If you’re planning a surprise party or a private dining experience for a big group of people, I can’t recommend Highdown enough. At the beginning of the year I organised a surprise party for my Mum’s Party in the private dining room on the first floor which is totally free of charge - The Manager Nikki was so helpful and attentive, she even stayed after her shift to make sure everything went swimmingly, she made sure my mum was brought up to the party none the wiser and I can’t thank her enough. She was completely surprised! The room comfortably fit around 40 people with room for more and the buffet food was absolutely delicious. All the guests were commenting on how well presented and yummy the food was. We were able to have music playing at a reasonable volume. The staff came in regularly to clear glasses and to make sure we were happy. We had such a lovely evening and will be recommending this venue for all kinds of functions. Thank you Nikki and to everyone who worked on the evening of the 3rd of January 2020, your customer service was amazing, the food was delicious and the portions were generous. Most importantly my mum had the best birthday and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Stayed for just one night . Ample free parking, lovely old pub with hotel rooms round the back in a separate building next to the Tea Room. We had a superior room and it was spacious beautifully decorated with a huge luxurious bathroom , which had a pedestal bath and massive walk-in shower . Everything in the room was spotless and they had a strict one way system around the site and hand sanitizers . All staff wore visors . The evening meal was very good and excellent value for money . The only glitch was they didn’t have a record of our table reservation via Booking.com but they sorted it out. I would definitely stay here again . Lovely walks on the Downs nearby . The gardens were still shut. The only negative was that the quaint tea room shuts at 4pm and we arrived shortly after meaning we couldn’t have the afternoon tea we were looking forward to on such a sunny afternoon , no idea why it shuts so early in September .

We spent three nights on a b & b basis staying in Room 8 (superior room). We arrived on a sunny Father's Day and the place was buzzing and had a lovely atmosphere. The staff are young, energetic and friendly. We thought our room was lovely, especially the luxurious bathroom. L'Ocitaine toiletries, a roll top bath and large shower made it extra special and with a heated towel rail, warm, when a couple of evenings were chilly. We had a separate sitting area and there were two good sized tv's. Large comfy bed and quality linen ensured sleep was good. There was a good full length mirror and power points near the mirror for the hairdryer. Breakfast was very tasty. Good choice and quality products. We ate dinner in the restaurant on all three nights. The Sunday roast was particularly good and we liked that there was large and small portions on offer on some items for those with a smaller appetite. The dining room was very attractive and had a good atmosphere. Plenty of staff ensured good service. Wine was priced at a reasonable level (as opposed to some other drinks).

I have not awarded the Highdown full marks for the following. The internet connection was bad on occasion. Really in 2021 this should be improved. There should be a secure website for guests at the very least. On our final night we felt that pre-dinner drinks were way too expensive. I was served a rose prosecco (didn't ask for this more expensive prosecco) and the charge was rectified when I pointed it out. My husband's whisky was served in a chunky tumbler! Seems a little thing, but important to a whisky lover. Again he was charged extra for a single malt which wasn't asked for. In a place like this the bar staff should be properly trained. After such an enjoyable stay, we felt taken advantage of.

I enjoyed my visit to The Highdown. It was easy to park and the entrance was most attractive. We were shown to our table and our attentive waitress bought menus and we ordered drinks. The dining room was really impressive. Historic and well appointed. The spacing is excellent as you don't feel on top of any other guests and you don't bump into others, I really liked that. The layout was really well thought out. We ordered our mains which came just in time as we had chatted a while. From the roast dinners, burger and the really amazing Crispy Beef salad all plates were left empty. Really nice presentation of food too. Deserts were a bit slower and an extra glass of wine took far to long to arrive. The toilet facilities are lovely, clean and luxurious. Really enjoyed The Highdown, my rating is only due to service being just a little slow and the wine late. Our waitress did apologise because they were very busy. We will be back.

We felt welcome, at home and very relaxed from the minute we arrived. Our King Room was a great size, with an amazing bathroom, which included a large walk in shower as well as a roll top bath, plus gorgeous L'Occitane toiletries. As the rooms are separate from the main bar and restaurant, we had perfect peace and quiet, the only thing we heard was birdsong!
There is a large outdoor seating area which we made good use of as the weather was lovely and we ate in the restaurant which has a lovely feel to it. The menu has a good choice of classic dishes which are well presented and delicious but the breakfasts are the stuff of legend; probably the best full English we have ever had. All cooked to order and brought to your table, a real treat.
All the staff are really friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. A special mention for our waiter on both nights of our stay ( think his name was Paul) who made sure we had fresh milk for our room for our morning tea. A small gesture but it made a difference.
Last but not least The Highdown is very Covid secure. There is plenty of hand sanitizer available, the staff wear masks, although possibly this may change after 19 July, and there is a one way system currently in operation, which made us feel very safe.
We would absolutely recommend The Highdown, we had a fabulous stay.

We stayed at The Highdown for two nights and were very impressed. We had a beautiful suite with a lounge, bedroom and huge bathroom. The decor was very cosy, the bed comfortable, the curtains were dark and you could control the heating. We ate breakfast there and had two evening meals, all of which were excellent. The staff seemed to enjoy their work, always smiling, very friendly and willing to make sure everything was just so. We will definitely plan another visit.

Situated right next to lovely walks on the Downs, this is a great spot to stay with dogs. We met all the local lucky dogs who get walked up here daily, with friendly advice given for more walks further afield. There is also a dog friendly cafe in the hotel grounds.

We have stayed twice, in Room 1 (with freestanding feature bath, and very large bathroom) and Room 3 (with a shower).

Dogs can be with you at breakfast, with a table set up away from main breakfast area. And other meals can be taken with the dogs in the bar. Service is very relaxed and friendly.

A lovely hamper of food and a selection of drinks was provided on Christmas Day evening (as the bar was closed) - very much appreciated.

We booked this as a last minute overnight B&B, given most of the properties in the area were already fully booked we weren't expecting much at this price level. However, we were pleasantly surprised. Rooms are comfortable, clean, well decorated and well appointed with comfortable beds and good quality fittings & decor. Staff are friendly, plenty of free parking on site, and the pub restaurant was also quite good as well. There's also a very quaint Tea Room on site which is worth a visit. Breakfast was included in the price, although it is only a cooked traditional breakfast option. However it was good value for money and would recommend.

We stayed here for a week and found the room to be clean and well appointed. However the hotel is dog friendly and we were woken early by dog barking..! Not friendly to me.
Breakfast was good but was a little odd. Due to the position of our table, we could not see the cereal table and we were not offered any. We only noticed it later in the week. Toast is brought on the main breakfast plate so you have to scrape off the beans when you want to apply marmalade. (With the knife used for main breakfast as no more cutlery is brought). Strange, perhaps something to do with CoVid perhaps?
All in all it’s quite nice but way too expensive, and there is still a sewage smell.

We booked a table for 4 online; nice and easy.
Atmosphere was pleasantly buzzing with plenty of people enjoying themselves. We had bit of banter with friendly barman as we ordered drinks and then he showed us to a table in one of the many impressive dining halls. It was a spacious table that could have seated 6.

The decor is that of a country house with tiled/wood floor areas; mahogany panelled walls and LOTS of interesting paintings on the walls. Huge stone fireplace too.

The food took quite a while to come but we nibbled olives and were quite happy drinking and chatting. We all enjoyed our meals when they came and the house wine was pleasant.
My slow cooked feather of beef was melt in the mouth delicious!

We love having this hotel/restaurant nearby and have been several times now. The garden in the summer is great as well.
Not the cheapest but not madly expensive either and the food is quality.
