Hotel Pedra Antigua is about a 15 minute walk from the San Bento train station. If you are coming from Lisbon you have to change trains at Campagna to Sao Bento, which in included in your ticket. The walk is slightly uphill but doable. Steep stairs greet you as there is no lift. The reception staff were helpful and friendly, some with limited English. My wife liked the room which was like a cave with old stone walls, but new fittings. However internal walls are not very sound proof, we had some noise. Not a major drama and the beds are clean and comfortable. Not much room for luggage, but it is a good price, close to town and the breakfast had rolls, meat, cheese, pastries, eggs and cereal. Overall, a quirky budget hotel, great to come back to after a day out. They will also store your luggage if you go on a two day Douro river cruise (recommended, see review).…
Average hostel but late check in was available what is advantage. Small problem with communication with receptionist, speak only in Portuguese. Good located! Nice breakfast! Stay was in rainy, cold season and was quite cold in room as well because of leaky patio door. Greetings for one staff member from Poland!
Stayed here recently. Good points. Nice pillow and comfy bed. Breakfast bread, ham, cheese,oj. Location 20 min walk to river, 5 min from metro. Did sleep ok provided you left the fan on high to drown out people/traffic noise. Bad points. Our room was nothing like photos on website. Bathroom door wouldn't shut. Shower flooded floor every time. Electric toilet- never seen that before and scared the bejesus out of you every time. So so noisy. No where to put clothes as Apart from 2 beds, small table to put case on, 2 chairs and that was it. Room very very small. Could just about touch both sides of the room with your hands. Just stay somewhere else or spend a lot of time out of your room.
The first big plus for me was 24hr reception as we were arriving on a late flight. Access was gained by ringing a doorbell and some quite steep stairs. Our host spoke very good English and was amenable. The room was good with a reasonable amount of space, but lacked a wardrobe. Breakfast was good with supplies topped up regularly, but a little cramped at the servery. Bolhao is the nearest Metro station and about 400 metres up a gentle slope most of which is pedestrianised. There was, however, a lot of noise from the road outside
"We were on the top floor in the room with the nude lady painting, it faced the street but we were not kept awake at night, didnt see any of the other rooms, but equally wasnt woken up by other guests, the breakfast room was one floor down down but again no noise so perhaps top floor is the way to go?"Read full review
