The Barceló Funchal Oldtown hotel garners high praise for its professional service, stylish interiors, and a wealth of amenities, including a stunning rooftop pool and diverse breakfast options. While its central location is lauded for proximity to attractions, some guests have called out noise disruption as a downside. The modern rooms are generally well-received, though occasional complaints arise regarding lighting and noise. The hotel's cleanliness stands out, yet it receives mixed reviews on value, with some concerns about hidden costs.

I am absolutely in love with the hotel’s decor and room furnishings. The lounge area at reception is stunning as well.

I was fortunate to be give a room with balcony on the fourth floor, with a side view of the houses stacked on the mountain valley and a little view of the ocean. I can never forget this beautiful scene.

The room is spacious! Adequate space for luggage and toiletries, all amenities are there. The room smelled heavenly and the towels are so big and nice. Bed is wide and very comfy, we have options to choose the type of pillow - that is a good hotel service. I loved to cosy up in my hotel room everyday after a full day out and chill on the nice arm chair, or looking at the views from balcony.

Service at front desk is top notch, they are excellent in their job and friendly. The service at the pool bar is good too, I would say it’s a bit overpriced for cocktails but bartender knew what to recommend and was very friendly and approachable.

Noz restaurant served good food, but I agree they did neglected me for a longer time than accepted. The approach to wait for customers to pay their bills for 3 min while knowing I was waiting to be seated, doesn’t seem logical.

Hotel buffet breakfast was okay - serving the same food daily. Just wish there would be one or two varieties aside from the norm, like, soup of the day, or Tuesday special etc. But I really appreciate the egg station and Madeira fruits served there.

Location is central, few metres to farmers market, cable station, Blandy, CR museum (1km), and many food options nearby.

Oh and, reception gifted a box of chocolates when I arrived, that was a really nice gesture! Thank you.

But a few gripes here:
1. No tissues were provided
2. My laundry wasn’t delivered on time and as a result they had to ship to my country because I had to check out the next day morning.
3. Housecleaning was inconsistent; one day they didn’t clean the shower area, the other day they didn’t empty the dustbin
4. Amenities were not replenished - for example cotton wool and ear buds

I don’t find it noisy at night as late as 12am onwards. Just close the window tight shut and it’s all good, even when the summer festival was being held across the street.

Lovely comfortable hotel just steps from the front in one direction and the town in the other. Room was nicely laid out and the bathroom was gigantic, I even had space to put out my toiletries near the sink|
Breakfast was good with a wide choice of fruits and meats with eggs cooked to order but little choice in the cereals. All in all you didn't go hungry.
Only negative was our room was overlooking the street and restaurants below so it got a little noisy at times.
All staff were friendly and helpful when help or advice was needed.
Used the main restaurant just once during our stay as wanted to try more authentic local offerings though My wife did enjoy her meal there. It struck us that the menu offerings were just too fancy for most folk as all nearby restaurants were very busy whilst the staff at ours were twiddling their thumbs due to lack of customers.

Dear Guest, We appreciate that you took the time to share your experience with us. We regret to hear that the street noise detracted from the tranquility of your experience with us. Our central location in the heart of Funchal does offer the convenience of nearby attractions, but we understand that it can occasionally lead to some noise disturbances. However, we are pleased to note that you found the hotel's location to your liking and that the room provided you with comfort and a well-appointed layout. It is delightful to learn that the ample space in your bathroom added to your comfort during your stay. We also appreciate your positive remarks on our breakfast selection, even though you would have preferred a greater variety of cereals. Our staff takes pride in delivering friendly and helpful service, and we are glad this was evident throughout your visit. While you chose to explore local dining options, we hope that your singular experience at our restaurant was memorable. We are hoping to welcome you back in the future. All the best. Perfect location next door practically to the cathedral and adjacent to the ocean front.
In between two broad avenues filled with eateries and often live music. Perfect spot for the city and sight seeing.
As it’s is been recently renovated the room amenities are excellent. Showers really good and the bed and pillows are comfy.
Roof top facilities and pool all excellent.
The breakfast is truly awesome especially for a vegetation. Best meal of the day, given the lack of choice for veggies in Madeira/Portugal. (Soup soup boiled veg or soup)
Stuff in the room fridge is free - you only pay for any replacements you request!
(That includes beer, Toblerone, water and Pepsi.)

A case of a hotel which is very good in parts but unfortunately very poor in others. Location is excellent right in the old town and walking distance to many good eating places, bus routes, the harbour, shopping etc. If you are visiting Funchal and don't want to drive its perfect. Rooms are immaculate, beds comfortable, very spacious and ours at least was very quiet although we had requested a quiet room. Air con blessedly quiet also. Staff on night duty went out of their way to find me a quiet space to hold a very early meeting with some Aussie colleagues after the original plan did not work. Breakfast was a more mixed experience, the staff including the omelette chef were exceptionally helpful and choice, quality and quantity of food were excellent. But queuing for eggs, then queuing to make toast, then queuing to make one's own coffee in an exceptionally busy and cramped room did not feel like a 5 star experience, folks constantly walking back and forth with hot water is an accident waiting to happen its just far too busy. Neither did my partners experience on our day of departure. A later flight and the hotels inability to accommodate a late departure from our room which we completely understand was accompanied by the usual offer to continue to use the facilities including the rooftop pool. What was quite unacceptable was after my wife had done so in order to catch some last sunshine to discover the 'facilities' extended to a cold shower in the open at the side of the pool and an expectation she would change in a toilet cubicle. This situation was resolved only after my wife raised the issue with the staff at the pool side and they contacted the duty manager who then made a room available but should never have happened. A five star hotel should do much much better than this.

Great central location if you want to explore Funchal. Very clean, modern hotel ( a year old )with lovely, helpful staff. It has a very nice terrace for drinks and food at the front but the main bar inside is quite ordinary with unwelcoming lighting and we never saw anyone in there.
It is classed as five star but we would question the rating. We booked a junior suite which was quite spacious with a lovely bathroom/shower. However, the room was quite dark as the window/door opened onto the back of a ventilation unit which was a dark colour. There was a small seating area but there is no view and you have to look up to see the sky! The manager dealt with the issue very well and moved us to another junior suite on a higher floor which was lighter but with no balcony or view, but you could see the sky! The manager explained that there are no balconies in the hotel as it is surrounded by buildings. The wardrobe was also a challenge. It was comprised of sliding doors with the drawers in the middle section. The doors made opening the drawers very difficult as they kept sliding back. This was very frustrating.
The breakfast buffet is of a high standard with plenty of choice, eggs made to order, etc. The buffet area is very small so at busy times there was a lot of queuing and people bumping into each other. Coffee and tea is self service but the coffee machine ( a large Nespresso machine) is a nightmare. It often broke or it wasn’t clear how to use, queues formed and staff had to intervene often. There are far more sophisticated and easy to use machines and we would suggest the hotel replaces them. It didn’t make for a relaxing breakfast at time.
The roof terrace/bar is quite impressive with an infinity pool and good views to the sea and Funchal. However, there are three Balinese beds which you have to pay to use, a bit cheeky considering it is a ‘5*’ hotel.
All in all, it was a very pleasant stay and the staff are great. If we do stay again we would choose a standard room as these have slightly better views over the front and sides of the hotel but there is a noisy nighttime bar on one side so be careful!

Dear Guest, We appreciate that you took the time to share your experience with us. We're sincerely sorry to hear about the challenges you encountered with the room's natural lighting and the wardrobe design. While our unique architecture means that not all rooms come with balconies or views, we strive to create a comfortable ambiance in every space, and we appreciate your feedback on these aspects. We also regret the inconvenience caused during breakfast with the coffee machine and the buffet area's layout. Our goal is always to provide a seamless and enjoyable dining experience, and it appears we fell short of that. We are thrilled that you found our central location ideal for exploring Funchal and that the cleanliness and modernity of our hotel met your expectations. Your kind words about our staff are greatly appreciated; our team takes pride in offering attentive and friendly service. It's also delightful to hear that you enjoyed the high-quality breakfast buffet and were impressed with the rooftop terrace and infinity pool, which provide stunning views of the sea and cityscape. We are hoping to welcome you back in the future. All the best. Cristina Pérez, Directora General Barceló Funchal Oldtown

The hotel is in the perfect location in Funchal. In a popular pedestrian street but 1/2 block to the main Av Do Mar for all public transportation. Easy to walk around Funchal. Lots of restaurants and shops in the area. My room was large with a King Bed (ont he 1st floor facing the pedestrian street so it could be noisy but it’s quiet by about 10pm or so when the restaurants close). The shower was amazing (large and has a large rain shower)- perfect water temp even with my long showers. They have shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand wash and lotion available so you don’t have to bring. Large towels and robes offered. Large magnifying mirror with light also in bathroom. The bed is very comfortable and there was enough closet drawer space for one person. Large tv with plenty of channels. Wi-Fi was very good. The rooftop pool is lovely and they sometimes host events on the rooftop for guests which is a nice touch. Water in pool is warm with amazing views of the church and the water.
They emailed me after the first night to see if there was anything I needed. I requested a box of tissues and a shower cap and by the time I got home from my day trip both were in my room - should they have been there initially? Sure. But they quickly remedied the situation. Reception was helpful. I would absolutely stay here again

The location of this small hotel is perfect!! I have some mobility issues and this area of old town was so great. We had a small Juliet balcony right over the pedestrian walkway with views of the water. Large room and shower. We opted for the included breakfast. Very very large selection of hot and cold and made to order eggs. Breakfast staff so warm and helpful in any way you needed. Very much worth to include this option. The rooftop pool and bar had a lot of seating options and the views could not be better. If I had to find something negative. It would be that front end staff that we had did not explain some issues in room. Like two switches as you enter the room is for cleaning staff which we didn’t know how to use. The phone was not typical in room and had no idea how to use without asking . The size of the room is quite large and nicely laid out. But not many options for your clothes. We worked out of our suitcase due to lack of drawers . Also, for a 5 star hotel, I found it odd that they charged a fee if needed to weigh your luggage for airport weight restrictions. Having said all the above, I would not hesitate to stay here again. If we are able to return Barcelo will be our #1 choice

Dear Guest, We appreciate that you took the time to share your experience with us. We regret to hear that there were aspects of your stay that did not meet your expectations, specifically concerning the information provided by our front desk team. We understand the importance of clear communication and are reviewing our procedures to ensure that all guests are fully informed about our amenities and services upon arrival. Additionally, we recognize that sufficient storage options are vital for comfort and convenience. While our rooms are designed to maximize space and provide a modern aesthetic, we take your comments seriously and will consider them in our ongoing efforts to enhance guest satisfaction. A really nice hotel right in the centre of the old town, opposite the cathedral. Five minute walk to Blandys Wine Lodge, ten minutes to cable car and market, most buses stop on the nearby main road. A new, modern interior in an old building, with spotless rooms, big comfortable beds, a rooftop terrace, two lifts, and very helpful staff. There’s a superb buffet breakfast with everything you could wish for, and omelettes etc can be cooked to order. The big problem is noise if you are in one of the rooms towards the back along Rua da Alfandega. There is a club/bar next door (which ironically claims some eco credentials), that is open till 2am Tuesday-Thursday and 4am Friday and Saturday, with loud thumping music and a lot of noise from revellers in the street. We asked if we could be moved and the very professional staff arranged this without hesitation and we were given a much quieter room. The hotel seems well aware of this issue and we actually checked the club/bar Facebook page, there is obviously a fairly bitter dispute between them and the hotel about this. I hope something can be sorted out as it could have spoilt what was otherwise a very good experience.

Having booked the most awful apartment in Funchal we knew after just a few hours we had no choice but to leave. We arrived at the Barcelo disappointed, worried and desperate for comfort and hospitality. And that’s exactly what we found.

The staff went out of their way to get us booked in for the week. We were encouraged to download the Barcelo app so that we could take advantage of a discount and then given our room key.

The Barcelo is a stylish comfortable hotel with a small roof top infinity pool and bar. The breakfast was fabulous with lots of choice and the public areas smelt divine. The beds are magnificent and the bathrooms superb.

We did find restaurants in Funchal slightly disappointing therefore we ate a few times in the hotel restaurant. The food was great and the service friendly and fun. A few Madeiran dishes would have been an added bonus.

Since our trip we are considering visiting some other Barcelo group hotels.

Thank you for saving our holiday from disaster.

Stayed for for 4 nights. Easy check in and room ready early. Room (116) was quiet and comfortable. One small gripe was A/C was a little noisy if you had it on for a while, but nothing too bad. Room overlooks the front of the hotel and would benefit from a blackout blind for the street lights. Breakfast included which was good. There was a good selection of hot and cold breakfast items and a chef to cook eggs to order. Coffee machine was a little intimidating - as it was a Nespresso machine, it would have been good to have George Clooney to serve you!. Used the pool a few times. It’s OK, but the pool was not our reason for choosing this hotel, it was the central location, which was excellent. Didn’t have an evening meal here…there are plenty of places offering great food at very reasonable prices. Would return and would recommend for a short stay/break in Funchal

It's great to know that our breakfast selection met your expectations and that you appreciated the variety of hot and cold items, as well as the eggs cooked to order. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the air conditioning noise and the lack of a blackout blind in your room. Your feedback is important to us, and we will take it into consideration for future improvements. We are also glad that you were able to make use of our outdoor swimming pool during your stay, even though it was not the main reason for choosing our hotel. We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back on future occasions. Best regards, Cristina Pérez, Directora General Barceló Funchal Oldtown

The hotel website/social media page promoted the pool is heated, so I suspect it might be. If you email the hotel directly, they will respond.
