This very special five star hotel truly stands out in our experience due to the amazing culture of service that we, as guests experience from all of the staff. Nothing is ever too much trouble, everyone here, from the very special General Manager, right through to our delightful chamber maid, will always go out of their way to accommodate our needs.

This charmingly luxurious property also delivers on its location, being less than an easy twenty minutes downhill walk to Funchal's chic city centre shops, bars, and restaurants.

The guest rooms are vast and beautifully furnished, the common parts light and airy, the restaurant superb for a very special breakfast, complete with delicious sparkling wine, and in the evenings, for supper, with a wide and varied international menu, beautifully cooked, presented, and also elegantly served, with a fine choice of prime Portuguese wines.

Add the two pools, the gym, the games room, the vast underground car park, and the carefully tended gardens, and you have perfection in town centre accomodation.

Another tranquil break at this amazing Hotel

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 week break at this lovely hotel for the third time.

We were given a lovely welcome from Caterina and Maura on reception, before being taken to our room by Caterina who helped to carry our luggage.

As always, all rooms and all areas of the hotel are kept spotless by the excellent cleaning staff. The reception staff are very helpful, including the 2 girls mentioned above, together with Pedro and Zara.

The food in the restaurant is always excellent, served by friendly, pleasant and professional staff. Felipe, Mathias, Eduardo, Alexander, Athena and Rada, who all go out of their way to ensure that you have a lovely dining experience. The ambience in the restaurant is so relaxing and tables etc are dressed with beautiful linen and cutlery which enhances the fine dining experience.

My wife says that the thing that keeps her going when out her morning runs (whilst running up the last hill to the hotel! ) is the thought of the excellent breakfast. The restaurant has recently started a new initiative on Friday nights whereby, the chefs prepare the food in front of you. This is really appreciated as it gives you a chance to thank the chefs who work behind the scenes making delicious food.

Special mention also to Rosie in Customer services who is so helpful and goes out of her way find challenging walks etc and activities to do, even printing off bus timetables. She really is so enthusiastic and spends a lot of time researching things for us.
The bar staff are also very pleasant. Sitting next to the area outside the bar in the afternoon is so relaxing and has a tranquil atmosphere, where you can sit and enjoy a drink and a snack if you feel peckish, in a beautiful garden setting.

The hotel was celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year and they offered us an orchid to plant in the garden which was a lovely touch, as we were also celebrating our Wedding Anniversary.

We have already booked to return in January and are counting the days until then.

Thanks very much once again for such an enjoyable stay. The staff are a credit to the hotel owner, Andreas.

We thoroughly recommend the Quintinha São Joao hotel and suggest eating in the restaurant as you are unlikely to find food anywhere which is as delicious and such a wide choice as in this hotel.

The Quintinha Sao João is a very special property. Situated close to Funchal's vibrant centre, it is set in a couple of acres of carefully tended gardens and offers discriminating guests everything to ensure a perfect stay.

Common parts throughout the hotel are all spacious, flooded with natural light, impeccably maintained, and charmingly furnished.

Guest rooms are large, well decorated and extremely comfortable. The double beds are vast and extremely comfortable too. Balconies are generously sized and offer pleasant views.

The hotel has an excellent, comfortable and well stocked bar The Vasco de Gama, which opens daily from 11.00am and also serves light meals though to 6.30pm

This opens onto a charming and large terrace which is full of flowers and is shaded by ancient trees. The bar manager, Antonio, and his skillful team ensure that time spent here is a relaxing pleasure.

The hotel's restaurant A Morgadinha has a large and dedicated following amongst Funchal's affluent business community and offers a unique and varied selection of Portuguese and European dishes daily.

Open from 7.00pm daily, there is also a regular choice of Goan curries on offer. Guests are always recommended to reserve their tables here, so as to avoid disappointment.

Other facilities include a games room, and well equipped gym, a vast underground car park for guests and diners, a world class spa for those wanting to be pampered, and a shuttle bus service, although Funchal's prime shopping area is just a 15 minute walk away.

There are two swimming pools as well.

Standards of service throughout the hotel are truly exceptional, and every staff member will go out of their way to ensure each guest's stay is both memorable and perfect.

This luxury Quintinha has now become my address in Funchal.

The blend of elegant accommodation in a luxurious small hotel of just 42 rooms, assures that each guest enjoys the very highest levels of personal attention and individual care, from the kindest and most attentive staff I have ever encountered in any hotel, in which it has been my pleasure to stay. The property is quite beautiful and located in an excellent residential neighborhood close to the city's vibrant heart. In fact the premier shopping mall, The Plaza, is an easy 15 minutes stroll away.

For less energetic guests however there's a hotel owned shuttle bus, and cabs are inexpensive and easily available via the reception staff.

Guest rooms are vast, light and airy, and beautifully furnished.

The hotel's restaurant A Morgadinha is one of Funchal's finest, offering a first class menu and excellent wine list. This allows me the opportunity to dine in great style, without venturing outside, except when I choose to meet friends in the city centre.

It also serves one of the most nourishing and varied choice of breakfasts I have ever come across, including sparkling wine, which I am quite free to help myself to.

To keep me in trim, there's a fully equipped gym, two swimming pools, and a games room.

In the evenings, the relaxing bar, which frequently features calming piano music, allows me to wind down with a nicely mixed cocktail, or some times, a well chilled G&T.

As a long stay guest, I make regular use of the excellent laundry and dry cleaning service, both of which are very fairly priced.

This is truly a property with an emphasis on service, and where I feel like a highly valued guest.

My husband and I returned yesterday after a lovely week at this fabulous hotel.
It’s in a residential area approx 15 minute walk mostly down hill into the centre of Funchal. Obviously, the return walk is up mostly uphill but there are loads of taxis in town, €5-7 Euros approx.
There is a free shuttle bus Mon-Fr but it only runs a couple of times a day.
This spotless hotel is tranquil, has lovely gardens, 2 pools ( one ‘rooftop’, one outdoor) and a spar.
There was a little road noise, but that can’t be helped due to its location.
We had a beautiful standard double room with balcony overlooking the garden.
We stayed b&b , the breakfast was fresh, varied and plentiful with freshly cooked hot food choices if wanted . We had a la carte on 2 nights- really nice.
Light snacks are served during the day on a lovely patio area.
There was a singer and a pianist a couple of nights, lovely when sitting relaxing with a drink.
All the staff are exceptional, very helpful, polite and always have a cheery greeting for you .
Rosie was great , booking tours and giving you information on buses, attractions etc.
Our first time on the beautiful island of Maderia but we will certainly be back and to the Quintinha Sao João, we were very sad when our week was over.
Thank you to everyone for making our holiday so memorable
Lesley & Andy

It’s hard to know where to start as everything and everyone about this special place deserves a mention. It is without doubt the best place we have stayed in.

The hotel is in a great location, beautifully thought out and decorated with traditional art and antiques. Outside you will find stunning, well maintained gardens and grounds with an astounding array of plants of Madeira along with a lovely peaceful pool area with amazing views. There is a steepish hill walk down into Funchal centre (and of course back uphill on the way back!) which takes around 15 minutes but there is also a courtesy bus that runs twice a day.

The rooms are super comfortable and very spacious, with a large bathroom and lots of space for belongings.

Breakfast is excellent with a fabulous choice of fruit, breads, cereals, meats and cheeses, plus you can order from the kitchen if you want hot food, which is made to order. I would highly recommend dining in the hotel restaurant, A Morgadinha, as the food is delicious and provided us with the best meals we had during our stay in Funchal. The food is beautiful (try the rack of lamb, it is amazing!). The service is impeccable - the staff are friendly, courteous and professional with a personal touch.

All the staff are wonderful - from reception staff, bar staff, restaurant staff and housekeeping, all took pride in their roles and gave exceptional service which made our stay extra special. Thank you to Felipe, Antonio, Bernardo and Marco (your wine knowledge is fascinating), and anyone else I may have forgotten.

I would say that even though this hotel is indeed a beautiful place to stay, what really makes it extra special is the little personal touches and the obvious pride all the staff (and the manager!) take in making your experience the best it can be.

We genuinely miss being there and hope to return as soon as we can.

Thank you for making our holiday so special.

A charming hotel very close to the centre of Funchal. Staff throughout were all amazing with a great welcome from Ana in the Hotel reception, friendly service from Marco at Breakfast and the occasional Dinner and super Cocktails served by Tony in the Bar. Just 3 mentioned but many others met during the week’s stay that were friendly, professional and always willing to help. The Hotel communal areas are lovely to look at whenever wandering around or relaxing in and very well maintained too. The facilities we used were the 2 Pools, outside and inside Bar, Gym, Games Room, Main Garden Patio and Car Park for when we had a Hire Car (Free Parking).
The Room (Premium with Balcony) was as described and we were lucky to get the beautiful garden view too. Room was spacious, air conditioned (useful as Madeira Humidity was in the 60’s) and with very functional separate sitting room and balcony. Complimentary selection in the fridge on arrival and from then on, daily complimentary still and sparkling water. The En-suite was spacious too but some evidence of tiredness ie marks in Bath and sink area however just wear and tear.
Many reviews have mentioned the hill to negotiate when returning from Funchal so I will too. We are almost 60 and had no issues but it is a challenge especially in the high humidity so plan ahead and use the hotel’s courtesy bus when available, if not then it’s a walk or a taxi. Breakfasts were a wonderful start to each day with a well stocked buffet or selection of Chef produced dishes (Eggs various, Pancakes, Waffles etc).
Thank you to all at Quintinha São João for a wonderful stay.

What a lovely hotel. Only 42 rooms so you will experience a level of service that you just dont get in much larger establishments. Every single member of staff from reception to restaurant and housekeeping was super friendly and helpful. not once in the week we were there did any member of staff fail to acknowledge us, even in passing. As a traditional hotel i have to say the decor, pictures and furniture are all in keeping and absolutely lovely. Bedroom and bathroom were both large, well appointed and very comfortable. We had a great view towards the bay of Funchal. Indoor and outdoor pools, nice gardens, lovely bar/lounge area and restaurant all add to the enjoyment of staying here. We were on a B&B tariff, and there was plenty of choice both hot and cold. My only little criticism being the bacon and sausages. Catering for a fair percentage of Brits they could maybe find a better supplier. We only had one evening meal during our stay and i have to say it was excellent along with the service.
Location wise the hotel may not suit everyone. 15-20 minutes walk downhill to the nearest restaurants/shops. Taxis are cheap though so not a big issue.

Dear Villajim, Thank you so much for staying at the Quintinha de São João and for writing your review on TripAdviser. I really appreciated reading your comments regarding our facilities and general ambiance of our special Quinta. Sadly, we just can’t get back bacon and English sausages on the island so we have to go with the Portuguese equivalent. We wish we could! Certainly ranking as one of the world's 'Small Luxury Hotels', this delightful 42 room property delivers on all fronts for those, like us, who seek a carefree holiday destination, in a cared for environment. The staff here are both caring, helpful, and 100% professional at all times.

The location, in one of Funchal's best residential areas, and just a twenty minute downhill walk.to the city's chicest shops, restaurants and bars couldn't be better.

The peacefully beautiful one acre garden, complete with outdoor pool and luxurious spa, can easily make you forget how close you are to the busy city.

The guest rooms are vast, as are the superbly comfortable beds, the common areas are flooded with natural light and studded with antique furniture, artefacts, and lovely floral arrangements, all of which serve make one think of ones home.

Breakfast here rivals anything I've enjoyed in many of my stays in other fine five star hotels around the world.

Supper, also served with great style in the light and airy Morgadinha restaurant, is a gourmet's delight, with a wine list to match.

The hotel also offers an indoor pool offering fine city views, a gym, a games room, and a huge underground carpark, which is free for the use of guests.

Quintinha Sao João, my home and treasured address when visiting Madeira.

The hotel is badged as 5* but it in reality it is. 4* hotel. We booked a junior suite which was a good size, however the beds were very hard and the balcony rather smaller than we would have expected given we paid for a suite. The separate shower in the bathroom was welcome but we had a dreadful view overlooking another high rise hotel which cut our Mountain View’s into two. The gardens need some more care and attention in part as well, there is a broken old fountain in one corner leaving this part of the garden Loki h uncared for and unloved. The gardens are much also smaller than the hotel website would leave you to believe. The website gives a much more positive view of the hotel than its reality, unfortunately. Staff are well trained and attentive and housekeeping are excellent, our beds were turned down each night and everywhere is very clean however we were disappointed not to have received a small gift in our room, something which we would have expected in a suite. The hotel is based in a very built up residential area which was noisy with traffic, building work and incessant barking dogs so not it racing at all restful sitting on our balcony. The spa is rather limited and you pay to use its facilities not just for treatments which was a surprise and disappointing, both pools are small too. The food is fine - we were half board but the set menu on half board is again very limited so do ask to choose dishes from the al la carte menu. The weekly gala dinner is a rather odd picnic arrangement in the scruffier part of the garden, and as guests on half board we had no choice but to take part in it. The weather was hot, warmer than average and the humidity high which means that 77degrees fells like 88degrees and a number of guests had been bitten by mosquitoes. Guests are drawn from the UK, France, Germany and Switzerland and there were few young children the hotel being much more suited to older adults. Madeira of course has an abundance of hotels including other quinthas so do look around would be our advice at alternatives before settling on this one.

Dear 319tracyw, We take note of all comments and reviews from our guests as we strive for satisfaction and perfection for our guests. We have obviously failed where you are concerned but, in our defense, we have tried everything in our power to satisfy you from start to finish. We have 42 bedrooms and 44 members of staff all ready to help and serve you. On behalf of all of us and despite our efforts to cater for your various “special requests” we are bitterly disappointed that you feel as you do. You booked a Junior Suite and asked to move which was impossible as we are fully booked and Junior Suites are in the same area anyway. All our Junior Suites overlook the gardens of our Mother House and are of a substantial size including a walk-in shower which was one of your requisites. They are normally rooms favoured by our guests. In the many contacts you had with our staff, you didn’t mention once that you found the beds hard – we would have happily placed mattress toppers on your beds to resolve this problem. Our one hectare of subtropical garden with over 300 different plant species and century standing trees is most certainly loved and cared for. There are some statues that are old and treasured which we wouldn’t consider replacing. We are a 5-star Quinta with lots of character. We are not sure what “small gifts” you were expecting? Guests in our suites receive exactly the same treatment as all our esteemed customers. We provide tea and coffee making facilities and free bottles of water and drinks in the minibar and an invitation to a get-together cocktail (we are sorry that you did not join us)…for everybody. Our Friday dinner is by no means a “gala”! Our intention is quite the opposite! It is an informal meal in our beautiful gardens on a warm night but by no means a “picnic”! As described on our site, our Spa facilities are charged. No surprise in this though as they are reserved solely per couple and closed to anybody else. We hope you find another Quinta with two swimming pools, one hectare of subtropical gardens, a spa, 15 minutes’ walk from the center of Funchal with 44 people giving their all that will succeed where we have failed. Yours sincerely André Barreto General Manager

Hello On our 2 visits (not NYE) evening meals are always served to table by excellent waiting staff. Breakfast is a bit of both! Dress code is at least smart casual very surprised if they insisted on much more than that on NYE

"Take insect repellent-we weren’t prepared for mosquitoes in November. Our hotel provided their own minibus to Funchal and back. Comfy shoes."

"It is a 20 mins walk downhill into Funchal and walking back is not for the faint hearted. We did not have a car. Taxis are not expensive."
