Ramside Hall Hotel charms many guests with its beautifully decorated atmosphere, despite occasional noise disruptions and elements that some find dated. While the location is generally lauded for its convenience, there are comments about noise near the bar. The value proposition of the hotel comes under scrutiny, with guests pointing out overpriced services and additional costs. Room experiences are mixed, with some guests appreciating the spaciousness and views, but others raising issues with maintenance and noise. The service quality varies, with reports of both warm, helpful interactions and experiences of disorganization. Amenities like the spa and dining options receive positive mentions, yet service consistency is a concern. Cleanliness is a strong point, with most areas being spotless, though minor issues are sometimes noted.

My boyfriend booked this stay for us via Secret Escapes on a D,B&B basis for £507 for 3 nights, as our first away trip since lockdown. I was a little apprehensive about everything and what we would expect it to be like in the ‘new normal’. We had a short drive up and upon arrival got parked straight away and made our way to reception to check in. Superb safety measures were in place, including checking that you were from the same household and your temperature was noted on the booking form. We were initially offered room 109 on the ground floor over looking the car park with a pokey iron bar like window and no light at all. We immediately had that changed to room 308 which was on the top floor, overlooking the golf course on the back of the hotel with a beautiful fountain and a Juliet style balcony. What a difference. So much more light & airy. We had been automatically booked into the Rib Room that night with a £50 allowance between us and as we are not red meat eaters, there wasn’t a lot of choice for us. Not realising that we could have swapped this over to the Fusion restaurant, we did just that for the next 2 nights and this was so much better. Compliments to Emma, our server, in Fusion.

PREMIER ROOM
Great rooms, with large freestanding bath, walk in showers, huge Hypnos beds & large Smart TV. There is currently no housekeeping service, but if you do want anything refreshing in your room then this must be ‘ordered’ on the morning. As we were staying 3 nights, we did require housekeeping services but we had to remove ALL of our personal belongings into the wardrobe so nothing was touched due to COVID.

SPA

As a hotel guest you do have access to the 25 metre pool until 3pm we were told and then you are required to book onto available 2 hour slots. If you wish to have access to the Hydrotherapy part of the Spa then that’s £30 each for full day use. We booked this for our last day but it does get noisy. Again, temperatures are taken before entry.

All in all a lovely, relaxing 3 nights stay with just perhaps one mishap at breakfast on our last morning but this was rectified by the Duty Manager.

Plenty of car park spaces, check in was easy and as we arrived 30 minutes before official 3pm time we were pleased to get straight into our room.

We’d booked a package which gave us a premier room, champagne and chocolates , breakfast as well as £50 voucher for the Rib Room.

Our Premier room was nice, huge bath as well as walk in shower, huge bed etc.
The biggest disappointment was that our view from the elk was of the main car park. We’d asked for a view of the golf course and if I’m honest assumed all Premier rooms had a better view but clearly not.

We were told that we needed to book a slot to use the leisure facilities and as this was one of the main reasons for booking the hotel, we were surprised to learn that not only did we only have a 1 hour time slot, pretty much all of the facilities were either out of use due to COVID or not included for hotel guests eg outside infinity pool, jacuzzi etc and we would need to pay £30 each for the privilege of a 1 hour session. Terrible in my opinion.

Breakfast area looked nice but we were put into some kind of overspill area which was literally a function room with nothing in the way of making it look homely. Adequate quality but food not very warm. Food in the Rib Room was superb, service good and this made our stay if I’m honest. Drinks in the bar areas were expensive but service and atmosphere made up for this so not a problem.

Staff without exception were very friendly which again made up for some of the issues re spa, breakfast etc as previously mentioned.

Nice rooms but not nice view, spa facilities not really there unless you upgrade but I think overall it was very good more than average.

Some of the issues we faced were clearly COVID related so fingers crossed some of mine as well as others feedback can improve the experience.

We still enjoyed our stay, could be better though.

Firstly staff are excellent and the hotel is COVID aware with procedures in place.
Hotel is nice, albeit dated in the room we had. Breakfast wasn't great, overcooked & minimal choice. On one morning the service at breakfast was akin to Fawlty Towers, with a lengthy queue to get in and then food not being delivered for ages, in fairness subsequent mornings improved significantly so I put it down to initial issues with the COVID procedures.
Food in Fusion & Rib Room was good, as was the service, although it's quite pricey.
Only the pool was open at the Spa but that was ok.
My biggest gripe was that if you stayed multiple nights then your room didn't receive even basic cleaning & if you needed towels, toilet rolls etc you had to phone reception & receipt of these items took ages. My understanding of the government guidance is that this isn't necessary and it seems to be a cost reduction excercise and, in my view, is unacceptable.
We played the Cathedral golf course twice. It was a very good test & in very good condition, however I was very annoyed to be "bumped off" our tee time without being told, to accommodate a golf society who then proceeded to hold us up the whole way round.
The staff however are superb, friendly, attentive & professional so despite these issues I would return but not under the current COVID restrictions.

On arrival me and my fiancé were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful grounds and entrance of Ramside, unfortunately this was short lived when we got to our room. Having paid for a deluxe double room (not cheap) we expected a certain standard that would reflect the hotels 4*.

When we entered the room, we noticed several dirt marks and stains on the chairs and carpets. There were also lots of water marks along wall (looked as if something was spilt or sprayed?) lots of cobwebs and dead insects on the window sill, clearly showing the room hadn’t been deep clean. This made us feel quite uneasy especially in the current situation we facing.

There was no main light in the room, only a few lamps which were dimly lit. As our room was also in the corner of the hotel on ground floor we did not get much sunlight. Though this is not a major problem, it was irritating trying to get ready, and when we were going to bed we had to walk around the room turning each light off individually.

Also our bedroom window was broken on arrival. We were unable to lock it or even close it. The staff were quick to come and fix this, however there fixing was ‘wedge it shut’ and even said ‘oh yeah that doesn’t look right’. We were then too worried to open the window in case we wouldn’t be able to shut it again. But being heatwave we found ourselves very uncomfortable at night as there was no air con.

Another problem we had was with our tv and WiFi. The TV had not been set up correctly so we were unable to use smart or live tv functions. WiFi was also incredibly slow despite them boasting a super fast WiFi speed. We waited over an hour for someone to fix the tv and had to call reception several times. When someone did arrive (10pm), he was very polite and tried his best but gave us the options of either using our own 4G as a hotspot or moving the TV which was the last thing we wanted to do at 10pm.
He was helpful and moved it for us as well as getting us an extension lead, And eventually after several attempts we were now able to connect the tv to the WiFi although still not achieve “super fast WiFi” promised by the hotel. We asked if we could go on the corporate WiFi as this had a stronger connection but he said hotel guests were not allowed to use it.

On a positive note, bed was very comfy and the bathroom was clean. The food at the Rib Room was delicious (service abit slow however it was a busy night and the staff were lovely) though they did over charge us for sides when they were supposed to be included with the meal and we had to request a refund. The spa was lovely too though only the swimming pool was open. It was not too busy so we felt safe and everything seemed to be very clean. We also ordered drinks which came quickly, though we were not told by the spa reception that we needed to set up a tab, which meant we had to go back out of the pool and queue to do this.

I stayed here with my husband last week in one of the executive suites, We have stayed at Ramside many times and alwayes enjoyed it but how times have changed.
We booked a suite that was about £400 for a thursday night, the Spa was full on booking but we were told we would be able to add this on at check in as always have last minute space this wasnt the case so we just used the pool for our allocated hour, the spa was full of really drunk groups and couples all over each other kidding and groping in thong bikinis in the pool whilst children were swimming in the pool
It was awful.
The room was next to the cleaners cupboard all we could hear was banging and shouting no fridge in the room it was a really hot day I rang reception and asked fora ice bucket and fan the receptionist was so rude like how dare I bother her! We got a fan and a pint glass filled with ice?! And it was as if it was a massive favour
The best part was fusion restersunt we booked for food st 7 at 8.15 whilst waiting for our cofee we were asked by staff are you about done I need your table we explained we has ordered coffee they said we could take our drinks to go!? Yet a larger table who arrived before us were left alone. I emailed the manager charlie who told me on booking it states you get 90 minutes to eat (were asked to leave at 75 minutes) and it doesnt state this at all no apology no nothing an offer of a discounted future stay! Why on earth would I return to a place full of drunk chavs and staff who are rude and unhelpful no thanks get better service at a travel lodge and dont get charged £400 for the pleasure! Honestly i never leave bad reviews or complain but it has gone so down hill here and its no surprise if this is the example the manager is setting! Such a shame as it used to be lovely

We stayed at Ramside for two nights for my partners birthday in the presidential suite. Check in was good and quick. The room on the third floor was very spacious and had beautiful views over the golf course. I think the room was quite recently decorated and although it was perfectly fine it was all a bit brown!! It looked dated even though it wasn’t and all a bit mismatched . The bathroom was nice with a great shower and big bath and floor to ceiling tiling, albeit brown again! Lots of nice Espa products too. The bed was firm but comfy but had an awful wooden base around it. If we banged in to it once we must have done it about ten times and I’m surprised I didn’t leave with bruised legs! We ate in Fusion & The Rib Room and visited the spa for which I have done separate reviews. The staff were lovely throughout the hotel, at breakfast and in the bar and the spa. On one of the days we ventured in to Durham. Just a minutes drive from the hotel is a park and ride. Plenty of parking and only £2 per person. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the centre and the buses run every ten minutes. Other than the castle and the cathedral the centre is very disappointing. Mainly closed shops and a bit run down. We only stayed an hour or so before heading back to use the spa facilities. I booked the stay direct with the hotel and signed up to the website. During December they did various Xmas countdown offers. Well worth signing up for if you intend to stay Jan-March. During our stay we got a free bottle of Prosecco in the room, a free bottle of rose in the rib room, 10% off the bill in fusion and 10% off the spa treatments. All in all we had a great time and I would happily return. From our room window we could see the tree houses that are being built and they look amazing although they should be at £500 a night. Maybe next time!!

We booked for Tuesday 25th May to stay in the Presidential Suite. We were allocated the McIntyre Suite which was rather dull and drab. It was clear on arrival the room was in some what need of cleaning and maintenance. I used a hand wipe to clean the bathroom door and was very surprised to see how much dirt had came off. Reception staff in the spa need some customer care training they were not very friendly at all. Our evening meal in the Rib room was over priced for what we were served and very small portions. You would expect the food allowance to cover at least two courses. There was no fridge in the room even though it was listed in the booking. We have stayed at Ramside many times before but will be reluctant to return. Enclosed is a photo of the wipe used to clean the bathroom door this room was not COVID safe.

We got a good offer for our stay (one night) but I was a little concerned at what I would find (as an ordinary tourist) at a golf/business orientated hotel. I need not have worried. This is a modern well equipped hotel with, if you are so inclined, swimming and spa activities - albeit with the latter at a cost. It is well decorated and by British standards we had a very large room and a more than adequate bathroom both of which were well furnished. We ate in the "rib room" and enjoyed our steaks within the £50 voucher which we had been allocated. A minor quibble was that I thought what I think was the house wine (George Duboeuf) could have been smoother. The adjoining bar was comfortable and pleasant. In the morning our breakfast was good (and hot). Perhaps the only plus point of Covid is that it has forced hotels to get rid of their buffets and serve hot breakfasts! A bonus point for the hotel is that it is a very short and easy journey to a park and ride system to Durham. In addition the bus to Durham is free if you have an OAP bus pass. All in all we enjoyed our stay and I would recommend the hotel. Just one last point. we were offered a free bottle of Prosecco with our booking and it wsas actually there and chilling when we arrived. Very well done - this sort of thing often doesn't happen smoothly in may places!

When you pay a significant amount of money for a short break, you hope everything meets your expectations.

What we loved: the junior suite was fantastic, the multi aspect windows, great beds and super space.

Both golf courses were challenging and enjoyed, great views too !

Access to the Pool (not spa) included in the rate was super clean, great size and very relaxing.

The Rib Room did not deliver value for money although everyone’s meals were adequate it didn’t provide the wow factor or live up to the hype.

It is clear to see there are a lot of new staff at the hotel and during the first week of re-opening that can be excused but a 30 minute check in for friends after 6.30pm is not what you’d expect and does not offer a quality customer experience.

A short taxi ride to Durham provided a real highlight including drinks and an Indian meal. We would be more inclined to do this in future rather than eat at the hotel unfortunately (Fusion was good though). The taxi guys (MJ) were very accommodating and flexible, quality cars and chat were a hit with us !

All in all we had a fantastic time, we would recommend and would be happy to to return but just hope that the service improves in the future.

This is a bit of a tricky one to judge.
Firstly we booked the treehouse for my 30th birthday.
The website gives you a virtual tour and a layout of the treehouses. It states it can be used as a whole unit or split into 1 suite and 2 bed suite.
When we arrived we were disappointed by the room - we had expected the lounge and kitchen facilities. We felt that it was misleading and although our room was nice we were underwhelmed due to the expectation of more. This needs to be crystal clear exactly what facilities are in specific for each price and pictures for each suite or studio please rather than a blanket tour.
When we pulled up there were two cars parked in front of our treehouse so no room to park. The gentleman who took us there said to park on the narrow gravel path? Felt guests could be told / more considerate with parking as one car then left at 7.
In the room there was no milk!! No hot chocolate? There was a bottle of wine missing from the basket. Fabulous coffee machine. Small fridge. Room was spotless and bathroom is beautiful. Lovely toiletries. There’s a great service whereby you can be collected and dropped between the main hotel and treehouse.
The room was so dark, there was no lamp or light near the tv - we needed our torch to check the thermostat and use the kettle. The lighting system is a bit odd too.
One of the caps on the hot tub was faulty and squirting water out.
We dined in the rib room. We waited 1 hr 15 mins before asking where our food was, the manager was very apologetic and explained it was very busy although people seated after us had their starter and mains before we had eaten anything. Eventually it arrived and when it did it was beautiful. We had the steak and the lamb. As a gesture of good will the desserts were removed from our bill. The food was great but the wait made it very disappointing.
We asked at reception about having breakfast in our room but were informed no as it was in the treehouse? However when leaving a member of staff was delivering a foiled breakfast tray to the treehouse next to us!! Very inconsistent.
Breakfast at fusion was decent, there was a good variety to choose from.
Overall, would we stay at the treehouse again? No. Perhaps in a larger group.
I think we would book a suite in the main hotel for return stay.
A few simple things that should be corrected.
