The dramatic views of the Venetian fortress at the old city harbor of Heraklion, and the wonder-filled waves of the Cretan Sea, are among the most photographed tourist attractions on Crete island. Not many visitors can enjoy the full panoramic grandeur of these contemplative landscapes, the way our guests at Lato Boutique Hotel can.Standing for more than 35 years above the marina, our hotel operates 365 days a year without interruptions. Famous for authentic Cretan hospitality, Lato Boutique Hotel is the most welcoming establishment in this part of the city, a magnet for romantic couples, but also for families, and business travelers. Being at the center of the old Heraklion town, the peaceful and colorful central market is only a few steps away. The museums, the Venetian harbor with the fishing boats and the yacht marina, the parks, the gardens, the city cafes and all ancient Heraklion lays at the foot of our front doorstep, your front doorstep.

Lato is not a 4-star hotel. It is barely a 3 star, but maybe for Crete, it would qualify for 3 stars. During our three nights, there were five different desk staff, but only one person on duty at a time. All but one of the staff was rude and unhelpful. I booked a “superior room sea view” but did not get anything like the room pictured on the website. The room was tiny and had no room for a full-size club chair as shown in the photo. When my husband asked for two extra pillows due to his acid reflux issue, the desk manager argued with him about needing more pillows. My husband had to insist. The window latch in the bathroom would not open, so a steamy room could not be avoided. The room safe code had not been cleared from the previous guest, so we could not use it. Immediately after checking in, I reported that and was told the desk manager would “be right up.” An hour later, no one had come up. I asked again and was angrily told there was no backup staff and I would have to wait. After almost two hours, I demanded, in person, that someone clear the safe code. The desk manager yelled at me (I am 65, btw) and said there was nothing wrong with the safe and I just didn’t know how to operate it. He grabbed a seemingly random guy from the front walk and asked him to stand by the desk until he returned. As I had said, the safe was not operational, he cleared the code, said nothing - no apology- and left the room. There was no complimentary water provided. One night when too late to go out and buy water, I was directed to go buy water from the hotel restaurant. The man on duty there said it was €2. When I went to do the same the next night, the woman on duty at the restaurant said it was free. Hmm. The breakfast was not great. The eggs were powdered and reconstituted. The meat was greasy and undercooked. The cake was crumbly dry and flavorless. Other elements were fine. How this place gets some good reviews is a mystery. It is in a gritty, dirty part of Heraklion. Pay a little more if you have to and don’t let a place like this ruin part of your trip.

Traveling to Heraklion for business quite often I have tried a few hotels in the past and now I have found my hotel for my trips to Heraklion . I am so staying again at Lato ! Very friendly staff , very good breakfast, parking available close by . Quiet and close to the city center , also very clean . The rooms are simple but modern and practical offering everything you would need . As said before not trying other hotels , this will be my choice for all my next trips !

+ Very clean room, with little outside terrace. + TV, WiFi, and excellent bathroom. + Friendly staff. + Breakfast buffet was large + Close to harbour, intercity bus station and ferry port. - Free water one day and then not replaced after room was cleaned. - TV seemed to only have one English channel

Spent 3 nights in a harbour view room and so able to see sunrise, sunset and comings and goings of the ferries etc. Quite spacious and bright. Buffet breakfast had a good choice. Easy walk to Heraklion Museum (highly recommended before visiting Knosos Palace), the main town and bus (No 2) stop to Knosos as well as the Venetian harbour. Bazaar supermarket nearby was very well stocked.

The suite was excellent. Ample storage, very comfortable bed. Wonderful view of the old harbour and the sea. Excellent heating, easily adjustable. Daily cleaning was perfect. My only criticism of the room is that I could have done with a brighter light for reading. At my age I need it. The staff were friendly and caring, particularly when I was briefly unwell. The breakfasts were phenomenal! For dinner the restaurant was not organised for a long stay: there was a limited and unchanging menu, but the service and food were excellent.

I have stayed at Lato a number of times, and have brought my study tour groups over the years. We appreciate how everyone at Lato offers us Greek style hospitality, the rooms--beds, baths, etc. are comfortable, the breakfast service is tops, and everyone says they hope to return some day. For me, Lato is my "home away from home" on Crete!

What a great find. A modern, comfortable, clean hotel, with fabulously helpful staff and excellent food. We arrived late and were able to get a great late dinner and the breakfast the following morning was exceptional. Highly recommended, thank you for making our first night in Crete such a pleasure.

Look, I have traveled all over the world, but this has been by far the most delicious food I have ever had. The friendly and welcoming staff at the Lato Boutique Hotel also added to this 'taste-orgasm'. I will most definitely visit Heraklion again, just to experience this all over again! Thank you! Overlooking the old Venetian harbour and castle, the Lato Boutique Hotel is perfectly placed to look out over the sea and an easy walk into the centre of Heraklion. The rooftop Herbs restaurant serves great food and is a wonderful place to relax and watch the evening light turn into dark, with the fortress and harbour become all lit up. The staff were very attentive, friendly and helpful. A highly recommended hotel as a base for exploring the whole of Western Crete with its mountainous terrain and ancient Minoan sites.

Have stayed there many times through the years- my returning is already a recommendation- there are many hotels in Heraklion, but I do not feel any need to change. Great location, very helpful and friendly staff, good breakfast, wonderful rooftop restaurant.
