Choosing to stay here was a good decision. The views from the rooms are amazing overlooking the ocean and the city. There are many different levels and beautiful poolside gardens to also take in the views.

It is a 20 minute bus ride from Funchal, where the bus stop is right outside the door and costs about €2 one way. The hotel shuttle bus also goes into Funchal 3 times a day so you can use that instead for free.

The restaurant food is really delicious and the breakfast is not a continental breakfast but a full hot breakfast with eggs and bacon and more.

The rooms are slightly dated with an 80's dark wood and gold decor. However, the bed and pillows are most comfortable and make an incredible night's sleep.

Obrigado!🙂

A last minute decision to have a break in Madeira saw us end up at the Ocean Gardens Hotel.

The hotel is situated around 2.5 miles from the centre and old town of Funchal. Perched up high on the hillside it offers splendid views of Funchal Bay.

We had a sea view room rather than a bay view room but that wasn’t an issue as you could see the bay from the roof top terrace or the restaurant area whenever you desired.

The room itself was spacious and spotlessly clean. A decent shower (head fixed slightly too high for our liking) in the bathroom and a nice little balcony, which was great for spotting the boats out to sea.

A small mini fridge allowed us room for chilling our bottles of water and juice.

The pool area was large enough and we never struggled for a lounger, we were up there reasonably early most days though.

Breakfast was plentiful, continental in style but there were sausage, eggs and bacon available too. We discovered warm milk with muesli goes really well as does the really tasty honey for dipping croissants in.

On the first night as we arrived late and dined at the attached restaurant. A hearty plate of what seemed to be a local stew was consumed, was perfectly decent in terms of taste and price. The only other food we had was toasties one day for lunch, this was fine with garlic butter (they really, really like garlic on Madeira). There is a bbq in the evenings and the smells coming from it were delicious. The hotel offers half board but we can’t comment on the quality of what’s on offer from that.

If you don’t have a car whilst here the bus service is excellent. The no 39 (Montanha to Funchal and Zona Industrial on the way home) stops right at the hotel front door. Buses into town and back are approx hourly with the last bus leaving Funchal at around 2130. The buses all across Funchal are €1.95 per person one way and overall they proved to be a safe and reliable form of transport for us. The odd occasion we required a taxi cost us around €12 from the old town back to hotel.

All in all this is a good hotel if you prefer a bit of peace and quiet. We don’t really have too many complaints about our visit. Only real one being the aircon was a bit temperamental. Not enough to spoil our visit.

A good week all in all. Nice and relaxing as planned. Not all of the hotel was open (due to Covid) and this is understandable.

I’d say it’s more 3 star than 4 star. A solid very good hotel (4/5) clean, Covid safe and good attentive staff. If you choose to come here you won’t be disappointed.

We stayed here as part of a package called Portugal Getaways, and we expected a standard tourist hotel. Instead, our spacious room had a lovely balcony with a stunning view of downtown Funchal, a delicious breakfast with eggs for my hearty breakfast-loving husband, and ample fresh fruit and juice plus yogurt and excellent croissants for me, and a gorgeous orchid in the room. The front desk staff, especially the daytime young woman, were helpful and professional advising on public bus schedules and even getting an extra hotel jitney for us one day. The gem of an upstairs rooftop garden with a pool, a bar, and lounge chairs galore was an added bonus and perfect for a relaxing drink after a day of sightseeing. We only ate dinner there one night with fine pizza and salad so can't judge the meals other than breakfast. We took several tours while we were in Madeira and heard from other visitors that the downtown hotels can be quite noisy, so were doubly glad to come home to our mountain lodgings on the #39 bus, so easy and convenient. Highly recommend this clean, beautiful and friendly hotel. (One thing I wish I had known is that the cruise ships are in on Mondays and Tuesdays so it's better to tour downtown on any of the other days--you can see the ships from the balconies.)

We have just returned from staying at Ocean Gardens Hotel, this is an Excellent Hotel, very Clean and the staff were pleasant. The rooms overlooking Funchal were amazing, excellent views and rooms very spacious. Excellent bathroom, big walk in shower.
The only criticism is the Hotel bar was not open but you could get a drink in the Restaurant and we did have a meal there one evening which was excellent. It would have been nice for shuttle bus to run more frequent and always seem full at 10am. You can get a bus outside Hotel to Funchal for 2.20 Euros and a taxi coming back between 10 and 15 euros, doing this twice a day could add quite a bit to your spends. Bus journey approx 10 mins, you feel like you are on a roller coaster with the hills and bends. No side walks to walk down so can feel a bit dangerous especially with cars flying around corners.
Lovely outside pool on top floor with bar, although this was not open when we first arrived.

Stayed for a week and was upgraded to the panoramic tower on the first floor with stunning views over the bay. Lovely to watch the sunset and the cruise liners coming and going. Modern bathroom and big balcony. We had difficulty adjusting the air conditioning so used to leave the patio door open slightly and slept well. Could hear some traffic noise but it did not bother us. Breakfast had an adequate selection and plenty of it. There was no kettle in the room but when we asked they found one after a few days. That is the only fault we could find for this 4* hotel as we would expect to find tea and coffee making facilities. We chose the location for the views and how easy it was to get onto the VR1 instead of negotiating the traffic in Funchal. We used the shuttle bus once to go into Funchal for the day. Ate at the restaurant in the hotel on a couple of occasions which suited us after we had been exploring the island and came back tired.

We are just back from staying two weeks at this hotel. The room was very well equipped, the only thing lacking being a kettle, which we took with us. The bed was very comfortable and we both slept well. The cleaning staff were available each day, so the room, and hotel as a whole were very clean. Staff were very helpful when I had any request. There were plenty of buses of a weekday stopping right outside the hotel, in both directions. Saturday and Sunday services were less frequent, so you had to be organised. A free hotel shuttle was also available Monday to Friday, although this had to be pre booked. I did walk into town once but, without pavements, walking back up again was too difficult. In this case taxis are usually plentiful, the cost being approx 10 Euros. There was also a small general shop within walking distance.
The hotel restaurant provided a good breakfast, with a choice of evening meal. Again, there was a local restaurant within walking distance as an alternative. Our room had the shower installed over the bath, which gave me the choice. Anybody with mobility issues might need a room with a walk in shower.
All staff were helpful and I would have no hesitation in using the hotel again.

We visited Funchal in December 2020 in-between COVID-19 lockdowns. Staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and were incredibly patient and helpful with our many questions, including some anxious times around flight cancellations. Ocean Gardens is located outside the city centre but this wasn't an issue for us at all as the hotel operates a fixed and free shuttle bus into and from the city centre, which is very handy (but must be booked in advance). Otherwise bus connections are also excellent, with a bus stop immediately outside the hotel and staff helpfully supplying you with the timetable. If you are hiring a car there are ample parking spaces and the city centre is only about a 10 minute drive away, and we were given good tips on where to park in town. We tried a lot of the facilities including the pool, sauna, room service and restaurant/bar and were happy with everything. The gardens are maintained beautifully and are a joy to behold. I would say that some of the decor and fittings are a bit faded but this didn't matter really, as our room was spacious, the bed very comfy and the views absolutely stunning. I'm giving Ocean Gardens 5 stars for its excellent service and would like to say a big thank you to all staff for making our stay so memorable and special!

Ocean Gardens is one fantastic hotel: fabulous view, great staff, clean, nice beds, safe...and has terrific balconies. The restaurant also is fine. Everything is...elegant, really. The only downside and it’s a major one, is the road directly in front of the complex. The noise from this busy road is ear splitting. You really can’t sit comfortably on the balcony or have the slider door open at night. Ear plugs are only partly helpful. It’s a shame, really, that I can’t recommend the place for that reason only.

I stayed for 5 nights in this good hotel. The views are splendid; my taxi driver said they were probably the best of any hotel in Funchal and he was right.
I’d booked a superior bay view room which is in the newer part: good sized room, huge bathroom with walk in shower, lots of storage and wardrobe space and a balcony with brilliant views. Checkin was welcoming and efficient.

The layout of the hotel is a bit confusing at first being on so many levels but once understood it’s fine. The garden and pool area on the roof is lovely to sit in: loads of different areas and a pool (which I didn’t try). And the views are awesome. I spent a morning working from the roof!

Everything was really clean, the room serviced really well each day (mid afternoon for my 4th floor room) and I felt safe.

The point to note (as other reviewers have) is that the hotel is some way outside Funchal.
Walking isn’t really an option: busy roads, no pavement and extremely steep.
The best way is by bus. The Hotel provides a shuttle 3 times a day (which I didn’t use) and also details of the local number 39 Bus (about 1 an hour).
BUT there are lots of other buses that will stop en route to/from further away places. I’d say there is a bus every 20 mins or so most of the day- download one of the travel apps (Moovit worked for me) and follow that. I went into Funchal and back everyday, day and night and had no problems (the bus drivers will like you more if you have expect money or change, not notes!). Even getting a bus back we’ll into the evening after a dinner in Funchal was easy.

My disappointment was over breakfast; perfectly decent (cereals, fruit, breads, cold cuts, cheese etc) just perhaps a bit boring after a few days.

So- stay for the views which are amazing, and if you don’t need to be in walking distance of the town and are happy to use public transport. If you’re someone who likes to be in the thick of the action in a town, it’s probably not for you.

Despite the boring breakfast, I’d stay again.

Hi sorry I took so long to answer. The breakfast buffet is fine but I agree with the other review that unless you get a bus or taxi into Funchal there are limited places to eat nearby. However the hotel restaurant is adequate and usually has a fish option.
