Nestled in a serene setting, Casa Velha do Palheiro Relais & Chateaux is celebrated for its tranquil and sophisticated atmosphere, with guests often noting the historical elegance and privacy that define the experience. The hotel's cleanliness is consistently lauded, with travelers impressed by the meticulously maintained rooms and facilities. While the spacious and tastefully decorated rooms are generally appreciated, a few guests have pointed out issues with noise and temperature control. The property's diverse amenities, including lush gardens, a comprehensive spa, and a golf course, receive high praise, although the indoor pool has room for improvement.
Service is mostly regarded as professional and attentive, but some have encountered inconsistencies. The hotel's seclusion and accessibility strike a balance that travelers appreciate, offering various activities and beautiful views. Opinions on value vary, with some questioning the price-to-service ratio, while others find the unique location justifies the cost.

We booked our stay with breakfast which was presented very posh, abundant and delicious. Our room offered enough space for 3 people. Every day there was fresh water in the fridge and to greet there was a bottle of in-house wine and typical Madeira cake. We appreciated the very large bathroom and the meticulous cleanliness throughout the house. The staff of the hotel is impressive with their kindness and commitment! The hotel impressed not only with its stately seat on the mountain with intoxicating views, but also with the generous parkland surrounding the hotel. We felt like in paradise, far from the hustle and bustle of the big city of Funchal (rental car highly recommended!). If it's possible at all, we definitely want to come back, right here at Casa Velha Do Palheiro

Hotel's Favourite
I have just returned from a solo stay here and I can’t recommend this hotel highly enough. The food was varied and of the highest standard and the gardens are delightful. I went for a few days of relaxation and to reset and that’s exactly what I did. It was calm and peaceful from the moment I arrived. But what really made my stay were the staff. They were so friendly and attentive and nothing was too much trouble. I felt so relaxed and cared for from the moment I arrived and definitely plan to return for more relaxation very soon.

An English Country Hotel set in the beautiful sub-tropical gardens of the Palheiro Estate with a challenging golf course and spa on hand. The staff are exceptionally accommodating and nothing is too much trouble. Shout outs to Luis, Braulio, Carla, Rosa and Carolina. This is the perfect location for a truly relaxing holiday where you can do as much or as little as you wish as there are lots of activities including golf, swimming, tennis, wine tours and sight seeing and the hotel will organise transport or you can use the shuttle services. The food at the hotel far exceeded our expectations and the menus are planned with precision using local produce. A real gem and we will definitely be back.

It was our 5th stay and we once again felt very comfortable in this beautiful place. Our suite was completely and tastefully renovated and the bathroom was also renovated. We could have done without the bathtub and would have liked more storage space in the bathroom.
We were, however, dissatisfied with the food on offer. We don't need an over-the-top breakfast buffet, but we do attach great importance to good quality. 3 cheap industrial cereals and always the same sausage and cheese selection without any decoration does not meet the standard of a 5-star hotel. Alternative spreads to butter would also have been desirable. Unfortunately, the quality of the food on offer in the evening was not to our taste either. We don't eat meat, so we tried the fish dishes and the 3 vegetarian options. The fish was without exception dry and hard, once even spoiled and smelled awful. This should have been noticed when it was being prepared in the kitchen, or at the latest when it was served. We had had enough of fish after that and ordered the vegetarian options, which were described in very flowery terms on the menu. The dishes served were more like hospital food. Unattractive mashed dishes without any garnish that tasted exactly as they looked. The sous vide cooked fennel was so hard that it was difficult to cut. And that at a price of almost 20 euros! We longed for really fresh fish, seafood, salad and vegetables, so in the evenings of the second week we drove to Funchal, where we had a delicious meal. We were not the only hotel guests who went out to eat after one or two evenings in the hotel because they were extremely dissatisfied. That is a real shame, because we would have preferred to spend the evenings comfortably in the hotel, like we used to. Then this would be the perfect place to spend a wonderful holiday again. Because everything else is perfect: the service, the quality of the massages, the well-maintained golf course and the wonderful ambience.

I booked a deluxe 2 night package with quite a few inclusions that turned out to be worth every penny. This hotel caters to more mature guests age-wise and to golfers so you will not find any noisy parties at all hours and rowdy crowds. the place is rather serene with subdued elegance and all time tranquility. if you wish, you can stroll in the adjacent gardens or take a swim in of of their two pools (outdoor and indoor). All meals are delicious and served with care My stay included a Wednesday and thus I was able to take part of the complimentary wine tasting, sort of happy hour, during which I met and spoke to the hotel general manager Mr. Norberto de Sousa and his two close associates Sonja and Catia. It was a delightful experience.

Pleasant hotel in the forest, 15 minutes drive from central Funchal.
The property is a part of a large complex with a golf course and prĂvate residences. The hotel is located in a 2 centuries old building plus two new wings. The gardens around are wonderful and the place is quiet and addequate to rest.
The staff was efficient, polite and profesional.
My room had good size, a good bathroom (without bidet), good towels and bathrobes, very good bed, a kettle with tea and instant coffee, good storage space, safety box, tv with good international channels selection, a complimentary bottle of Madeira wine and some sweets on arrival and was surprised by an excellent complimentary cake as i spent my birthday there. The air conditioned should improve: not enough power, and they do not allow to leave it on when going out.
Small dogs are accepted for 10 euros / night, which is a very reasonable price.
The swimming pool was pleasant.
There is sufficient free parking space.
I did not had time to use the Spa. I did not visit either their restaurant at the golf course.
The restaurant at the hotel was good, however the menu had limited variety.
Breakfast was good but not the best in my life.
I consider value for money reasonable.

Casa Velha do Palheiro Hotel is located in the north of Funchal next door to Palheiro Gardens and close to Monte Botanical Gardens and to the itinery to Pico do Ariero. Please note that a vehicle is required. The road to access this estate is a severe climb even for a car especially with our Panda...
We stayed in the Golf Wing building on the ground floor so that we could profit from the terrace in the evening (good choice).
The room is classic old english style but in good state with very good bedding and fresh linen. The bathroom (1 x small shower + 1 x bath + 1 x sink + 1 x Toilet) is under the 5* standard but not off putting.
The amenities pool, spa, tennis court, badmington, ping pong & kit are included for guests of the hotel which is nice.
The breakfast served either inside or outside is ok with a choice of pastery, fruit, savery, juices ect...however the filter coffee served every morning was not good a self expresso machine might be a good option...But I must admit that it was very nice to breakfast every mornin in the garden.
The staff are all very very good especially Lhuis, Sergio and little gesture (the Madeira wine bottle, Bolo, Mineral water) are always welcome.
We do recommand Casa Velha do Palheiro it is a nice place to stay.

11-13 December 2023
We spent the last days of our honeymoon at Casa Velha do Palheiro and it will always have a special place in our hearts. We were received with the warmest of welcomes by Mr. Norberto de Sousa and his fantastic team. Upon check-in we were received with a complimentary drink, very thoughtful. We had a unique room in the main house, one we could enjoy in peaceful bliss and also had plenty of space for us not too feel like we were in just one room. There was a welcoming letter from Mr. Norberto, a bottle of Madeira wine and the traditional "bolo de mel" (Madeira Christmas fruit cake) which was very kind. The sun rays filled the room, as we had two balconies and three windows! The bathroom was absolutely perfect for a couple looking for some precious time together. The elegant old bath was my favourite feature! We also spent lovely mornings at Casa Velha do Palheiro, slowly enjoying the delicious breakfast, both outside in the garden and inside the dining room. How attentive and kind the staff were with us, something truly admirable since it cannot be said of all 5* hotels! Something we really treasured was the silence that was respected during breakfast, for all guests could enjoy themselves. Our mornings and early afternoons were spent exploring the beautiful endless gardens of the estate. There is a sense of peace that grows upon you as you walk around. The gardeners worked away and smiled at us ever so politely as we passed by and wished them a good morning. I had the pleasure of enjoying the spa, absolutely unmissable! It is placed near the outdoor pool, in a quiet area. It is a vast spa that is very well equipped, with a welcoming reception, an indoor pool, a sauna, a Turkish bath, the changing rooms and plenty of individual treatment rooms. I enjoyed a truly relaxing back massage! I was very happy with the treatment room, which was warm when I entered and had a view to the garden. I cannot speak more highly of the massage bed, it was warm throughout the treatment, the towels were particularly well placed around the head area (which is not easy!) and extremely comfortable (in fact, it is the most comfortable massage bed I have ever been on!). In the evenings, we would have a delightful drink at the bar, which had elegant Christmas decorations, there was soft background music playing and the fire was burning. It felt like our living room!
Thank you for everything, dear Casa Velha do Palheiro, we would love to come back!

An incredible place with a stunning property and a magnificent garden – it was a pleasure to stroll around with our dog. The overall atmosphere is very appealing: tranquility, privacy, and a mature guest crowd, which is a huge plus as everyone respects each other’s space.
I lowered the rating only because of the poorly designed “Do Not Disturb” and “Please Clean the Room” door signs. The wind kept flipping them, and as a result, we were woken up several times in the morning despite setting “Do Not Disturb,” and our room wasn’t cleaned when we requested it.
We didn’t make it to the restaurant because of inconsistencies with room service—ordered a Caesar salad with grilled chicken but received boiled chicken instead, and the same issue happened with the sandwiches. Everything was tasty and well-prepared, just not what we expected.
We would love to return and will definitely recommend the hotel. The wine was fantastic—we ordered some in Madrid and have already shared it with family!
With great respect,
Kseniia & Kiryl

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Casa Velha. Quiet and peaceful location away the busy hustle and bustle of Funchal. The room was very comfortable. The food and wine excellent. The staff were attentive and helpful. The gardens were a joy to stroll around each day. It is a winding road up to to Casa Velha but that makes it different. The hotel have a bus to Funchal each day but there is a service bus every hour at the hotel drive entrance (€2)
