Checked in early, parking immediately in front of this boutique hotel, and found the staff extraordinarily helpful and the checking-in process very simple. First floor room was very comfortable, with spotless marble bathroom, good water pressure and Wi-fi. Breakfast was very good for the price paid, with hot and cold selections. The building itself is more than 500 years old, and in a most central location close to the railway station and its huge shopping mall and to the Basilica, and a short stroll to restaurants, cafés and bars and the waterfront. Would definitely stay here again when any opportunity permits.

The hotel is right in the center of town, but it still was so quiet. We got an upper level room, and it was huge! Great bedding. Nice bath.
It is in a very old building (500 years maybe?), and we loved how they had converted it so tastefully into a hotel. The staff was very attentive and helpful.
We had a car. It was very simple to drop bags off there and then go park in garage next door.
Breakfast was very good. We also ate dinner there, which was delicious.

A very well located hotel below the railway station, at the top of town, in reasonable shape for an old hotel. We were upgraded to a lovely bigger room facing the front street as our first room had minimal to zero water pressure in the bathroom. Lovely room, period decor, and we slept well. Dinner they accommodated us for the vegan option, however hugely expensive for the quantity we received. Wonderful Maitre D, engaging and super friendly. Breakfast was super disappointing, and when we asked for soya milk, we were simply told we should have ordered it before, as they did not have. In a 4 star hotel ? Not good enough on that front. However we on balance enjoyed our Camino overnight stay at the hotel , in a non vegan or even vegetarian friendly town ;-)
Thank Edmund B

We stayed for two nights at the hotel which had very clean rooms and a great atmosphere. The buffet breakfast was very good and the dishes were regularly refreshed. The hotel is situated in the centre of the town and behind the railway station but the noise level was very low and we were never woken by any sounds. The hotel has very limited road parking outside with an underground car park adjacent to it. The car parking fee is 10 Euros/per day and a reduced rate is available form the hotel. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We would recommend this hotel.

The building hosting Casa Melo Alvim is AMAZING. Rich in history being one of the oldest buildings in Viana do Castelo. The location of the hotel really couldn't be better, sitting on top of the main street leading down to the river with all the shops and restaurants at a stone's throw. It's so close to the beautiful station house that you can practically fall there. The hotel is quiet even though it has a central location. You can't hear the trains at all so don't worry about that. If you have a street facing room you might hear some street noise. Given its central location noise is more than reasonable. If you like hard beds then this is the place for you. I have stayed in many hotels and this has to be in the top 3 "hard beds" category. The house itself is in excellent condition and lovingly refurbished. The furniture and amenities are dated but not worn (sort of stepping into a time capsule with a 16th century building, 90s phone and first generation "no name" small flat screens as TVs. But you don't go here to watch TV).

The wall sockets must have been placed with no concern for turning the building into a hotel. There are very few, almost all of them taken by lamps or TV. Most of them very hard to reach hidden underneath the bed. At least the floor underneath the bed was spotless for when you crawl under it to plug your charger in. There is persistent smell of old-school high-intensity cleaning chemicals in the room, but easy to air out.

Breakfast is sub-par. I expected a selection of local products and more made-from-scratch items, but all of it is regular supermarket selection. The staff was good, one staff member in particular (evening and night manager) was stand out, sorting everything I needed from room transfers, sightseeing and dinner suggestions to anything else I managed to throw at him. Always service with a caring smile.

Positives:
Location can't be beat
Fascinating historical building, lovingly refurbished
Super service-minded staff
Quiet given its central location

Negatives:
VERY hard beds
Breakfast selection
Dated amenities
Access to wall sockets
Smell of old school cleaning chemicals in the room
