This fantastic old building is steeped in history! Originally built as an estate family house in the early1900s, it was the school for evacuated children from Gibraltar in the second world war, then a private club for British ex pats in the 50s, being converted to a hotel in the early 60s. This fantastic old "colonial" building will take you...

Good Location up on hill and relatively easy walk to city including old town for dinner and general activities. Rooms were basic and no amenities provided with exception of shampoo and BAth gel in a dispenser. Was little disappointed that no WIFI in rooms and only on lobby and maybe that is something the hotel could work on as an...

We stayed with this hotel for a week. It is nowhere near a 3 star standard. Sheets nor towels are changed daily. Breakfast really poor, they don't even serve orange juice! I attach a couple of pictures to show how a room looks like, and it was a better one with sea view. Fungus in bathroom, dirty carpet and a...

The hotel was up a very steep hill, so not suitable for anyone who has health or fitness issues, but if that doesn't bother you then it's worth the walk if only for the view. We had a sea view from our room and it was amazing looking out and seeing the whole city, and the harbour with the cruise...

Love this place. It's very close to town and a bit away from the worst tourist places. The staff were a bit "funny" but that did not mater at all. The building and the terrace is what makes this place so great. Love the evening view from the terrace. The rooms are nice.

A great building in a great place. Not in the extremely touristic resort zone of Funchal, but near the old town. Building needs updating, which currently is being done. Personel lacked basic conversational and hospitality skills (few exceptions) and did not succeed (or in some cases even try) in making our stay as pleasant as it could have been. Really...

Very good location, however it is up a steep hill although Funchal is quite hilly in places. Staff are lovely. Hotel has an unique charm and personality. Only bad thing was the wifi because we were relying on it to plan our daily activities- we couldn't connect to it from our room and was very slow even downstairs.

Went to Hotel Monte Carlo 11 September 2016. Immediately disappointed with first room shown, dark, dingy, musty and on a "wing" at the back. Moved to no. 3 inside the main hotel. Stained carpet, bed made out of hardboard on wooden legs, with a crinkly old torn mattress and two well used pillows, no way of locking door from inside,...

Located half way up a steep incline should not put you off. Plenty of taxis available locally fairly priced. As for the hotel - splendid. Location bonus is the stunning views over the city and harbour. Buffet breakfast and every morning fresh bread, cheeses, meats, and fruits available. Very good bar service with the night time cocktails well worth the...

This hotel has surprised me in a positive way. I only stayed for 1 night but it was enough time to enjoy the roof pool with marvelous views and the old spectacular building. The furniture was a bit old and breakfast could improve but I guess for the price to can't compare
