We had a river view room (paid extra) but unfortunately due to roadworks on the bridge our view mostly consisted of the worksite. This was also very noisy on Saturday morning from around 7am onwards which wasn’t ideal. Though this isn’t the hotel’s fault, it seems excessive to still pay extra for a room with a view etc to then experience this level of noise and not really what was advertised to us. Reception staff were lovely and there was hand sanitiser on entry as well as alcohol wipes left in the room for us. The TV allowed for casting from mobile phones which we loved! There were USB ports on lamps on either side of the (enormous!) bed which were also really handy for charging. The shower had an ‘eco’ option to save water and there was a separate recycling part of the bin as well, which I especially appreciated. Due to the main bridge being closed for roadworks we sometimes had to take longer routes back to the hotel - would recommend google maps to find your way there avoiding the road closure. Overall a lovely hotel with a very nice room, but unfortunately a bit spoiled by the ongoing roadworks lasting another 12 months.

We stayed here for my mother in laws 60th birthday and I couldn’t recommend it more. We were in an accessible room which was VERY spacious, had a beautiful big wet room and was ideal for anyone with mobility issues as it was situated on the ground floor.
We went into Durham for a meal and drinks on the evening and this hotel was in an ideal location and you are right in the centre and it only takes a 2 minute walk over the bridge to get to the first bar/shop/restaurant.
The beds were the comfiest thing I have ever slept on and I left the hotel seeking a mattress topper and pillows that this hotel provides. The use of the pool and sauna was also included in the price with towels provided.
Also a great quality breakfast with a wide range of options including fruit, cereals, cooked breakfast and pastries.

Couldn’t recommend this hotel enough and will definitely stay here again if I’m ever in Durham!

Make no mistake, this is a lovely hotel - superb location, excellent facilities, lovely pool and great staff. Staying in a premium room (358) for two nights, I was impressed with both the layout of the room and the huge (very comfy) bed. The walk in shower and spacious bathroom were much appreciated, as were the very special efforts made to effect social distancing throughout the hotel. The changing rooms in the pool area are a little tired, but the pool itself was warm, clean and appeared well maintained.
However.... having paid in excess of £150 per night (breakfast extra) to be charged £11 per day for parking seemed miserly in the extreme, just ‘bad form’ and not something I would have expected from a premium provider. Although it sounds silly, I would have happily paid £11 per night extra for the room, but I suppose it is asking too much to be treated like a ‘guest’ rather than ‘client’ nowadays.

The staff, as always, are lively, helpful and friendly. The rooms are clean when you arrive, the beds are comfortable and the only issue with the rooms is the complete lack of hooks. So, nowhere to hang your towels or wet dressing gowns etc. This normally wouldn’t matter too much, because your towels would be changed regularly and wet towels would be removed.

The website claims that they have introduced extra cleaning of rooms as a response to COVID. Well, they may have done, but nowhere on the website does it mention that the staff don’t even enter the room until the fourth day of your stay! So, you arrive on on a Monday, and they won’t even service your room until Thursday. Presumably this is to save money. Until then, you have to clean the room yourself, make up your own bed, and ask at reception if you want more toilet paper or shampoo. The room obviously contains no cleaning materials or equipment, meaning that within two days, it is dirtier and messier than your own home.

One reason to stay in a more expensive hotel such as the Marriott is the quality of the service. Other hotels I have stayed in still service the rooms on request, asking you when you book in if you want it serviced or not, which seems a sensible compromise to me. I suggest that if you want to stay in theMarriott either only stay one or two days, or book two different levels of room, so that you can move to one that has been cleaned, with dry towels and a hoovered floor. All in all, a pretty ghastly experience we won’t return In a hurry, despite the fact that this was our third stay this year. Ah well.

The Durham Marriott is situated close a short walk from Durham City centre. Our room (217) was clean and modern and the staff very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent with lots of choice and freshly cooked.

This was our tenth visit to the Durham Marriott over many years and the hotel is still excellent value and is in a prime location for visiting the many local restaurants and bars. The one minor downside is the car parking charge is £19 per day, parking was always free to hotel guests, it would have been cheaper for us to travel by train and taxi than by car and park. The car park during our stay was a best half full. This did not detract from our stay and we will return.

Yes my room was spacious but for the price, that's where it ends. There were a number of irritating things that in a budget hotel would be fine but this is not budget. No socket by the bed for charging phone, toiletries included a bath soak (in a room with shower only). No robe hook in the shower room or towel rail near the handbasin. No glass or cup in the bathroom and they are still only providing paper cups for hot beverages. A very frugal issue of 2 tea bags. Yes more were readily available at reception but quite a walk back for more. At breakfast, whilst the buffet was good, the service was very poor. According to the restaurant manager they were very short staffed. I know that there's an industry wide shortage of staff but at Marriott prices that really should not be an issue that impacts guests nor be used as an excuse for poor service. Reception staff were all lovely and very helpful.

The hotel ranges across three different ages of building, but all modern inside. Good rooms, kept clean and tidy by housekeeping staff. comfortable bed and adequate bathroom. Good breakfasts and efficient service. All staff we met were very pleasant and helpful. Here's the tip.... We thought that by booking through internet price compare websites we thought that we may have got a better deal, NOT SO. We phoned Marriott's booking and they offered a lower price, without negotiation. But when we looked into Marriott's website and explored the offers such as deals for the over 60's and joining the "club" the price reduced significantly. We stayed for £70 less than the best price offered by the price comparison sites.

We recently stayed at the Hotel fro two nights whilst returning from out holiday in Southern England.

One reason for booking the hotel was the advertised pool. Which at time of booking and time of checking in was clearly still mentioned on the hotel website.

On arrival we asked if we could book a pool slot which has been standard Marriott practice at other hotels over the last year only to be advised that the pool was closed and had been for several months with there being no intention of it reopening.

On asking why it was closed and why we were not advised of this significant change to the facilities, given we had booked this on the understanding that this would have been enjoyed by the kids we were met with what could be described as an elusive repose, with the staff member stating the website site advised it was closed and we must have been looking at Booking.com or Tripadviser which were inaccurate.

This was not the case as we always book direct as loyal Marriott users. Had we known about this at least we would have had the option to change to another hotel which matched out needs.

The Staff member at check also did not advised that unlike other hotels in the group they are still only providing room service every three days unless you ask. This was only explained on the second day after he room still hadn't been serviced at 1600hrs.

Apart from this the room we were given, was clean, the decor was fresh and had clearly been done up recently.

The main public areas were also very well presented and showed signs of recently having been refurbished. The staff in general were all nice and helpful.

Bar area is large with a nice outdoor area to sit. However please be aware that there are extensive Bridge works taking place next to the Hotel, which do generate additional noise during the day. It also causes access issues to and from the hotel so please bear this in mind when playing your trip as you may have to take an alternative route to cross the river.

The Hotel is well located for the City Centre and the various places of interest. All in a nice hotel but they should be informing guests prior to arrival that they no longer have the advertised facilities as I feel were paid a premium for a pool that wasn't there.

The Royal County is a wonderful hotel in an excellent location for visiting Durham. Our room was large with a very comfortable bed. The breakfast was worth the money, especially if purchased the night before. And the staff couldn’t be more obliging being very responsive to requests. BUT the Marriott needs to stop cost cutting whilst hiding behind so called Covid measures!! This is a luxury hotel with the prices reflecting that and the Marriott should not be skimping on toiletries in the bathroom, the paper cups, the drinks tray - all of which you’d expect to be replenished at least daily. Management have decided you will only be given replacements every 3 days!! So you have to go and beg from the poor staff who no doubt take the brunt of this appalling decision. Wake up Marriott and come back into the real world.

We stayed here for 2 nights with our Daughters in one of their quadruple rooms. The room was spotlessly clean and had a river view, which was nice surprise! Our Daughters used the gym a couple of times, but the pool was closed, which we were aware of and so wasn’t a problem. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and polite on arrival and informed us that the car park was subsidised for hotel residents at £11 a day, which was great. It’s in a very central location, right next to the river and in the town centre with a great choice of cafes, restaurants and bars. We had a great time and will definitely be visiting again.

What are the parking arrangements and are there sufficient spaces to guarantee a space?
Answer from Front Desk T

The hotel has on-site car parking facilities available to both guests and non-residents. For our hotel guests, parking is charged at £11.00 per night, and can be paid at the front desk during check-in. For non-residents, there are pay and display machines available in the car park. On rare occasions the car park can be at full capacity, however we do have overflow parking available for our guests.
