The InterContinental Athenaeum Athens, an IHG Hotel, offers spacious rooms that many guests find comfortable, despite widespread calls for updates and modernization. While the hotel boasts commendable cleanliness and a variety of dining options, some visitors express disappointment with dated decor and temporary amenity closures. The staff's service receives mixed reviews, with instances of both commendation and criticism.
Guests appreciate the central location, though it may require transport to reach key attractions. However, the perceived value for money is a concern, with mentions of high costs and additional fees.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Despite not located near the tourist areas, taxis are readily available and it is a convenient spot for pick-up/drop-off when you join organised tours.
We booked a "King Classic Club Lounge Access Acropolis View" and was upgraded to a suite upon check-in at the Club reception! Suite was perfect - clean, comfortable beds, spacious toilet and bath (only improvement is the shower door as it doesnt close fully and water drips on the floor outside the bathtub) and of course a spectacular view of the Parthenon from our own balcony.
Eleni and her colleagues at the club reception were very helpful - from booking our tour to Sounion and organizing a private car/driver for Delphi, to enabling a late check-out for us, to even ordering Starbucks via Wolt app (compared to the lobby concierge who was very unhelpful and a bit rude to us when we asked for help!)
Breakfast buffet is available at Cafe Zoe as well as club lounge and we opted for the cafe and there is a good range of standard breakfast fare with very attentive staff for coffee and clearing tables. Bonus is that it is open from 6:30 up to 11am!
Tip: Enrol in the IHG One Rewards when booking Intercontinental Hotels 👍👍

Dear marlo632, Thank you for staying at the Athenaeum InterContinental Athens and for writing such a wonderful review. Guest satisfaction is our primary concern and we are delighted to learn that your stay with us was an enjoyable one, enhanced by the high level of service provided by our Club InterContinental and Premiere staff. Moreover, that you particularly enjoyed the panoramic view of the Acropolis from your suite. We were sorry though to hear of the discomfort that you experienced in your suite with regards to the shower door. Our Maintenance department has already been informed in order to avoid a similar occurrence in the future. We have taken note of your comments about the service you received from our Concierge staff and would like to express our sincere apologies. Please rest assured that your comments will be shared with our team in order to ensure that a similar lapse will not reoccur. We truly thank you again for your feedback and look forward to welcoming you back on a future visit to Athens. Yours sincerely, Georgia Guest Service Centre

I stayed at Inter-Continental almost a week after the hotel opened for business in late August. I was impressed with the safety protocols this hotel has implemented. From contact less but still friendly check in to cleanliness in the rooms and disinfectant dispensers placed throughout the hotel, the visitor feels safe.
Breakfast is served downstairs in the lobby area. The pool is still open and so is the gym but distancing is being followed. In other words, every other lounge in the pool is available, so the six foot distance can be followed.
I strongly encourage you to visit Athens or most parts of Greece with a few exceptions, either for a short weekend or for a week, especially if you live in Europe or in a country where travel to and from Greece is allowed. I haven't seen anything so far in Greece that makes me feel worrisome or even scared. I didn't visit Greece to go clubbing and pack with others, but to enjoy the sea and sun, stay and eat in good establishments and relax. I noticed that almost everyone from the taxi driver to the waiter in the local coffee shop, they are all wearing their masks and do their best to meet the protocols.
All in all, a great hotel, good prices for this year at least, and a safe destination meeting all industry COVID-19 standards.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
We opted for a room on the Intercontinental Club floor which is on an upper floor so good views out - good choice. There is a seperate checkin looked after by helpful people. Breakfast, drinks and some evening food is included in the price so worth the extra.
Our room was on the side of the hotel looking towards the Parthenon but unfortunately there was a new building partly blocking the view. The room was generously sized and well equipped.
The hotel is a little way from the centre but there is a useful shuttle bus which goes to the edge of the Plaka.

I stayed 5 nights as a family
I booked through the hotel directly for 140 euro per night.
I requested a pool view and they gave me room 213 which u can see the pool partially
The check in was the worst part of my experience, the lady was a bit rude and did her best to give me the 213 room as if there was no other options.
After 42 minutes check in discussion, i decided to accept the 213 just because my family was really tired and kids need to sleep.
Later on, i discovered that the safe is not working and after so many phone calls, i decided to leave my passports at the hotel safe.
The fridge had a key and after it was closed, i couldn’t open it to get food for the kids over night.
I managed to open it following day and i also informed them the day of my arrival at night. They wanted to send the duty manager but it was late
They fixed the safe following day.
The table in the room had sharp edges, i managed to move it with the help of someone outside the room and stayed there till i notified them that it is not safe to leave such table blocking the corridor.
They removed it next day.
Breakfast is very good but they are under staffed, u will request tea or coffee and get serviced 10 minutes later. However they have smily faces and this is all what i need to enjoy my breakfast.
There is no kids pool and their is no life guard!! U swim at your own risk.
There was another very shocking incidence happened on the breakfast and i reported it to the guest relation. Few hours later, the hotel management sent us a complimentary plate of fruits and bottle of water which i really appreciate.
I really wish my check in experience was better and the team leader who checked me - was not rude.

The hotel is in a great central location within reasonable walking distance from the main attractions.
The room I was given was a smoking room and none of us smoke so we didn't request it. Not a huge issue but the smoke smell in the room was overpowering. I called to report it expecting a change of rooms but I was offered to spray the room instead.
The rooms are also a bit outdated and need an update.
The room was fitted to accommodate 4 people, yet the amenities provided were only for two despite repeatedly asking.
Housekeeping staff were not very thorough and left empty boxes and glasses in the room without replacing/cleaning.

The hotel is located just outside the city centre and this means it is in a quiet neighbourhood. The free shuttle to the main square is just fine and helpful on hot days. The lobby (and other areas) are decorated with fine art collected by the owner and if you ask, guestrelations has some printed information on all the pieces, very informative.
We were staying in a clubroom and we enjoyed the personal and very friendly service of the team there. They make you feel very welcome and go out of their way in order to get you any information or booking you might require.
There is an ATM on the ground floor, busstops are just 2 mins walk away and taxis are always readily available.
All features from beds to bathrooms are what you would expect in an Interconti and the same goes for the concierge, reception and all staff.
Athens surprised us with a wonderful mix of citylife, ancient buildings and modern beachclubs. If we go back to Athens the Interconti is where we will go.

Situated in the centre of town Eur50 in a taxi from airport . Shame about the surrounding streets which appear very rundown , closed up and a huge amount of graffiti . However the graffiti is not limited to this area .
Couldn’t fault the hotel for delivering excellent service under COVID restrictions . Masks required in the public areas of the hotel including the restaurant at the pool
Reception staff very efficient and and recognition for IHG a card status
Upgraded room offered which was happily accepted .
Breakfast buffet restaurant with disposable gloves provided for guest use to help themselves from the buffet .Only one restaurant available to eat in the evening combining club guests and others . As there is no club lounge open at the moment , a restricted Club menu and courtesy drinks were offered when dining which suited us fine . Reception bar also extended club benefits
Fantastic views over Athens from this 10th floor indoor/outdoor restaurant and bar .
Swimming pool with a good number of sun loungers /umbrellas though it did get very busy during the afternoon
A very good standard of hotel , ideally placed for using as a base for touring Athens . We walked everywhere but taxis are available from the hotel . About 35 min walk to the Acropolis

We stayed in the IC Athens for three nights, on our way back from an island trip. As we were coming through Athens airport we decided to see some of the sights and the IC turned out to be ideally located, within easy and safe walking distance from where all the action is (the old town and the attractions).
The hotel is extremely clean, spacious and welcoming. The staff were friendly and attentive, especially the waiting staff. The hotel is a little dated, however, very functional. A hotel of a certain era!
Our room was spacious and a great place to spend a few days, enabling you to relax and unwind after a day walking around. We had a king bed, which was extremely comfortable with crisp linen and comfortable pillows. The room had a comfortable sofa and easy chair, with a large desk if work had to be attended to. There were full C&T making facilities and a mini bar with extra refreshments if you required it.
The bathroom was large and well appointed, if a little dated, with a shower over bath and a bidet, things that you do not see these days but it did the job. The soaps and shampoos were of a nice quality and in plenty of supply. The towels were also of fine quality and size.
We ate our first meal in the Bistro when we arrived and the food quality was good and of great value, we also had a bottle of the house red that was extremely palatable and of good value accounting for the level of hotel.
We had a drink in the bar on two evenings and the service could not be faulted.
This is a comfortable, relaxing and clean hotel that is not showing any signs of wear and tear, albeit a little dated in style. We would stay here again if coming to Athens.

In my opinion this enhanced our 4-night stay at the IC, Athens. We booked using points, status was recognised as Spire Ambassador and we were charged a very reasonable upgrade fee for a very comfortable Club acropolis view room. The club lounge being closed shouldn't put visitors off, because the soft drinks and daytime snacks are served by the pool which is convenient and the evening drinks are at the Premier bar on the rooftop terrace. This is a major bonus as you are in the open and able to watch the sunset and the evening light on the Acropolis. The complimentary drinks include a palatable champagne (Philip de Nanthueil) and starter size servings from the restaurant, like delicious moussaka and Greek salad. The staff in the hotel are all friendly and attentive, but we would like to particularly commend the entire Premier team of staff who looked after us in the early evenings, especially Spyros, Monika & Alexis.
The two concierge gentlemen were very helpful in finding us tables at busy restaurants and giving us information about covid tests. The gym was spacious & well equipped and the ground floor pool lovely for a swim and sunbathing. The only minor issues were the Aircon at breakfast was uncomfortably cold and it seemed the staff couldn't control it although expressed sympathy. There was also some traffic noise just by the pool although only at busy times. The shuttle bus was not running although taxi to sight in the city centre were fast and cost 4-8 euros each way
I recommend a stay at this very good hotel and upgrade to the Club level if possible.

Paid the price difference for an upgrade to the club floor 70ish euro extra per night. Room was overall fine, lived up to a five star standard.
Club floor lounge was okish, decoration is dated and food is a mid range 3 star quality. Breakfast buffet lack of fresh fruits besides your normal apples, bananas and oranges there is nothing more. Don’t expect much from afternoon tea and evening canapés , the best you ll get out of it probably is couple chicken wings and skewers. Nothing fancy.
Staff overall are very polite, but maybe it is due to a culture difference, conversation often becomes too awkward. pins don’t drop unless you really say it. For example, I had an extreme difficult to take a bath in the room as the trap doesn’t work. Water keeps leaking through and i had to keep topping it up along with me keeping topping up bath salt I uses to treat my eczema. I finally said it at check out, instead of getting an apology, I got a smile and response of thanks for letting me know. I didn’t want to elaborate any more in case i get angry and upset over it.
This hotel offers free shuttle to athens city center. Once you are in the city center, you can pretty much leg to majority of the attractions. The acropolis probably is the furthest, 25mins walk. However taking a taxi over from hotel probably is at 7-8 euro only.
Problem with above is that the club floor staffs do not mention any of it, rather they sell you the hop on and off bus service which is at 20 euro pps. And if you want to pay by card there is a surcharge on it. So off i spent the 40 euro on it. I used the service twice only among the entire 48 hours. Absolutely waste of money very poor recommendation.
Looping back to the pin doesn’t drop bit, one of the club floor staff asked me how was the hop on and off bus, I said, it was ok nothing much. Again, staff throw on a big smile and replies that’s good. I just keep on walking, no need to explain.
What i got overall is, I paid a lot to buy the extras. Do i feel they are worth the money, probably not.
Oh did i mention i was a platinum elite and now a gold elite.

No. But public transportation is easy and close. Most attractions are in walking distance of each other but that's subject to your mobility.
What everyone is saying Club rooms are on the 8th and 9th Floor with access to an amazing club room open all day serving breakfast snacks afternoon tea alcohol and delicious food in the evening. A stunning terrace with great views of the Acropolis.
I go down the block to eat. I had lunch on the main floor and it was 95 dollars. I decided not to eat there anymore. This a great hotel.
Outdoor swimming pool and you'll need to contact the reception/concierge to book the spa. Very nice staff!
