Rooms are warm and clean in very simple Scandinavian style. Cool view from windows.
Multiple stuff in kitchen makes it way much easier with cooking.
Also, it's located closely to local supermarkets (even 24h one!) and gas station what is actually a really cool when tripping around Iceland.

We stayed in a 3 pax room with private bathroom. Self check-in is very easy to do and comfortable. Hostel is very quiet and it was clean. I expected to get a room with a view but well, not always lucky. Pretty close to the center. I would recommend.

We recently stayed for 3 nights and had mixed feelings about our stay:

Pros:
Location- we liked being outside the main part of the city. It’s close to a Bonus (better value than the supermarket directly opposite the hostel) and tours picked up directly from Oddsson rather than having to walk to a bus stop

Clean- we had a private room. It was basic but clean. Bed was really comfy. Bathrooms were also clean

Cons:
Staff- you can’t rely on the staff at reception to give you a friendly welcome or advise the best things to do in and around Reykjavík

Kitchen- could do with a few more appliances. Every evening we had to wait quite a while to use the one kettle and one microwave

All in all, it definitely wasn’t a terrible experience but not sure we’d stay at Oddsson again.

Hard to locate as name of hostel is not on the old building which is supposed to be a school (now haunted). It's next to Subway.
Bare cold room with all pipes exposed, old furniture or nails taken off walls but not plastered up, lots of weird holes on ceiling. No TV in room or anywhere. Shower room has no door so water splashes out into toilet. No housekeeping or reception. Towels not changed until we managed to catch housekeeping lady and asked for it. Other than that nothing is done. Rubbish is not removed till check out (a week stay) and only given 2 toilet rolls. No one to ask anything or request for anything. Poorly run hostel. Kitchen is ok with old scratched pots, mismatched plates/bowls and cutlery though dirty dishes left in sink by not sure who for days til housekeeper comes in (not sure how frequent). There are however 3 big tables for guests.

Asked for a change of room through email but no response.

Beds in room have different frames but looked Ikea. Curtains are dirty and looked like bed covers sewn into curtains (small pieces). Toilet window has no window covering so someone outside staircase could look into toilet. Looked more like a prison cell frankly. The pictures online were probably taken years ago.

Need a car as far from city centre though 3 supermarkets are within 3 min driving.
Pros - heater, hot shower and internet worked well. Car park (uncovered) outside hostel is free but limited lots and very slippery when snowed.

No soap and most people have to pay extra for towels. Bring your own.

We have stayed in many hostels all over the world and this looked like an abandoned building with owners who only want to run it with minimal cost rather than a business they can be proud of. For the price paid it's not value for money.

Towels are charged extra, inadequate refrigerators, limited crockery and no cups, one kettle for entire hostel. No games, little information resources, communal TV seems to be removed. Overpriced thinking of alternates. Cold and unfriendly including decorations. Positives are clean, was quiet and location is reasonable with some good views and easy parking.. Subway and pizza nearby as are supermarkets. Bakery great.

I would rate this 0 stars if I could. We thought the relatively good reviews would ensure that we would have a good stay. We stayed the last leg of our trip for 2 nights. Sure, it's cheap. But what you save in money, you lose in everything else. This place is like a crack den. It's worse than jail! The room pictures are misleading and not at all what they appear to be. The floors are hard concrete. The room has nothing but a hard, uncomfortable twin size mattress and a wire coat rack. Not a lamp, not a bedside table, not a rug, not a wall decor. Not a d@mn thing. We never felt safe here. The hallway isn't well lit. Neither is the stairwell. Check-in was difficult because it was self check in, but no information arrived that allowed us to do it. We had to contact someone and he gave us attitude. We often camp outdoors in the wilderness, braving animals, bugs, dirt, and cold. I would take that over this place any day. Stay away, spend the extra bucks elsewhere. Location is ok, but the hostel is on the outskirts of the area.

Their site has changed since we stayed there in October 2019. Pictures posted do not show how the property actually looked. The lounge area at the time was full of furniture and production equipment....no access. Bathrooms were not kept clean. Room was worse than basic....as I mentioned....the site was an illusion to what you actually got.

So the reason I’m conflicted is a couple reasons however the management did their best to rectify the situation. Most of the staff if not all were super friendly and helpful, the exception was the check in nightmare from hell.
Arrived at 5am after flying all night from overseas (very weary) to a very rude person who told me there was absolutely no available room for early checkin and no way I could even sit in the lobby; even if I did have a reservation.

I don’t usually complain but it was the worst ever I had been treated, manager/owner bought my breakfast the next morning and even offered more. Thank you management for making it right.

I would’ve been happier had I upgraded to a hotel room instead of the hostel room but in the long run it all worked. Super convenient location across the street from grocery store. Bakery and small cafe inside, and fantastic restaurants all within walking distance, not to mention you are right on the water.

Great backpacking hostel, rooms are different from the hotel . If I would’ve upgraded to the hotel room this would be a better rating but I couldn’t justify the difference in price.

The hotel overall was clean and adequate (we stayed in a regular room w/ a bathroom attached) but our experience started out very poorly with a night clerk who was extremely rude. We arrived about 6:00 a.m. after traveling all night. Had to ring the bell several times to get him to open the doors. He promptly told us that we could leave our bags but then had to leave the hotel. It was -2 degrees C outside and blowing like crazy. We were in Iceland for the first time, had no idea where we could go to get out of the weather. The night clerk told us since it was Sunday, there wasn't anything open, and that this was a problem for "us people who arrive so early in the morning." Check in isn't until 3:00 p.m., so we had quite a bit of time on our hands!

We eventually (after daylight) walked around and found a very interesting Saga (Viking) Museum just down the street and an equally interesting exhibit hall on the Northern Lights.

The rest of the stay was fine, the hotel is basic, but clean and the rest of the staff were friendly and accommodating.

We will be going back to Iceland in June, but will NOT be staying at the Oddsson!

Definitely caters to young (high school or college age) clientele.

Oddsson was reasonably priced as we effectively got three nights for the price of two. However, the main reason we chose to stay was because of the bar and restaurant that was advertised on site. When we arrived both the restaurant and bar were closed indefinitely (I personally feel that we should have been told prior to arrival). Additionally, the website highlighted the availability of a hot tub on the roof terrace - again this was out of order. The beds were comfortable and the shared bathrooms were also very clean. All in all an okay stay but didn't really live up to the expectations that were promised.

how to get to your hostel from the airport?
Answer from Sunshine1890

From Reykjavik Airport, you go to the Flybus desk and bus a Flybus Plus Ticket to Reykjavik. It’s cheaper to book a return, so I got a return ticket for 5000 Krona. The Flybus waits for you just outside the airport, and they run approximately every half an hour. You tell the driver which hotel you are going to and they mark it on their list for a stop off for you, so the Flybus delivers you right to the front door of your hotel! If you are in the centre of Reykjavik on smaller roads, they sometimes transfer you onto a mini-bus at the main bus terminal. They separate buses by colors. I believe oddson was blue. Check the color of the bus before jumping in. Good luck
