A lovely room at the top of the hotel with a balcony and a great mountain view. Very central to town and a nice walk down. The walk back up the hill is great for those wanting to exercise a little more but at 5euros a taxi is a cheap alternative. The staff were great, very helpful and pleasant, all...

Historic hotel which as other reviewers have indicated, would benefit from some updating. However good value for money. It felt a little like a back packers hotel, with very basic facilities. The room we had was very dark with low energy bulbs which added to the gloom at nighttime. I found it very difficult to dress for the evening as...

This hotel has much charm. It is neat and clean. Our room was surprisingly small with a balcony. The bathroom was spacious and we had fresh towels and room clean up everyday. Breakfast was included and it was absolutely fine. So overall, things were quite fine...not amazing and not terrible but quite fine and everything we needed. We enjoyed the...

Nice hotel with spectacular views. Just a short walk into the main town, but a steep walk back (get a cab for €5). Make sure you get a sea view room; it is well worth the money. Beds are a bit uncomfortable and the breakfast is nothing to write home about, but the staff are superb.

We stayed for 3 nights during our 2 week holiday to enjoy Funchal. It is in a wonderful location in an old area up a hill but close to walk to many restaurants and the town. Get a room with a sea view. The views are brilliant from the very sad rooftop pool with 6 rubbish sun loungers. View brilliant...

Brilliant location, full of character, excellent staff, more than adequate breakfast. After eating in some wonderful restaurants in town, the walk up the hill to the hotel more than justified the 2nd bottle of wine with dinner. For all the moans about the hill my husband is 73 and I am 62----it was a doddle. Planning to revisit soon.

This fantastic old building is steeped in history! Originally built as an estate family house in the early1900s, it was the school for evacuated children from Gibraltar in the second world war, then a private club for British ex pats in the 50s, being converted to a hotel in the early 60s. This fantastic old "colonial" building will take you...

Good Location up on hill and relatively easy walk to city including old town for dinner and general activities. Rooms were basic and no amenities provided with exception of shampoo and BAth gel in a dispenser. Was little disappointed that no WIFI in rooms and only on lobby and maybe that is something the hotel could work on as an...

We stayed with this hotel for a week. It is nowhere near a 3 star standard. Sheets nor towels are changed daily. Breakfast really poor, they don't even serve orange juice! I attach a couple of pictures to show how a room looks like, and it was a better one with sea view. Fungus in bathroom, dirty carpet and a...

The hotel was up a very steep hill, so not suitable for anyone who has health or fitness issues, but if that doesn't bother you then it's worth the walk if only for the view. We had a sea view from our room and it was amazing looking out and seeing the whole city, and the harbour with the cruise...
