I loved staying in the wooden cabins here! The drive up took a while because weather was bad. I thought it's worth it. My friend preferred to have a shower in the cabin, but I didn't mind the ablution blocks - which were clean and had nice hot water. I only wished we could have stayed longer than just one...

After the long drive in to the valley along the gravel road in the dark, we arrived at the campsite and found our cabin. It was compact but clean and comfortable - fine for my husband and I with our son and his girlfriend staying overnight. It was great to wake up the next morning to see the valley in...

My friend and I went here on our first night during a 5 day tour around the West of Iceland. The views were absolutely amazing during the drive in. In a 2wd it was a tiny bit scary driving in. The road is not as well maintained(in early June) as they write on the website. Since I'm used to gravel...

We drove here to camp for the night. It takes about an hour from the main road, but is a very scenic drive. I'm not experienced with driving rough terrain and I was able to navigate the pot holes in a 2wd - take it slow, beep your horn on blind corners and keep it in a low gear. The...

booked a cabin, but ended up staying another night in our tent as no cabins available - so book cabin in advance. Cabin is basic but comfy and met our needs. Camping ground was really good with the cave, but weather warm and dry so we didn't need to use the cave. The road wasn't a problem for me as...

If you have a good car you should really go to Thakgil and stay for the night. It´s really breathtaking and amazing view but the drive there was really tricky! Drive carefully and maybe put the best driver in front ;) Sleept in our campinvan at the campground and found it to be such a great experience to our trip...

Myself and 2 friends loved our night in Thakgil. However, the drive in and out is NOT for the faint of heart. We were in a tiny, rented car and, as the driver, I found it extremely nerve wracking and very difficult. I would not attempt the drive in a small car in wet/rainy or snowy condtions. However, the scenery...

There road is difficult. 14km of an E road and our car was not 4x4. Worth the drive. You feel you are off the beaten track. We camped and had the privilege of spotting northern lights. Great hiking nearby. Would definitely recommend

14 km north of the ring road in Vik. Must have "F" road rated vehicle. 14 km of driving on another planet! Really, really cool terrain. Campground stunning. We stayed in a cabin, which was ideal, since it rains a little most days in iceland. Very helpful onsite staff. Took an awesome 7 mile hike to the nearby glacier: You...

Having seen some last minutes photos of Thakgil, we decided to spend a day there and were totally delighted with this hidden gem. The road to the campsite from the highway is more suited for 4x4 drives but the sights are stunning on the way. It is located amidst the valley and has a lovely cave to have meals in....
