of space by the pools. Great food and service at all the restaurants, we ate at Avista, Cliff Bar, Rose Garden and Gallo D’Oro. Gallo D’Oro is pricey, but unique and offers an unrivalled experience. Avista probably offers best value for money - great food, wine and cocktails. Plenty of local restaurants to choose from in very easy walking distance as well. We had a junior suite, which had wonderful views over Funchal and was a really spacious and comfortable room.
Never felt so relaxed so quickly on holiday - we will be coming back
Finally, one picky point, the coffee served in Cliff Bar and Rose Garden needs improving, as an espresso drinker it lacked body and kick

The Cliff Bay is probably the best 5-star hotel we have stayed at, after over 30 years of holidaying around Europe, the US and further afield. I suppose what makes it so good is a combination of wonderful friendly service, spotless and modern accommodation, excellent weather and high quality food. We all expect friendly service when you go on holiday but it seems the lovely Portuguese staff have it in spades at the Cliff Bay. This is the third time we've been and when you learn that many of the staff have worked there for years then you know the Cliff Bay treats its staff and hence its customers very well. Of course, the weather is great in Madeira all year round and there's a nice breeze off the sea. It seems to be a habit everywhere that people book their loungers with towels early morning, we never had a problem when we went down later. So, take your time. Plenty of great spots all over the hotel.
With 5 different restaurants on site (you can find them on the website) there's plenty of choice, but I'd recommend you book in advance of your trip. On this visit we missed out on one of the restaurants because we waited until we arrived at the hotel before we booked. Also, if you want to eat at the Rose Garden every evening then you're good with the half-board option. But, if like us, you prefer variety then you'll be better with the B&B rate.

Once again a most amazing experience. This is our third time there and as in the past can’t fault it. From checking in to checking out it’s the perfect holiday. The staff in all areas are brilliant and in particular the staff round the lower pool area are great. We stayed in a superior sea view room this time on the 7th floor having previously stayed on the 4th. The view from this higher floor is amazing and the additional touches such as soft drinks in room and the Michelin restaurant for breakfast were great. However having stayed in the lower rooms I think these are actually better appointed. There is a large three drawer chest that is the in lower that had been removed in this room so all clothes had to go in the wardrobe and the position of the shelves meant that it was quite difficult to put in and take out clothes especially on the higher shelves, I struggled so anyone with mobility problems would have found it very hard. The bathrooms are amazing with beautiful walk in shower and great hair and shower products provided. We could sit on our balcony on an evening listening to music it was perfect. We also made use of the happy hour most evenings and the drinks were fabulous. The breakfasts in the Michelin restaurant were great and it was lovely to be served food though the view from the Rose Garden takes some beating. The only disappointment was that for several mornings they didn’t have tables set up outside. I appreciate that there had been some rain overnight and it had been windy however the Rose Garden was open outside so this was a little confusing and disappointing as part of my holiday is to sit outside. Our second week in particular the pool area was extremely busy but staff would always go out of the way to find you beds and an umbrella. The only thing I would say is if you go for lunch at the restaurant overlooking the pool leave something on your towels. As we took our bag with us and whilst we were having lunch watched the staff remove our towels and close the umbrella ultimately losing our beds. Appreciate they have no way of knowing if beds have been left so leave something ( that won’t get blown away ) on your bed when you leave for lunch. This hotel is one of the best I have stayed at and can’t wait to return. Would highly recommend anyone to stay here. Sea view rooms for me are the best

Dear Guest, Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that your third stay with us was just as amazing as your previous visits. It’s fantastic to know that our staff made you feel welcome from check-in to check-out, and that you enjoyed the superior sea view room and the Michelin restaurant for breakfast. We appreciate your feedback regarding the room’s layout and storage. It’s important for us to provide comfort and convenience to all our guests, and we’ll certainly take your comments into consideration for future improvements. We’re also glad you enjoyed the pool area, happy hour, and the overall ambiance. We apologize for the outdoor breakfast seating situation; we’ll look into how we can improve consistency in offering outdoor tables whenever possible. Your tip about keeping something on the sunbeds to avoid them being cleared is very helpful for other guests—thank you for that! We look forward to welcoming you back for another perfect holiday, and we’re thrilled to be your favorite choice. Kind regards, The Cliff Bay team

However hard I try, I cannot find anything to complain about. This is a wonderful hotel. Its location is perfect, it has the most helpful staff without exception, excellent facilities, and beautiful grounds.
This was our third stay at this hotel: once thirty years ago, when sadly it rained for almost our entire stay, and even then, the facilities at the hotel were sufficient to make it tolerable. However, our experience of the weather kept us away from Madeira for a while. When we did return, we could not understand why we had been away for so long.
The hotel had expanded and probably been refurbished many times since then, and we were warmly welcomed. From our arrival to our departure, the staff were warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Even some of my wife's stranger excesses (details of which I shall withhold) were accommodated.
Although there is a wide range of restaurants and bars, we generally only ate in the hotel at breakfast, which, with a choice of three locations each with its own style, was always excellent. I can't really comment on the other meals served, but they have a good reputation, to say the least. The location is such that many of Funchal's great restaurants are a maximum of a 15 minute stroll from the hotel.
Our room was clean and spacious, with a balcony overlooking the garden and the sea. We felt that we wanted for nothing, and found that the hotel policy was not to keep trying to upsell, but instead, whatever they could do, seemed to be their pleasure.
I cannot recommend this hotel more highly.
