No reception sign, so no idea where to check-in. Found a guest who told me where to go. Stable cottage was absolutely filthy. I immediately went to find the owner to tell her we would not be staying. There was no offer to rectify the situation at all from the owner as she was in the middle of having your hair done. She said she had not checked the cleaners work before we checked in. I would like to suggest that she doesn’t ever check the cleaners work. Booked with Expedia who say checking in time is 2 o’clock, battens farm webpage says 3 o’clock. I emailed the owner for clarification before hand but she never responded. To explain the pictures - only two mugs in the cottage both filthy inside and out. Teapot with 2 inches of dirty water in it and egg on the outside of one. Lampshade filthy. Milk left for us a week out of date, we checked in on the 21st of June. Cooker hob dirty. Dish cloth under the sink not only filthy but still wet. Unironed bedding with blood on the duvet cover, there was also a mark on the fitted sheet. Cooker hood so dusty I wrote hello in the dust. Candles were supposed to be ornaments & Cooker grill disgusting still with food and thick grease in it. In the freezer there was an entire tray of food mostly bread items and some things in packets that were opened. It is unclear if they were meant for us or whether they’ve been left by the previous guests. The furniture was extremely tired as was the kitchen and all the units. None of the cupboards have been wiped out, cupboards doors by the handles were very dirty with fingermarks. The toaster had not been touched so was full of crumbs and covered in splashes. There is food underneath the cushions on the sofas and the log burner with absolutely nothing to burn so pointless. Nowhere on the website does it say you have to bring your own logs. All in all I am unsure whether this is a business in trouble or whether the owner has no idea what she’s doing. I have emailed for a refund but as yet have had no reply. I chose battens farm because it had a 4.7 out of 5 rating. Either she has a lot of friends or I was the luckiest guess they’ve ever had.

Beautiful B&B on a working farm. Really clean, comfortable and fully equipped with everything you need and more. Breakfast was yummy! Lovely to be near and see the cows and horses, would highly recommend.

I feel obliged to report this as I am not an unreasonable person and this was not an unreasonable request and nor did I request it unreasonably. Please read this review. When reported that our pillow cases were damp and I asked for some fresh dry ones - there were no spares as the owner washes the same set. It was a rainy so clearly it hadnt been dried properly. Damp bedding is not COVID safe. However, we didn't want to wait for them to be dried on the radiators so said we would put our t-shirts over the pillows so we could get to bed. The next thing we knew was that the owners husband then barged into our cottage shouting to see the damp bedding. He then proceeded to storm upstairs past by husband and I straight into the bedroom where my autistic teenage daughter was pottering about getting ready for bed. He verbally abused her by shouting at her to show him the damp bedding despite the fact he also invaded her privacy - luckily she wasnt in state of undress. I am reporting this man to safeguarding. He then as quick as he came stormed out and shouted at us that we could stay the night but to 'piss off first thing in the morning'. I replied that would be leaving straight away - his reply was ' yes piss off now the lot off you - just piss off' My daughter then had a full panic attack at the shock and later described him as a 'big bull'. She was sick in the car on the way home, she couldn't breath. He really frightened us all and left us all in a state of shock. My daughter will suffer PTSD from this as she has already had one nightmare since. He physically abused us, invaded our privacy, invaded the bedroom of our teenage daughter and aggressive and violent towards us. Having worked in care since the COVID outbreak, we just wanted one nice night away as a family. This was far from it and I cannot stress enough - DO NOT STAY here - they should not be running a bed and breakfast service.

Response from Jo Lane, General Manager at Battens Farm Cottages B&B and Self Catering

Complete nonsense - booking.com cancelled your reservation, not me, as firstly , I requested that you should receive a refund as you didn’t actually stay, and secondly , because they did not take your complaint seriously whatsoever, and thought it was unfair that you should be able to leave a review when it was clearly such complete nonsense. We do not tolerate insulating or rude language or unacceptable behaviour at Battens Farm , and anyone who does not respect this will be asked to leave. Regards , Joanna Lane. Manager, Battens Farm .

We stayed in the three bedroom cottage and it was lovely being out in the country on a farm. A very unique experience. The bedrooms are upstairs and one bathroom, living area and kitchen downstairs. It is worth mentioning that the stairs are very steep so was a little difficult for my elderly parents. The owners are lovely and breakfast delicious. A couple of things I will mention: 1) internet did not work most of the time and when it did, it was really slow. For me travelling from Australia, I found it hard to research the area and also stay in touch. 2) We did get totally lost trying to find the property. We ended up stopping at the post office / shop in Yatton Keynell and the staff there were amazing. A big shout to them who rang around to find where the property is and thanks to them for looking it up and giving us exact directions. It is only a 5 minute drive to the farm. You must try the sausage rolls and other goodies, delicious. 3) the facilities were totally fine and we stayed four nights which was probably a little too much as the chairs were not entirely comfortable. But that is personal opinion. All in all, a nice stay to experience the Cotswolds.

We wanted to stay rather than commute back after a friends party. We stayed in the farmhouse and it was great. 3 bedrooms, 1 had a single bed, 1 had 2 single beds and other had a double. There was a fully functioning kitchen and bath in the bathroom. The cows visited and the horses were stroked. Kids loved it. My friends never knew of this place - would return. Breakfast was lush too!
