AX The Palace is frequently commended for its spacious rooms that boast large beds and impressive views, although some guests note a shortfall in amenities and dated decor. While the hotel's atmosphere and tasteful design earn praise, the vibrancy is sometimes questioned. The amenities, including pools and dining options, receive high marks for quality, and the staff's attentive service is often highlighted.
Its location near key transport links is appreciated, although the uphill return from the seafront can be a challenge. Opinions on value vary, with some concerns over meal pricing. Cleanliness is uniformly celebrated, with the hotel being described as immaculate.

Detailed Reviews
We have stayed previously at The Place in April 2019 and have just returned from staying the first week in January 2020 and I would say it was even better than our previous stay. This time we booked a Junior Suite (directly with the hotel, not using a travel agent this time) which was on the 7th floor with excellent views over Valletta. The hotel also provided, as part of the booking, a taxi to and from the airport, and also a meal at TemptAsian (see separate review).
We spent a good deal of time sitting, eating and drinking in the Talk Of Town bar both in the afternoons and also in the evenings. We particularly enjoyed the Italian meat platter and also the cheese platters with a bottle wine (which we had a couple of times). I would especially like to mention that the staff in the bar are all excellent without exception. They really are first rate, both in terms of service and also just in general.
On the subject of the hotel’s staff, I’d also say that the room servicing/cleaning staff are also incredibly efficient. Often we would not leave our room until late morning/lunch time, but the room was always serviced, without fail, by the time we returned mid to late afternoon.
We spent some time (as we did last time) talking to Thomas the concierge (although he wasn’t there that often this time as before, mainly because I think at this time of year, the hotel, like most others, is not as busy as it would be later on in the year). He’s very welcoming and full of information.
The other excellent point about The Palace is its location; it’s a 5 minute walk to Sliema waterfront where you can hop on the ferry to Valletta (which is much quicker than using the bus). Alternatively, you can walk in the opposite direction and be in Balluta Bay and St Julians in around 15 minutes.
To conclude, we really enjoyed our holiday in Malta (7th time we have been) and also we really enjoyed staying at The Palace.

The Palace is a large smart hotel at pretty much the highest point in Sliema. It interconnects with the neighbouring Palace hotel in the same ownership and you can use the facilities in both. It is a smart hotel with a lot of business travelers as well as tourists.
We spend 3 nights here on a short winter break in a Superior sea view room with a small balcony on the 5th floor. It was a large and well equipped room with views across the harbour to Valletta and out to the sea. There was complimentary water and tea and coffee as well as bath robes.
There is an small indoor pool and sauna/stream room and a rooftop infinity pool as well as a fully equipped fitness suite. We also used the in hotel spa which we found very reasonably priced and very good.
The hotel is well situated for all Sliema restaurants and the ferry and buses although being at the top of Sliema it is uphill to get back from everywhere.
Breakfast was okay although not quite 5 star in our opinion, particularly the hot station.
We didn't eat in the restaurants or use the bar which we though lacking in atmosphere compared to other places nearby
Ever though it was out of season the price was excellent value for the quality in our view

So this was my first time travelling since covid earlier in the year and I was hugely excited given I was a frequent traveller before. I was also curious to see how hotels were adapting under the current situation. I have zero criticisms for AX. My room was completey spotless. The organisation for the breakfast given it was a buffet setup should be used as an example on how to get it right for others reopening. All food served by masked and gloved staff with a one way system in place, but you could easily see all the choices still. The reception was warm and welcoming even if staff are masked, you have the sanitiser & notices everywhere - they're all still making it feel fun and informal even with all the reminders of what we're currently dealing with. As a side note WOW that rooftop. The photos don't do this justice & it was the photos that drew me in!! The terrace is way larger than you realise so you can pick loungers in the shade, away from the pool or soak up the vitamin D. The pool itself was spotless and staff were on hand to thoroughly clean down any loungers once people left them, they then fold them down so you immediately know they've been cleaned. The bar service is like being at your local, they're so friendly. Plus happy hour with this view is always going to be a winner!

When we saw our superior room on the eighth floor we were thrilled with the view, the oversized comfortable bed, the large bath room with bath, walk in shower and everything you could wish for in toiletries. The towels were soft and white and we had towelling robes, a convenient bonus. We found the fridge and coffee making facilities tucked round the corner where we chilled our water, provided every day. The Temptation restaurant offered wonderful views, food and service. Nothing was too much trouble for the lovely staff. Although we dined out occasionally, we paricularly enjoyed eating on the terrace of the hotel's Talk of the Town after enjoying a cocktail or two during happy hour. Even though the bar/restaurant was busy the service was impressive especially from Lawrence who had been there several years and spoke highly of the hotel management. The food was excellent and we particularly enjoyed the steak, salmon and tacos. We used the outside infinity pool nearly every day even though it was very cold! The area was beautiful and spotless but the beds were arranged in straight rows and you were either in complete sun or total shade! The service once again was friendly and efficient and we thought Jake, who is training to be a pilot, was attentive and helpful. The only sour note of the holiday was caused by the sparkling water they served at a price of 4. 50 € a bottle. It had a best before date of February 2022 and we were served it in June. The young woman I pointed this out to, while lovely and reassuring, saying she drank it herself, basically dismissed my concerns. I notice a man refusing to pay for it a few days later but they continued to serve it after this! Nevertheless, this was a minor blip in a fantastic holiday, made so by the exceptional and friendly staff from reception, housekeeping, porters as well as the staff who waited on us. They all had a smile and a greeting. For us it was the staff who mad our holiday superb.

Just on our way home from a 4 night stay at The Palace. First up, anyone worried about covid restrictions or administration please don’t be. Airports have loads of staff to help and check so it’s actually quicker than normal. We travelled with easyjet and they provided private taxi transfers for everyone.
The hotel is about 15mins from the airport. Check in wasn’t possible until 3pm but we dropped our bags at reception and had use of all facilities whilst we waited.
We had a double superior on the 8th floor. The room was massive, with a large balcony facing Valletta offering the best view on the island. Bed was comfy, separate shower and bath, his and hers sinks, two TVs ( though mostly news channels). Small fridge in the room and a small bottle of water each each day. Not sure why the wardrobe had a knocker or there was a phone next to the toilet but…
The pool area is nice, but busy. For a 5 star I’d expect exclusive use, however it’s shared with The Victoria hotel and open to the public for a fee. This meant you were often left searching for a sun bed. Bar prices were also about double what you’d pay outside the hotel, but the cocktails were strong so swings and roundabouts. The pool isn’t big enough for the number that used it, but did offer a cooling dip with great views. ( I say perfect, my wife would say a little cold).
The breakfast was good with assisted buffet. Very covid safe but not an inconvenience. We ate at TemptAsian, one of the two rooftop restaurants which was very very good. ( if a cheesy name) and the 360 Italian ( the poolside restaurant) the latter offering a €25 set meal with all inclusive drinks for 3 hours. ( food was good too!)
I’m not sure it’s quite a 5star given the shared facilities so would look at the Victoria too as the location is perfect for exploring Sliema and a 5min walk to the ferry to Valletta, but also usually quiet. ( though it’s next to the parish church so early evening bell ringing is unavoidable- but great views of the fireworks!)
As an aside it’s also worth exploring Ta’ Kris just off the main shopping street for Maltese food!

Having stayed at The Palace previously in 2017 and 2019 there was simply no other hotel we considered when we chose Malta for our 2022 holiday destination. So it was with great excitement and anticipation that we arrived on the 5th June looking forward to spending 10 days with an ‘old friend’.
The welcome was as warm as ever and our room was perfect. However the cracks began to show even on that first day. We ordered a snack at the pool whilst waiting for our room to become available and were given the totally wrong food. Yes, mistakes happen but to then hear one of the managers berating and bullying members of his staff in full view of guests was both unprofessional and embarrassing.
The staffing issues began to mount up. Terrible service at the Talk of the Town restaurant resulted in us asking if someone would serve us - half an hour after we had sat at a table. Housekeeping not making up our room by 4 pm on 2 separate occasions and more bullying and finger wagging from a supervisor - this time to the poor girl on housekeeping duty.
At this point I decided it was time to speak to a manager . I did not get the lady’s name but she was very apologetic and understanding and even asked if she could take notes as there were so many other issues, namely keys not opening our room door and problems with the dirty pool! Whilst not making excuses, the manager hinted that the hotel was experiencing staffing issues but agreed that this was not the standard expected at The Palace. Over the 10 day stay, we we offered complimentary drinks on 5 separate occasions for service which fell below that which is expected. We also received a complimentary meal at the Temptasian Restaurant. We may just have been unfortunate but there were simply too many issues to just ignore them.
It’s worth noting that Lawrence was, as usual, extremely attentive and went out of his way to help.
He is an example of 5 star service and deserves praise for his endeavours.
Finally, the drop in standard can be summed up by the following fact. In 2017 and 2019 at breakfast, there was table service for both tea and coffee, and sparkling wine was on offer every day. In 2022 both these features have disappeared. It is these small but significant features which turn a 4 star hotel into a 5 star establishment.

I stayed here three nights and enjoyed the hotel. It's in a convenient location - close to a number of cafes and restaurants, as well as the ferry and bus terminal. The staff were really nice. My first room was really noisy - they were drilling in the room next door, so they moved me to a higher floor with a beautiful view of the sea. You could also hear people walking past and talking. Not that big of a deal, as I sleep with ear plugs, but if you are sensitive to noise, it might be worth asking for a room far away from the foot traffic. The rooms were huge, as were the bathrooms. The bed was really comfortable and the showers were really nice. Overall, a good friendly hotel.

+1
I booked a weeks holiday at The Palace, Sliema due to being a 5 star hotel in a central location and offering what appeared near perfect amenities and service.
On first impressions were the hotel lived up-to it’s 5 star rating. The staff are all very welcoming, polite and helpful.
The twin room was spacious and clean. Sadly, we had a few issues on arrival including a broken kettle, a broken (dangerous) desk lamp, a room door that didn’t lock properly and the beds were not made as twins (clearly stated this in the booking). Most of these issues were resolved promptly but some took several more phone calls to reception. Also, the Daily room service was inadequate on occasions, such as not replacing towels, leaving their personal drinks bottles in our room, not making the beds properly (just pulling over the duvet) and not taking the laundry (causing a 3 day delay) when requested.
Although these issues were resolved when mentioned to reception this is not something I should have had to do nearly everyday of my holiday considering it’s a 5 star hotel.
Dining - we were half board and all meals were buffet style (I would not have booked half board if it was made clear on the website all meals were buffet style). Breakfast was great and had plenty of choice. Although the hot choices weren’t hot as the dining room was constantly cold due to having the Aircon on permanently (it was November not the height of summer) by the time you were seated after choosing your meal it was lukewarm/cold. Sadly, the evening buffet was the same, as the dining room was very cold and the hot choices soon became cold after choosing. When asked to turn the Aircon off/warmer temperature I was told this wasn’t possible.
Therefore, we decided to eat in the sister hotel, The Victoria and the talk of the town cafe as the food was freshly prepared and hot, and very tasty.
I can also highly recommend the Temptasian restaurant as the food choices were outstanding along with the quality of the food. We received a €16pp credit for meals ordered outside the standard restaurant.
The pool areas both indoors and on the roof terrace were lovely and there were towels available for use, there was also bar service available on the roof terrace. These areas are also shared with the Victoria hotel next door.
Overall, our holiday was lovely, and although I would recommend The Palace as a great place to stay in Sliema, I do not think it is worthy of its 5 star status, albeit this could easily be rectified and standards improved if the hotel wanted to up its game - a recommendation could be to ask all guests to complete questionnaires about their experience after check out but I didn’t and haven’t received this which is disappointing as this could really improve the overall quality of this hotel.

We have been going to Malta for the last 8 years and we always stay at The Palace hotel apart from one year when it was closed for a refurbishment and we really missed it.
Firstly I would like to highlight that the hotel had things in place due to covid to keep the customers and staff safe however they did not effect our stay. We felt very safe during our stay but still enjoyed all the facilities at the hotel. The staff are always very friendly and will go out of their way to make your stay perfect and nothing is to much trouble. The reception staff especially Simba and Dorianne are really helpful and will check in with you when passing that everything is ok with you stay.
I recommend booking the breakfast during the stay as its great food with lots of choice, The breakfast is not self serve at the moment due to covid but the staff are very helpful and make sure you have everything you need, The breakfast is always great quality when we stay here and it was even nicer during our last stay which I did not think was possible.
The bar are Talk of the town is a great place to have drinks and lunch and a great place to chill, the staff are very attentive and make great cocktails that are on 10 euro for 2 during happy hours. The bar manager is a lovely man and the staff remember what you cocktails you like and give great service during your stay especially Laurance. The roof top bar is open during the good weather and is a great place to soak up the sun and grab lunch and drinks.
The hotel has a great gym and the indoor spa and pool facilities are lovely, there is a great spa on site if you like treatments and I highly recommend the couples massage which is really reasonable at only 100 Euros. The Temp Again restaurant on the top floor is a must during your stay its just beautiful.
All the staff at the hotel are doing their best to give the 5 star service you receive at this hotel during difficult times and restrictions. Twice during our stay my partner and I witnessed customer speaking to the staff in an horrendous and rude manner for no reason other than than some things have to be done differently due to covid and staff shortages like most countries . We found that there was no reason to speak to hard working staff in this manner when they are working hard, people should be a bit more considerate.
I can not recommend this hotel enough and I have recommended to family and friends over the years who have also enjoyed their stays. Great hotel, great food and drink, but it the staff who make it a great place to staff.

It is a pleasure to read that our efforts have helped to tick most of your boxes and may have even helped to make your stay in our hotel a successful and memorable one - the eight time round - wow. Especially your comments about our staff are appreciated. This is were psychology comes in our job - staff in all levels also had to change their way of life including giving a service - not every body understands - you cannot imagine how valid your comment is. We do hope you will consider returning to our AX brand as well, in one of our other 6 properties on the island – you may feel free to contact us by referring to the various social media platforms including our website. Enjoyed a weeks B&B stay through Jet com holidays in a superior room with sea view.
Yes there was a sea view in room 636 and balcony but not looking towards Valletta. The room was comfortable and spacious and was cleaned daily. Unfortunately the beds had plastic coated mattress covers which did not help with sleep. I eventually removed mine which solved the issue.
Breakfast choices were extensive and varied and fresh omelettes were cooked to order.
Staff are friendly, helpful and efficient.
The dusting of lamp standards in rooms and beautiful glass chandeliers in the bar area certainly needed attention.
It is a good base for sightseeing and the ferry at the bottom of the road is easy to use to visit Valletta. Local bus stops are easily accessed too and reception had current bus and ferry timetables available.
Plenty of restaurants to sample on the sea front.
The roof top area is ideal for sun bathing and the pool was still available in November.
The roof top restaurant is excellent with super night time views of Valletta. We enjoyed the Lotus menu on our first evening and the Indian special on our last evening . Both quite pricey but well worth the money.

We never had a problem finding two together. There’s a smaller adults only pool on the level below the main pool and there are quite a few loungers there as well.
