Stayed for 2nights on tour. Untrained staff, no idea of customer service. Phoned reception 4 times Re finding a power point, was told one was near the bedhead not true. Then they said they had been to my room 3 times ... when I had phoned their switch showed another room and they were saying that was my problem, power point was located under a recess on the desk. Asked for bottled water and was told there should be some in the room when I said there wasn't, the receptionist said I would have to pay for a bottle of water. Hotel confusing layout, lifts, but still had to use stairs, auto lighting in hallways and steps that were dangerous as they came on too late to show the way. Very cold atmosphere, no warmth or welcome.
First, the compliments: We had a beautiful view of the rooftops and bell tower. The front desk staff were pleasant. The location of EMAJ in Guimaraes was excellent. The room had a fridge and safe. Areas for improvement: The purple wallpapered basic room had an odd odor. The walls were extremely banged up. The breakfast was downstairs in a dark and dreary space. Of all the breakfasts we had in fourteen days in Portugal, it was by far, the poorest. The hotel did not feel like a boutique hotel. Would we stay again? No. We would look for another hotel in Guimaraes.
This was a super place to have a quick overnight, would have loved to stay longer, but just before starting the Camino it was lovely! Staff are friendly, the rooms are clean and breakfast is great. The room was a bit odd (if sharing w/someone) as there is no door to the bathroom which is pretty open, so a bit awkward. Other than that, all fine.
Make sure you check out what room you are getting when you book. The older rooms are of a good size but the rooms in the extension are very small, hardly enough room to open a suitcase. Cleanliness is also a issue. The bathroom is tired and in need of a good clean. Only one bedside lamp and the other one hanging off the wall. I’m sure there are better hotels in this town. When reading the good reviews on this site it is definitely from people who were given the bigger more spacious rooms. We were in a tour group and some where lucky enough to get the better rooms. Ours certainly was not one of those.
I rate this a 5 because the location is perfect (50 meters from the old town) and the breakfast is excellent for a boutique hotel. Above all, price/quality it's a very good deal. The rooms are modern but a bit outdated. Rooms without a view have ... no view. However, no noise at all.
