Didnt stay at the hostel but did use the 'bunk bar' during the 4 hours of happy hour, everything is two for one, coffee, beer and other alcoholic drinks. The bar could really capitalise on this trade but dont, which is a shame, they had an outside seating area at the back which was not used. The bar is very small and many of the occupants were possibly hostel guests who had 'taken over' the bar with a mass of electrical equipment, playstations, laptops, ipads galore which take up a lot of room in an already cramped space. Maybe the management need to look at using the bar - as a bar - not as a 'lounge extension'. Perfectly located right in the heart of the pedestrianized zone.

Let's get one thing straight, this place does not have free WiFi as it advertises. It has WiFi in the cafe and in the common area of the main building, not in the rooms, particularly the rooms out back, which is where you will be staying if you book a private room. For international travelers, I don't think they realize how much of a pain this is. Not only are you struggling to adjust to a sleep schedule, but you wake up a ton at inconvenient times (i.e. 4am) because of the different hours for day light on top of everything. Have fun getting dressed and sitting in a stuffy room to kill the time.

The pros: Great location, friendly staff, clean room and clean bathroom.

The cons: No wifi, no laundry, a kitchen that we found dirty with absolutely crap cookware (you guys seriously can't spend 100 bucks on some decent pans and a working toaster?) and these really old locks on the doors which are ridiculous to deal with. They're those old skeleton keys, which means if two of you are traveling together, and one of you wants to nap, you either have to leave the door open or lock that person in and they'll have no way of getting out. I mean come on, this is standard stuff, put a regular lock on the door. It's 2015.

What makes all of the little things so aggravating is that the bar and restaurant downstairs does quite well, and these would be very small cost upgrades. Doesn't seem like they care though.

The hostel was comfortable enough and like any hostel, wear ear plugs and eye masks. Overall the staff were really helpful and very obliging. Unfortunately they were majorly understaffed and the staff who were on shift handled our many woes calmly and professionally, so full credit to the staff. We had door handles fall off, key cards that didn't work, loo paper that ran out, more door handles that wanted to fall off and so on............and so.......MANAGEMENT needed to follow through with what the staff had organised as far as reparations etc.
The quarters were clean as were the toilets and showers.
The food looked awesome although we didn't eat there and I think we hit happy hour and drank the most delicious pale ale ever!
The hostel is centrally located, so within walking distance of anything you could possible want.
Don't forget to bring extra cash for bedding and towels.

The location of this hostel is ideal. Unfortunately nothing else was. It was dirty, loud, disorganised and staff were unhelpful. Due to system errors on their part I was moved twice, once without notice, so I came back late one night after a day out to find my stuff had been removed from the room and put into storage. They made me move a second time, again due to their error and initially insisted I check out at 11 and come back to check in at 2. It was a joke. I would not recommend it. Despite much hostelling over the years this has been the worst I've ever visited.

Stayed here in July with my father and sister on a dive trip.

Don't get me wrong the place is clean enough, the staff are nice but the place is just run like a disaster.

We booked 4 nights a month in advance. When we arrived they told us there had been a problem and we'd have to move on our last night.

At the last minute my dad decided to join us on our trip so he booked in to one of the dorms.

First off they don't include duvets for the dorm rooms. You have to rent those.

Next We came home our second night and they'd taken all his stuff and said he had to move room.

The next day we got up and they said he'd have to move again the next day. He took all his stuff. We took all our stuff and then when they gave us our room it was the same as the room they'd moved him out of.

The day we checked out there was some guy screaming and roaring up and down the halls on drugs.

The place is a disaster.

Excellent place & wanted to spread the word. Was recently in Reykjavik w/my two best friends. While we did not stay here, we did utilize their front desk staff in setting up excursions we took in Iceland while there. Staff was EXTREMELY knowledgeable & helpful. They even called Flybus For us to set up our pick-ups to the main airport the day before we flew out. To the left side is their bar called the Bunk House. GREAT happy hour from 1600-2000. And their popularity as a magnet or "go-to" spot didn't end at 8pm. Crowd is a good mix of all kinds of locals/travelers. Bartenders are fun/attentive. I highly recommend you grab a drink here.

Just a quick review to say we booked a double bedroom with shared bathroom booked it 2 months in advance and paid a £25 deposit. Arrived at hostel handed over our paperwork and each paid the remaining balance for the room, only then were we told our room was not available due to redecorating so we would have to have a dorm room (which is cheaper). Due to the redecorating which was underway the main staircase was not in order aswell so we were forced to walk up a fire escape outside in the rain with our suitcases which was totally unsafe. Room was awful this was not a backpacking holiday so we did not want to bunk beds! Spoke to guy on reception who we must say was very helpful in the end they offered us free linen (which is about £30 each for your stay!!) and free breakfast plus a refund for the price difference but we chose not to stay there. We were given a full refund and the guy on reception rang another hostel and got us a double bedroom shared bathroom there which was more expensive but was AMAZING. Staying in iceland? Stay at KEX HOSTEL you will not regret it.

They charge you 12€ extra for a blanket. I brought my own sheets, but that was not enough. They charge 1€ more than they show on booking.com "It is the fault of the site". The dorm is above a noisy bar with a door that slams back with every guest getting in or out. Many guests in the dorm snore, due to the use of alcohol in the area. Small kitchen, bad ambiance. Some of the staff are rude.

The staff seemed very knowledgeable about everything.
The hostel however is on Laugavegur and my room faced onto a smoking area of a bar and was extremely loud.
When I checked in my key was put into an envelope with all the information about the room and hostel printed on it which was very handy to have.
The toilet I used was small and not so clean.
They also have a secured area to keep my luggage after I checked out which was free.
This would be a perfect place to stay if you are wanting to enjoy the nightlife in downtown reykjavik as they are situated on top of quite a popular bar.

This hotel is very well located not doubt about it and it wasnt particulary noisy the Sunday day I had to be there. The staff was not particulary friendly but it was ok.
The bad thing is the price, I paid 7000 crowns for a 4 beds dormitory with no blankets, no lockers inside the room, no breakfast.
And it's not true as they answer that they are the cheapest option in the city because for 7100 you can have the same room with blankets in BI47 while the blankets in there costs 1090 crowns which is ABUSIVELY EXPENSIVE, it's true that most icelandic hostels charge that, but that only means that most of hostels charge abusively a lot for the rent of something so basic like a blanket.

Hi Sophie. I think you may be directing your question the wrong way. We have no family rooms. Only double rooms with shared bathroom and dormitories for either 4, 6 or 8 people.
