After a disappointing holiday at the White Rocks hotel in Lassi , Kefalonia in June this year , it’s been a pleasure to have had a weeks holiday at the Castanheiro Boutique hotel . We booked this hotel based on reviews and location and we were not disappointed , we met up with our friends Sue and Steve who had already had a weeks holiday in another hotel on the island .The hotel itself was a mixture a modern an traditional ,the bedrooms were large and comfortable , ours looked out onto the street outside but it was fairly quiet , lovely bed ,brilliant shower , plenty of cupboards and large screen television. Breakfast and dinning areas were spotless inside and out , large bar area and reading areas . We did not use the rooftop pool or bar area but we had a look and the view was fantastic . As regards the food at this hotel I would give it ten out of ten , breakfast consisted of dried fruits ,fresh fruits ,cereals , help yourself cooked , toast , cakes etc or you could order cooked fresh food by the chef , lots of tea , coffee ,fruit juice. Evening meals were a treat , three course , soups etc , varieties of meat , fish , rice and vegetables and lastly some really good deserts , a bottle of house white was about 17 euros and a beer about 4 euros ,excellent service . The bar served some good inexpensive drinks and most nights there was musical entertainment . The hotel itself is about a fifteen minute walk to the main shopping centre an water front ,this was our fourth visit to the island but it’s still worth going up in the cable car or a visit to the market place to see the flowers/ vegetables/ fruits and fish and to have a coffee above. Funchal has changed a lot over the years bot it’s not lost it’s old world charm . As regards coming back never say never and if we did we would definitely stay at the Castenhiero hotel again.

Having visited Madeira many times we knew this was a good location. After reading reviews and popping in last year for a look round we decided to switch from our normal beach front location. Lots of positives. Excellent breakfast, cosy, well appointed public areas, a large room (studio) and very helpful staff. However we were disappointed by the fact that neither pool was suitable for proper swimming and the kitchenette was crammed and poorly designed (a 2 ring hob which most guests would be unlikely to use and a microwave with no other space left). Also no iron or ironing board available was unusual to say the least in a hotel of this category/rating. If none of these three things bother you then a good choice for a holiday in a lovely location.

Dear Guest, Thank you very much for having chosen Castanheiro Boutique Hotel for your Holidays and taking the time to share your experience. We are thrilled to know that you enjoyed our hotel, our excellent breakfast, our public areas and ambiance. I am delight that the team went above and beyond and helped you to get the most out of your visit. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with some aspects of your stay. Indeed, our pool, being part of a boutique hotel located in historic buildings, is not large enough for long swimming distances. Regarding the kitchenettes from our sudios, were not designed for large-scale cooking, but rather to provide support for those who wish to prepare small meals, and our guests typically do not book our studios with the intention of cooking full meals. As for the iron, we do not provide them in the rooms due to some past incidents caused by less careful guests. However, we do offer a laundry service. We appreciate your understanding and hope that, despite these points, you enjoyed our location and other hotel services. We also hope you choose to stay with us again on a future visit to Madeira. Kind regards, Sandra Abreu, sales manager

One of the top hotels we have ever stayed at. All the team that work here are very friendly and professional and nothing is too much trouble. We stayed on a half board basis and all the food was exceptional. Breakfast was a buffet style with a mind boggling choice of food on offer including a choice of freshly cooked egg or pancake dishes. Every evening meal was a three course affair that always had a soup or salad starter, a vegetarian, risotto, fish or meat dish followed by a choice from two desserts. There is a roof top endless pool and bar area that has various food available throughout the day until six in the evening and all at very reasonable prices. In the basement there is a full Spa area offering treatments at good prices, it also has a wave pool with power showers and jacuzzi type beds and chairs built in. There is a sauna and steam room and below this there is a fully equipped gym. The room was very spacious with plenty of storage and always kept clean. Fresh towels always available including extra large towels for use in the Spa area. The location is very good, just a two minute stroll and you're in town with everything on your doorstep. We are already looking at booking again for next year.

Our second stay at this hotel and once again it was perfect. Ideal location in a quiet street in Funchal within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. The whole staff work as a team to ensure you have the best holiday experience. The rooms are spacious and well equipped. Complimentary toiletries are provided along with beautifully fluffy towels and pool towels are also provided in your room. The rooms and public areas are kept spotlessly clean by the housekeeping team. Breakfast has both a buffet and also freshly cooked items from a menu. The restaurant doesn't have the canteen feel of many hotels at breakfast time. The whole hotel has a peaceful and relaxed feel to it and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Congratulations Hotel Castanheiro on maintaining such a high standard holiday experience. Roll on next year

The best welcoming staff! The Madeira art of welcoming the visitors! A warming atmosphere and welcoming staff, very professional. Hotel location very central yet not noisy, you can relax even in the middle of Funchal city… Really a boutique hotel with all the facilities and commodities either for a shirt or long stay. An incredible fresh smell of cleaning while you pass through the corridor or enter in the room. Very good breakfast and excellent service from Reception and Restaurant, all staff very friendly and professional, knowing the values of the family that owns the hotel.

We have now found 2 fantastic hotels in different countries in the same year, 2023 is turning out to be a good one. We recently had an 11 night stay at the Castanheiro in August and what a gem it turned out to be. Not having summer holidayed in a city hotel before we arrived a little nervous as to whether we had made the right decision, however we soon realised we had nothing to worry about.
The Castanheiro is in a great location in the centre of Funchal, within easy walking of the bars and restaurants with fabulous panoramic views from the roof top pool and bar, which over looks the harbour. We chose a deluxe room with a balcony and weren't disappointed, the room was spacious and well appointed with a very comfortable bed and a small balcony with a table and chairs, with enough space to sit at.
We stayed half board and the a la carte evening meals didn't disappoint with a choice of starters, mains and desserts and was every bit as good as the main hotel restaurant which is open to the public. It gave us an opportunity to try dishes which we wouldn't normally gone for. The outside courtyard dining was a great experience and a lovely setting to eat. Drinks in the hotel bar were very reasonable for a city centre hotel and the measures were agreeable.
Our stay was made by the wonderful staff who work here. The service provided could not be faulted, they all work hard to make your stay as pleasurable as possible, nothing is too much trouble and the service is definitely with a smile. We hate to single out anyone, as they were all excellent, however we must make mention of Carolina, Anna and Elia who never seemed to be away from the place and who throughout our stay always made an effort to chat and looked after us.
All in all we could not find anything to fault with the Catanheiro and would definitely stay here again next time we visit Madeira, hopefully for a New Years Eve.

One of the reasons we picked this hotel is that it is 5 minutes walk from the sea front and main centre with plenty of restaurants to choose from. An added bonus is that it is not at the top of any steep hills like a lot of other hotels we looked at.
We had early flights so were dropped off at the hotel around 11:00. Reception informed us that our rooms would not be available till 14:00. We were offered a free glass of bubbly and directed to the roof / pool terrace and would be contacted via 'Whatsapp' when the rooms were ready.
The roof / pool terrace had plenty of seating and sunbeds and has a small bar where you can order drinks and snacks. A very lovely lady called Sandra looked after us until we received our 'Whatsapp' message saying our rooms were ready. Upon arrival at receipt, the guy on reception said sorry the message was sent by mistake. We said with a smile that we think that deserved another free glass of bubbly each, to which the reply was, you need to speak to my colleague here, his colleague with a big smile on her face and in perfect English said 'Sorry I don't speak English' at which point they handed over the keys to our rooms. We think they have performed this double act a few times. It is really nice to see staff interact this way, it makes a big difference to our experience.
We stayed in rooms 224 (overlooked the breakfast area) & 225 (overlooked a small courtyard), which was an upgrade from the standard rooms to a room with a kitchenette. The rooms were on the larger size to those we are used to having along with a large walk in shower. There was plenty of hanging space and also came with a hairdryer and a digit safe (no extra cost). You also had bath robes and slippers.
The rooms were cleaned daily, beds made up and new towels were left every day.
The bar staff (Carlos) was very friendly and would bring the drinks over, even delivering them to the seating area near reception when the bar area was full.
The staff on the restaurant which served breakfast on the mornings and dinner in the evenings were exceptional. They work long hours, often doing both breakfast and evening dinner service. A special mention to Sandra and her daughter who looked after us really well.
The only negative (and its a small one) we have is that a couple of times the hotel was hosting an special event in the evening where locals were invited and it appeared no space was reserved for hotel guests in the bar or restaurant areas. Believe the hotel should, at all times cater for paying guests staying at the hotel.
Highly recommend this hotel and we will definitely be returning (hopefully next year 2025).

Our double room was two single beds pushed together which were fairly low to the ground. We appreciated that the hotel provided wash cloths, shampoo, and conditioner. There was lighting above each bed but another light above the storage area next to the closet would be an improvement. On the rooftop was a pool with lounge chairs, a hot tub, and a bar with views of the old city. The buffet breakfast was nice with a wide selection of fruits, cheeses, and breads along with a number of items (omelettes, crepes, etc.) that could be ordered from the kitchen. They had a happy hour (buy 1 get 1 free) in the bar between 6 and 7 pm Monday to Friday which was a pleasant surprise.

I highly recommend this hotel. From arriving to leaving we found all staff to be helpful and friendly. The hotel is quiet and located in a quiet street although a short walk from the shopping area, cathedral, restaurants and bars and a 10-15 minute stroll to the old town. Our bedroom was big, with a small kitchenette which was really useful for the fridge, making snacks and light lunches. The balcony, whilst small served it's purpose, when it was warm enough to sit out. The room was clean with a comfortable bed. The shower room was clean and the shower included overhead and hand held shower heads, with a good strong flow of water and even temperature. Breakfast was the usual standard cold continental stuff with a good range of fruit, and a hot cooked breakfast which was ok. However, a small range of foods can be ordered which are freshly cooked and well made. This included omelettes, poached eggs on toast, pancakes and 1 or 2 other items which I didn't try. We ate dinner in the restaurant twice. Food and service were very good, and prices comparable to other local restaurants. If staying in Funchal again, I would definitely stay here. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so pleasant

We have stayed at the Castanheiro several times (this was our 6th visit!) and we really enjoy the location, especially at Christmas. The quality of the food, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff and the facilities all add to make this a great holiday.
The rooms are a good size with modern furnishings and bathrooms and are immaculate. Bathrobes, slippers and pool towels provided, along with a kettle, tea & coffee. A bottle of complimentary water is provided and rooms have a mini bar. Balconies are quite compact, but adequate for 2 people to sit on to have a drink, or read. Seating also available in the room. We received an upgrade to a Junior suite, which was very unexpected, but appreciated as it meant we had a dedicated seating area, plus a proper double bed!
Hotel is very quiet despite it's very central location, with beautiful public areas, including a library. Iris bar is great for a drink during happy hour before going out for dinner, but it can be very quiet at other times. Service is good as the waiters come to you, take your order, and deliver the drinks with a few nibbles. Some nights there is live music in the Iris bar.
Views from the rooftop are outstanding, and the pool is great for swimming lengths with a jacuzzi on the upper level to relax in. Nice double sunloungers on the upper sun terrace. Small bar area on the rooftop that provides snacks, with a nice variety of seating. Hotel also has a beach club in the hotel zone which offers a large saltwater swimming pool, children's pool and direct access to the sea. Chairs and loungers available, with changing facilities. Nice bar area serving drinks and snacks. We walked to the Naval Beach Club, which took about 50 minutes from the hotel, although I am sure there is a local bus. Indoor spa area is very relaxing, with additional pool, sauna and Turkish bath. Breakfast is plentiful and self-service with a menu for cooked to order eggs. Tipographia restaurant is excellent quality and great value for money, with some good vegetarian options. When the weather is good you can dine outside, as inside can feel a bit soulless when it's not busy. Overall this is a fabulous hotel and we will return for our 7th stay!

They have a Gala Dinner on Christmas Eve, which has always been included within the cost of the stay, even though we were only B &B.
They request formal dress, but have always been ok with smart casual, preferably with jacket.
Done have not even had a jacket, but they were not turned away
We have always eaten out elsewhere on Christmas Day, but the standard menu will no doubt be available in the hotel.

Hello, if you have booked half board then the evening meal should be included, but as Gillian has said, the staff are very friendly, so just drop them an email. They normally respond very quickly. Enjoy your stay - it's a magical place at Christmas
