A basic but clean and well managed hotel, with a high standard of cooking and service. Six courses for €30! On Christmas Day, booked the night before.... wonderful atmosphere. We were the only foreigners.

Where can you eat a four course lunch for €12.50? Almost anywhere in south west France is the answer. Take the Hotel du Nord in the hill-top village of Tombeboeuf. White vans parked outside are a good sign. Inside beefy guys crowd the tables. The pleasant, well-lit dining room overlooks a lake and distant hills. No wonder the call this region the French Chiantishire. A starter of soup served in a large white tureen is traditional (difficult not to finish the dish); a selection of 12 or so hors d'oeuvres would be enough at that point, but there's a choice of main courses (e.g. lamb chops, tripe, fish in a parcel). All splendid quality. Then five desserts to choose from. With a half litre of the local red, we were replete. Lovely service from the patron. A great spot.

Where can you still have a four course lunch (during week days and only for lunch) for less than 12 euro's? Well here, at the hotel du nord. Expect the food your grandmother made. No frills, but nice. You start off with the soup of the day, followed by a buffet of salads, than main course and you end up with a dessert. There is no outside dining, but the view through the large windows is really beautiful.

Called in here for a celebratory lunch and were certainly not disappointed. Dont let the downbeat view from the street put you off. The interior is far more appealing. We opted for the Sunday six course 22.90 menu. Soup for starters, a delicious cold meat/seafood buffet (as much you wanted), essentially two main courses, cheese board and dessert. My dessert choice was a spectacular Profiteroles au Chocolat which was the envy of the group who mainly opted for the mundane Creme Brulee. The view from the restaurant across the Loubert valley is truly magnificent, almost worth the cost of the meal itself which is extremely good value in its own right. If we happened to be in this part of France again we would certainly make a point of eating at the du Nord.

We went to this hotel for lunch. What an amazing view from the hotels hilltop position . Very good food. Lots to choose from and good portion sizes. Attentive service- everything you could wish for. As with many French properties-dont be put off by the slightly unkempt exterior.
