We have stayed at 'The Athen's Gate'four times altogether, we would not choose anywhere else. The views are spectacular placed as it is between the 'Temple of Olympian Zeus' and the 'Acropolis' which at night is lit by soft golden lighting making dining on the rooftop terrace an unforgettable experience, with ancient history as a backdrop. Great for a romantic evening...

We stayed at the Athens Gate Hotel on October 6th to the 8th. We requested a room with a balcony facing the Acropolis and wow, did they ever deliver. The view from our balcony was truly amazing. The hotel is a 3 minute stroll to the heart of the Plaka with all it's great tavernas and shops and 10 minutes...

This hotel was slightly more expensive than we were originally wanting to pay, but we made the right decision staying here. It is located a block from the metro station and across the street from the Temple of Zeus. We had an outstanding view of the temple from our window, but we did hear some traffic noise at night. The...

We arrived at the Athens Gate Hotel on the first night of our first trip to Greece in mid September 2013. Arriving at the hotel was a gracious and great beginning to our trip. We arrived late and immediately took in our first view of the lighted Acropolis from AG's roof. It was breathtaking. My friend who's a travel agent...

Athens Gate Hotel is an excellent hotel in a great location. It is easy to walk to the main sites, e.g. Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, National Archeological Museum, and local Greek shops. The brunch has diverse offerings for a range of appetites. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would recommend finding out about garbage pickup days. We stayed on...

The establishment is obviously a self rated 4 star where a 2 1/2 star rating would be more appropriate. At AUD$140 a night one would expect a larger room and some sort of view other than a side street. There was a good range of television channels however the maximum sound was set too low therefore rendering it useless. perhaps...

We had a very good stay here overall, and I would warmly recommend the hotel. Excellent location near the Plaka and Acropolis museum. Very nice breakfast. Lovely roof terrace. I have only two caveats. Firstly, as the hotel is on a very noisy multi-lane road, do request a room on the rear side of the hotel, and get the hotel...

This recently updated, outstanding boutique hotel (about 90 rooms) is within walking distance of the most popular sights in Athens. Our room and all common areas (including lobby, sitting area with couches, chairs, bar, computers, free wi-fi in lobby area and on roof) were very clean and well-serviced. Great customer service (staff was friendly and always there to assist including...

Athens is a busy, sprawling city, and if you don't speak or read Greek, it's pretty intimidating to find your way around. We were 2 people traveling from Venice, and on our way to Santorini, with a 4 day visit in mind. Just being honest, we want the absolute best suites with views, regardless of price. However, I stay away...

Staying in Thissio / Makriyanni

Neighbourhood Profile
Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centrepiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.
