We stayed two nights in this hotel, The hotel is very tired dull and dark room walls must be paper thin as you can hear next doors conversations, dining room garden is just rough grass, bed was comfortable, on the first day we asked for hand soap as none in room, we left the hotel around 09-30hrs. put out sign to clean room! came back around 1700hrs. room still had not been done, phoned reception to be told it will be done tomorrow, asked for towel's and soap, they said the did not have hand soap, which is not acceptable with covid, Eventually we got towel's and a bar of soap. On second night got a phone call from reception at around 2030hrs would we come down to settle or account as it would be busy in the morning!! We were booked in for Bed & Breakfast but reception requested we let the know if we were having breakfast each morning !!! No Lift lots of stairs, unkept car park at rear and narrow steps overgrown down to hotel

Visited for an evening meal. Initially we were going to go to the Garden View Restaurant (part of the same place and same kitchen and menu), but fell in love with the atmosphere in the Bar. A superb menu, great service and very well cooked food. That, along with the decent bar with local ales, loads of whisky and gins is why we chose to go back for a second visit for dinner. Highly recommend!

We found this place by accident as we were struggling to get a booking for an evening meal. Very quaint place, although we did not see any of the rooms. Old style hotel with a lot of character/charm but dining room didn't quite happen. Food was OK, service a bit slow and felt a bit hit and miss. Pleasant staff who just somehow just didn't seem to have their act together. Bit unfair to be critical but........

We didn’t stay at the hotel but visited their bar - The Royal Cask Whiskey Gin Bar. Oh dear! When you first walk in m, the bar is well appointed and spotlessly clean… also eerily empty. We soon discovered why! We were met with genuinely the most unwelcoming welcome we’ve ever had or seen. The bar man seemed terrified to be there, when we asked for some information about the draft beers we were told to “read the drinks menu” which laughably had virtually no information in! The Gins (remember it’s a Gin Bar!) could not be served with the appropriate garnish because “we’re not busy enough to have the correct garnish!!” (Note to bar man - do you ever stop to wonder why you’re not busy enough!?) It was so bad it was funny, so we had a drink just to observe before going somewhere that wanted our custom. Our next stop was Lucano’s Italian restaurant and it was full, busy & vibrant, with good service, great food and wine, all delivered in an environment that felt very Covid safe. If the folks at the Royal Cask are serious about working in Hospitality the the first step is surely to learn how to be hospitable!! If you don’t know how, pop over the street to Lucano’s and see how it’s done. If you’re visiting Kirkwall either give this place a miss, or maybe pop in and see if the worlds most miserable bar man is on duty, it’s genuinely quite amusing to see! You can’t miss him, black pony tail, miserable face, shouting and customers from behind his little screen!!
