Thanks to AMA Waterways, we had the pleasure of dining in this wonderful environment one evening. Not to be missed. A highlight of our week's excursion in the area. Incredible views from the terraces and wonders to see inside the monastery.

Alpendurada Monastery had been established in the 13th century but later turned into a luxury hotel cum restaurant few years ago. It was now still enjoyed to have beautiful views of the river valley from the terraces. Our cruise trip included a charming dinner in this medieval building. It was really an experience. The compound was very large or say too quiet for hotel accommodation. Nonetheless it was spacious enough to have dinner seats arranged in the dining hall. Staffs were helpful and food/drinks very nice. Hope to have chance to visit this hotel in day time in the future.

This hotel / restaurant is very nice and well maintained. You can stay it the rooms that used to be the monks. The food was good and the drinks OK. The views from outside down the valley are spectacular. Enjoyed the evening

Had a very special evening enjoying a good dinner at this extraordinary building which is now a Hotel but still retains much of its original Romanesque and medieval architecture. The views from here are amazing as it is so high up. The original monks cell doors are now number for guests and one can room around seeing so many different rooms etc.

The history is available on some documents posted on the web, but I cannot include links in my answer. The rooms that I saw were not good. I saw three and they all were small, with old furniture and smelling musty. Bathrooms are even worse, with old plumbing, cracked tiles, toilets that don't flush, etc... I visited in summer and air conditioning did not work. However, the building itself is worth a visit, the view is amazing and the food very good.

"Our room was on the second floor and faced the river Douro in the morning the sound of the church bells coming from across the river and from the alpendurada church and the mist surrounding the place give a feeling of being very close to heaven"
