This is a small family run hotel hidden away in the wooded area on the slopes of the fell that overlooks Grange. We were stunned by the beauty of this beautifully maintained Victorian house. The grounds are a credit with tiers of lawns surrounded by beds of beautiful flowers. The twin room was immaculate and the hotel was happy to let us bring our two old Labradors with us. The evening food was excellent - with lots of locals making the journey up the narrow lane to dine - always a good sign. Breakfast was also cooked to a high standard. This was are first stay at this wonderful hotel and we look forward to visiting again in the near future.

We had dinner here last night- it was five star from start to finish. The hotel had a lovely homely family feel to it. The staff were welcoming on arrival. The waiting-on staff were friendly and efficient, including the younger ones who were extremely professional and worked so hard all evening. The food was excellent. I had luxury fish pie- it was full of top quality fish and the best fish pie I have ever eaten! There were balloons, poppers, hats etc on the tables and the relaxed party atmosphere made it an amazing night. We visit Grange regularly but have never been here before but will definitely be returning in the near future. A huge thank you to everyone for making it such a lovely evening and a happy new year to you all.

Needed a break, booked a few days at the Hampsfell. Drove across in glorious sunshine with the roof down, stopping at Hawes for a leg stretch and a Max wee.

As mentioned before, car park pretty full, but parked up OK. Registered (Covid rules followed), shown to room, view over gardens, bed comfortable, bath with overshower.

Had booked dinner, wandered down, bottle of Bad Medicine from Ulverston Brewery (recommended) and a nice red for wife.

Menu on a board brought to the table (don't touch it .. Covid rules), good selection,
went for Lamb shank, gorgeous, wife enjoyed the steak .. pudding, Fruit Meringue, so good wife had it all three nights, I had the summer fruits pudding again lovely.

Actually ate there all three nights, the steak pie excellent and a great lump of gammon.

Would recommend hotel to anyone wanting a homely place to stay, three generations of family all working there. Well kept and not at all pretentious.

Just stayed 3 nights here. Honestly wish I could give it more stars.
On arrival we were met with a lovely lady named Nicola who checked us in. Room was spacious, there are tea/coffee facilities and the ensuite is large and had a good shower with toiletries.

The location is up quite a steep hill which was okay going down however coming back up is an adventure especially in the dark. However it was a good base for our exploration.

The rooms although fairly clean had a colony of spiders living in them, i counted 6. The beds weren't the most comfortable and everything was loud. The doors were loud, the locks were loud, you open a window and it creaks, the shower (while good) was loud, the running water was loud. I know it's an older building but good lord!

Breakfast was included in the price and it was okay. I don't eat meat and was surprised there was no veggie sausages on the menu. I guess I could have messaged ahead but come on, it's 2020, you can't swing a cat without hitting a vegetarian or vegan!! The constant filling of a form for breakfast was quite annoying as well. I get with COVID its better to take the orders beforehand but I fail to see why you can't fill it once for the while trip and then if a change or addition is needed the guest can let you know? We never had a pen either which was frustrating, I had to use my eyeliner one night! Best thing about breakfast were the poached eggs.

We ate dinner one evening here and again vegetarian options seem to be a bit of an afterthought. A huge menu and just the one main meal option with no meat is disappointing. I will say the desserts are pretty nice though!

Overall we found the experience a little all over the place, while we felt welcome some of the time, other times we felt like we were intruding on something. We came back one evening after a day out and it was perhaps 8pm, we decided it was way too early to head to bed so thought we would sit in the bar/dining area and get a tea or coffee. We sat there for 30 minutes. Nobody came to ask us if we wanted anything but the chatty older couples next to us got asked twice. Eventually we just decided we'd head up. At 8.30pm. On our holiday.

Like I said, I wish I could score it higher as I feel the potential to be great (for us) is there but it fell short. I think it's a great place for older people but maybe not for 2 young professionals. It was a good base for us but we didn't feel like we wanted to spend any time at the actual hotel and grounds which considering it was our first break of 2020, (we both work in the NHS) we had wanted to relax a bit more and this didn't do it for us.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a long and thorough review of our hotel! I feel that there may have been some communication issues during your stay, We have the Daily breakfast order form because whilst on holiday most people like to change their breakfast order daily so feel that by giving them a form each day they are able to choose what they would like, obviously if you had told us you wanted the same thing each morning we would have just kept you original order for the duration of your stay! Also we do have vegetarian sausages and if you had just asked we could have got these for you! You could have also asked to borrow a pen to fill in your breakfast fom if it was prooving to be such a problem for you !! we do say when checking in that if you require any assistance during your stay just to ring the bell I cant actually belive you sat there for thiry minutes and didnt just ask for a drink or ring the bell ? But I do appologise if you were missed. We are just a small family run hotel and although we don't have lots of vegetarian options on the menu we always try to have at least two freshly made options on the menu which we change regularly and again if you had talked to us and let us know what you were after we can be very accomodating! Oh and at least the spiders are conforming to the new government guidelines !

Enjoyed an excellent long weekend with my family. Our stay was comfortable and safe under the current restrictions. We were delighted that the hotel catered admirably for those of our party with dietary restrictions (no gluten or dairy).

We will be sure to come back again and unreservedly recommend the hotel and restaurant to others, especially if you have specific dietary needs.

We were looking for somewhere to eat out on the last evening of our holiday in Grange. The places that took our fancy required pre-booking or queueing due to COVID.
Not here. We discovered a gem. We had a good dinner sitting on the terrace overlooking the wonderful garden. Later as the evening got chilly we moved inside to a cosy little bar/dining area.
The food was a cut above "pub grub" but not pretentious at all. Just what we like, filling without being gross. My chocolate sundae dessert was a great way to top off a sunny holiday in Grange.
The staff were excellent, very friendly and welcoming.
If we are in Grange again we'd put this hotel on our list of places to eat at and although we did not look at the rooms we'd consider staying here too.

A friendly, family run hotel, which is very dog friendly, serving excellent quality, reasonably priced food.
The building itself is characterful due to its age, set in 2 acres of gardens, with a cosy dining room, comfortable ensuite bedroom, with an excellent shower and is Covid secure.
Highly recommended, will return with friends in the future.

We had a wonderful stay at Hampsfell House for my birthday celebrations. The hotel has a lovely position which is about a 5 minute walk up hill from Grange which has fantastic views over the estuary. As soon as I walked through the door I knew we had chosen the perfect place, cosy old fashioned charm. The staff made us all feel very welcome and the 3 course meal was delicious. Thank you so much, we will definitely return.

Spent 2 lovely days here, and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our stay. Owners are friendly and helpful, and have ensured that "covid" doesn't spoil the overall experience. Food in the restaurant is really good. The Holker estate venison was my personal highlight! Breakfasts are great too.
The hotel is set above Grange, but the walk back up isn't too steep or arduous.

A three night trip to visit relatives was enhanced by staying at Hampsfell. The staff made sure you always feel safe and cared for. The hotel is hidden up a hill, but worth it. We had room 3 with views of the garden, super.
Breakfast is preordered and was always on time and very good. We also had 2 meals there which all 4 of us really enjoyed.
Would recommend for a meal even if you don’t need a hotel, but staying is great as well.
